Real Peggy Sue, of 1958 Buddy Holly song fame, dies in Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — The Texas woman who inspired the 1958 Buddy Holly song "Peggy Sue" has died at a Lubbock hospital.

Peggy Sue Gerron Rackham of Lubbock died Monday at University Medical Center, according to UMC spokesman Eric Finley. She was 78. The family gave the hospital permission to confirm the death, but asked that no additional information be released, Finley said Tuesday.

Peggy Sue Gerron in 2008 released her autobiography "Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?: A Memoir by Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue" to mark the 50th anniversary of the song.

Gerron, while promoting her autobiography, said material for the memoir came from about 150 diary entries she made during the time she knew Holly. Gerron was born in Olton, Texas, but moved to Lubbock where she attended high school and met Holly and his friends.

Konni Burton Goes Off the Rails to hide support for new taxes

Tea Party/Trump Party Republican Konni Burton took her Texas Senate District 10 race against mainstream Democrat Beverly Powell off the rails on Friday. Burton launched a wild and misleading charge against Powell claiming Powell failed to pay some taxes. Records, however, show that while Powell – like many small businesses – disputed some business tax assessments, she ultimately resolved the disagreements.

Beverly Powell is a successful Tarrant County businesswoman and a highly respected former Burleson School Board Member.

Meanwhile, Konni Burton ran for office as a fervent Tea Party activist and is now being forced to defend a four-year record of blind allegiance to the Austin-based extreme special interest PAC, Empower Texans, and west Texas ideologue billionaires like Tim Dunn.

Most damaging to Burton is her support for a massive state consumption taxand her state budget votes that are forcing local property taxes to skyrocket. When confronted about her tax votes, Burton adopts the Trump approach and flatly lies, hoping to overwhelm facts with fast talk and bluster.

Memorial Hermann to merge with Baylor Scott & White creating largest health system in Texas

Two of the biggest hospital chains in Texas announced plans Monday for a merger that would create a mega-system, stretching from Dallas to Austin to Houston, treating patients in more than 30 counties and employing more than 73,000 people across the state.

Memorial Hermann Health System, Houston's biggest nonprofit hospital chain, and Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest in Dallas, have signed a letter of intent to begin negotiations, with the goal of having a definitive agreement in place by next spring.

The proposed merger is the latest in a growing national trend, experts say.

Hospital systems have been consolidating rapidly in recent years, in part because of reforms in the health care market aimed at steering more patients to outpatient treatment and avoiding the need for costly in-hospital care.

Sen. Ted Cruz, challenger Beto O'Rourke to hold 2nd debate

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Republican incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke will take part in another hour-long debate as their U.S. Senate race nears Election Day.

The debate will be the second between the pair and will be televised at 8 p.m. Oct. 16 from KENS-TV to San Antonio viewers. It will also air live in 10 of the state's largest markets.

The topics are expected to focus on domestic and foreign policy issues.

Cruz and O'Rourke discussed domestic policy issues during a Sept. 21 debate at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. However, a scheduled debate last Saturday in Houston was canceled as Senate Republicans considered voting on Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court. That vote was delayed.

ActBlue donors alone sent $25 million to Beto O'Rourke in costliest Senate race of 2018

WASHINGTON - Rep. Beto O'Rourke's torrid fund-raising is already the stuff of legend for Texas Democrats eager to oust Sen. Ted Cruz and break the GOP's long grip on the state.

When the next round of campaign finance reports hits later month, he's sure to raise even more eyebrows.

O'Rourke pulled in more than $11 million in July and August alone, just through ActBlue, the Democratic fund-raising platform. Last week, the three-term El Paso congressman also set -- and exceeded -- an aggressive one-week $5 million online goal.

That's $16 million that hasn't yet shown up on his campaign finance reports. It doesn't count whatever he pulled in through ActBlue in September, nor all the other donations that came his way since July 1.

Dallas police, DA refuse to release officer's 911 call, other info related to Botham Jean killing

The city of Dallas refuses to release a recording of the 911 call that Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger made after she fatally shot Botham Jean in his apartment last month.

An attorney for the city said in a letter dated Monday that the Police Department and Dallas County district attorney's office are asking Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to allow them to withhold the 911 recording, which has been requested by The Dallas Morning News.

Assistant City Attorney Pavala Armstrong wrote that releasing the information would interfere with the investigation into the Sept. 6 shooting.

The News is asking for the recording to give the public a better understanding of what happened that night at the South Side Flats apartments, blocks away from police headquarters.

A Day Of Thanks: Victoria Community Celebrates Completion Of New Mosque

Dr. Shahid Hashmi, a Pakistani immigrant, is president of the Victoria Islamic Center. He’s one of the founders of the center and spearheaded efforts to build the original mosque back in 2000. Many of Hashmi’s longtime friends were there on Saturday to congratulate him on the completion of the new building, including a local real estate agent, Shirley Buckert.

“She helped me buy this lot. Buy the land. She’s the one,” Hashmi says.

“Yes, my friend, my friend. It was just grass,” Buckert tells him.

“In 1995 we bought it, just grass. So, in 1995 we bought it and by 2000 we built the old one. It burned down in 2017 and now new one is here in 2018,” Hashmi says.

Court Rejects Former Gay-Porn Star's Appeal of Murder Conviction

The 5th U.S. Court of Appeals has blocked gay former porn star Brandon Dale Woodruff’s latest appeal of his conviction for the double-murder of his parents in Royse City in East Texas in 2005.

Woodruff, who has spent 13 years behind bars and is the subject of the book Railroaded and the documentary Texas Justice: Brandon Woodruff, has always maintained his innocence. He and his supporters claim homophobia blinded investigators, prosecutors, the judge and the jury, preventing a fair trial.

Prosecutors theorized that Woodruff, who had not publicly come out yet when arrested, was capable of lying about murdering his parents because he hid his sexual orientation from most people and led a secret life that included gay disco dancing and appearing in a couple of gay porn films produced by a Florida filmmaker. They also made much of his failing grades at Abilene Christian University where he was a 19-year-old freshman and of his high credit card debt as motivation for the murders.

The federal appeals court ruled Sept. 20 that Woodruff, who is serving a life sentence with no parole in the Hughes Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections, would not be eligible to appeal a devastating ruling before his trial. He previously was also denied a writ by the U.S. Northern District Court of Texas.
