Soldier Uses Gun to Scare Another Soldier With Hiccups, Accidentally Shoots Him in the Face

There's nothing worse than the hiccups, except maybe getting shot in the face.

Soldier Isaac Young was suffering from a bad case of the hiccups when fellow soldier Patrick Myers tried to scare them out of him with a handgun. But rather than just spook Young, Myers' gun discharged, hitting the other man in the face and killing him.

Myers is a soldier at Fort Hood, as was Young at the time of his death.

Killeen, Texas Police Department spokesperson Carroll Smith explained the fairly straightforward case.

Fox News Distorts Climate Science; In Other News, the Pope Is Catholic

For anyone with an interest in journalism, it’s no surprise that Fox News Channel and the opinion pages of The Wall Street Journal lean well to the right. Editorially, these two jewels of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. have a long history of denying human-induced global warming, in keeping with certain ideological interests.

New data support the anecdotes and conventional wisdom. At a midday panel on September 21 in New York City’s Science, Industry and Business Library, the Union of Concerned Scientists released results of an analysis quantifying the media outlets’ distortions of climate science.

In the six months from February to July 2012, the UCS searched for the terms “climate change” and “global warming” during primetime Fox News Channel programs, which consist of political commentary shows such as The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity.

The UCS found that, in 37 of 40 instances, Fox News programs misled viewers about climate science—mainly, by broadly dismissing it. As an example, the UCS quotes an on-air statement from April 11, 2012: “I thought we were getting warmer. But in the ‘70s, it was, look out, we’re all going to freeze.” (The report didn’t reveal the name of the actual source.) Fox News hosts and guests also mocked and disparaged statements from scientists and drowned out genuine scientific assertions with cherry-picked data and false claims.

Romney Apologizes To Nation's 150 Million 'Starving, Filthy Beggars'

SALT LAKE CITY—Seeking to limit the fallout from a videotaped speech in which he asserts 47 percent of Americans “pay no taxes” and do not take “personal responsibility and care for their lives,” Mitt Romney hastily called a press conference today to apologize personally to the “150 million starving, filthy beggars [he] might have offended.”

Saying that he deeply regretted his choice of words at a private $50,000-a-plate fundraising function in May—during which he argued “[his] job is not to worry” about the lower-earning half of the nation’s populace—Romney personally appealed to the country’s “dirt-caked garbage pickers and toothless street urchins” for forgiveness.

“First and foremost, I would like to offer a heartfelt apology to all the whores, junkies, bums, and grime-covered derelicts out there who make up nearly half our nation,” a visibly contrite and solemn Romney said outside a campaign stop at a local high school. “Let me assure you that I in no way meant to offend any of the putrid-smelling, barefoot masses out there. My campaign is not about dividing this nation, but about bringing all sides together—the rich, elegant members of the upper class, as well as the 47 percent who are covered in flies and eat directly from back-alley dumpsters.”

“I am fully committed to building a better future for every American,” Romney continued, “and that means ensuring all 150 million grease-and-urine-soaked members of our society get a fair shake.”

A rambling idiot with a sleep disorder ...

Rick Perry Was a Terrible Candidate Because He Had a Sleep Disorder, Says New Book

Remember Rick Perry's presidential campaign? Me neither. But at one time the Texas Governor was the GOP frontrunner. Then, through a combination of gaffe-laden debates and behind-the-scenes disorganization, his campaign imploded. James Carville went so far as to call it "the worst presidential campaign/candidate in American history." In an except from his new book, Texas Tribune reporter Jay Root, who spent months following the Perry campaign, gives an explanation for Perry's cringe-worthy debate performances and general campaign mismanagement: he was just very sleepy.

According to Root, Perry had a previously undiagnosed sleep disorder, which caused him to make mind-blowing statements in debates like this:
