Wednesday's Johnny Manziel news (two stories)

Criminal charges in Manziel case delayed after detective put on patrol shift

The Dallas detective investigating whether Johnny Manziel hit, kidnapped and threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend is currently working a two-week rotation in patrol, delaying filing possible criminal charges in the case.

Police officials said last week that investigators expected to determine whether they will charge Manziel with a crime by Friday. But the investigation has been delayed because the lead detective on the case is patrolling the streets as part of a community policing program recently revived by Dallas police Chief David Brown.

Brown revived the two-week patrol program in an effort to reduce slow response times. But in a message sent out to the department this week, he said officers can volunteer to do their two-week assignment in communications — technically another desk job.

Brown wrote that the officers will follow up by phone with low priority callers while patrol officers deal with the emergencies and urgent 911 calls.

Johnny Manziel went on booze-filled romp after alleged assault

The week after Johnny Manziel allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend apparently was one of salacious partying for the embattled Cleveland Browns quarterback, according to a new report.

The Daily Mail reported Wednesday that a week after ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley accused him of kidnapping her and striking her so hard she lost hearing in her left ear, Manziel and four friends went to the Mexican party hub Cabo San Lucas during the first week of February for a booze- and sex-filled romp that covered six days at two different resort properties.

Citing sources close to the former Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M, the Daily Mail reported that Manziel and his all-male entourage threw "wild parties at the luxury villa, inviting as many as 15 girls (at) a time to join them."

The paper cited witnesses who said "the five-bedroom property was littered with bikini-clad girls hanging by the pool throughout the week.

'The guys had so many condoms that they were blowing them up into balloons and throwing them around the villa for fun," the Daily Mail's source said.

'They would pick girls up from the beach and invite them back to the villa. They had one party and there was 15 girls there."

Memorial service set for beloved neighborhood cat named Cash

AUSTIN -- Rest in peace, Kitty in Black.

Friends of a gregarious cat named Cash will honor the recently departed feline with a memorial service Friday at a neighborhood store and coffee shop he frequented.

Cash was born at a small East Austin “commune” populated by tepees and an old school bus, but bonded with then-neighbors Keith Sharp and Eve Richter, who fed and kept an eye on him. Their roommate changed the cat’s name from Death Metal to Cash after watching him strut up the sidewalk as the sun set.

Cash was neutered and chipped, but roamed the Cherrywood area near Manor Road as a neighborhood pet, sneaking into doors left ajar. He loved to follow people on walks, break into homes, sleep in dog beds and drink from faucets and water glasses.

“A window would be cracked, and there he’d be on the dog’s bed. He’d just show up like a smoke monster, ninja-like,” Sharp said. “He was a rogue, a true gypsy. He ingratiated himself with all these neighbors.”

Christian-based alternative to Obamacare making gains in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — When Mike Burns' son jumped out of a tree, snagged his foot and broke both his arms, the Highland-area father braced for the bills.

The family had a UnitedHealthcare plan with a $20,000 deductible — so Burns ended up shelling out the $5,500 for the surgery out of pocket.

That's when he began casting around for alternatives.

"I was like, 'Man, if all our neighbors just got together and did our own thing, we'd be better off,'" Burns said.

With premiums ballooning and benefits shrinking, more families are turning to a previously little-known alternative to traditional insurance: Christian-based health care ministries.
