Oil from Galveston spill arrives near Corpus Christi

Tar balls washed up in Mustang Island State Park Sunday as oil from last week's spill in Galveston Bay continues to slide down the coast.

Lt. Tyrone Conner of the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed clean-up crews were dispatched to the popular camping and swimming spot on the barrier island near Corpus Christi, about 200 miles from the site of the March 22 spill.

"The tar balls are about the size of a quarter up to 3 inches," Conner said.

Nearly 170,000 gallons of bunker fuel spilled in Galveston Bay when a barge collided with a tug boat last Saturday. Currents and winds pulled some of the spill out into the Gulf. Federal and state officials said they are tracking the slick's movement.

There is a letter to the editor in the Brownsville Herald asking, "Why do people vote for liberals?" Here is a copy of the letter:

Editor:

I asked several adults (older than 18) why they voted for the liberals. After a few seconds of wheels turning and squeaking loudly, I intervened and asked if it was because they wanted lower taxes. They unanimously said yes. Anymore reasons? Their silence was disquieting to me. So I asked if it was that they wanted to see a strong defense, border security, and wanted to reduce the size of this large government. Again, a resounding yes. I wont say what they thought of Obamacare.

I had to ask, and I did. But I did not get a substantive answer. I asked, what were the issues that define a conservative and a liberal? Not one of them could tell me, so I asked again if they probably knew why they voted for liberals. They were unsure.

This speaks volumes. Yes, I explained that they were saying yes to conservative principles. Voting for someone because he or she is cool is not cool. It is ignorance, but most of all sad.

Remember the saying, if you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything. Or something like that. Mocking real life is funny when you’re ignorant.

Truth be known, right-wingers do get heart attacks, high blood pressure, cancer, etc., just like everyone else. But it’s the well-informed who make wise decisions.

At this point in his term, as Mrs. Clinton put it, what difference does it make? Obama is a lame duck and his legacy is not a good one. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself so I’ll wait for the mid-term elections.

But then I am reminded that Mr. Obama was elected twice. I said yup, let’s keep voting that way, I said to them. We’ll have (after tons of promises) transparent government, accountability for Brian Terry and Benghazi, The IRS scandal resolved, Obamacare (keep your doctor and plan) fixed and working perfectly, equal distribution of income (Gee, I’m on my way to make what Peyton Manning earns), more welfare, food stamps, larger out-of-control government, $17 trillion debt (here, my son, this is all for you).

Let’s not forget immigration reform and something resembling a sound foreign policy. I could go on, but instead I’ll say, have a nice day. I will because I vote well-informed as an independent.

Schnurman: Greed doomed the TXU buyout

Private equity firms hired some big guns to sell their buyout of TXU Corp. None was more respected than James Baker, former secretary of state, treasury secretary and chief of staff to two U.S. presidents.

Baker had been an envoy to Africa and the Middle East not long before he was campaigning for the buyout. At an editorial board meeting, the then-76-year-old statesman was asked a question: Why, at that stage of his career, was he hawking a private equity deal?

Baker lifted his right hand and rubbed his thumb against his fingertips, making the universal symbol for money.

It was a candid, revealing moment from a buyout team that had largely stuck to talking points and calculated concessions.

Texas House Republicans scrambling for Ralph Hall re-election

Texas House Republicans are scrambling to help U.S. Rep. Ralph Hall, who finds himself in political trouble in what he's vowed — again — will be his final campaign.

The Hill reports that the 17-term incumbent ignored danger signs in his bid for re-election, namely that a self-funding rival was outspending him in a primary. That candidate, attorney John Ratcliffe, has forced Hall into a May 27 runoff.

“We have sort of code of conduct and honor in our delegation that we stick together, and Ralph’s one of our dearest members, and it’d be tragic to see him lose what could be his last election,” Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, told The Hill.

Republican Rep. Lamar Smith is leading the charge within the Texas delegation to save Hall. Capitol Hill sources also confirmed to The Hill that after the primary, Hall’s team reached out to House leadership to solicit fundraising and campaign advice.

-snip-

At 90, Hall, of Rockwall, is Congress' oldest member.

Still a world to win

THE BRITISH Marxist Terry Eagleton has observed, "You can tell that capitalism is in trouble when people start talking about capitalism. It indicates that the system has ceased to be as natural as the air we breathe, and can be seen instead as the historically rather recent phenomenon that it is. Moreover, whatever was born can always die."

Certainly, in the last several years, "capitalism" has become a frequent subject of mainstream discussion. Radicals like myself are fond of citing opinion polls showing that young people today have a more favorable view of socialism than capitalism. But as remarkable as the results is the fact that the question is even asked. For decades, we were told that there was no alternative to the free-market system. But the financial crisis of 2008 shook capitalism so violently that questioning its legitimacy became acceptable.

There is no shortage of reasons to question that legitimacy. We can charge capitalism with being a profoundly unequal system; the world's 85 richest individuals control more than half of the world's wealth. We can charge it with being a racist system; the American gulag now houses more than 2.2 million men and women--disproportionately Blacks and Latinos.

We can charge it with failing to meet the basic needs for subsistence of the majority of its population; more than 80 percent of the world's population lives on less than $10 a day, and 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. And--if not most damningly, at least most dangerously--we can charge it with threatening the very ecosystem on which all life of the planet depends.

Why I’m jealous of my dog’s insurance

Nelson’s doctors found the bulge in his abdomen on a Monday. An ultrasound and a CT scan showed that a mass was crowding out his stomach and kidneys. It was one of the largest the doctors had ever seen. If they didn’t do something, he’d be dead in a couple of days.

The hospital gave him a blood transfusion because he was anemic. A radiologist noticed that something might be wrong with his adrenal gland. His surgical team removed what turned out to be a 12.5-pound tumor, lifting it out like an overgrown newborn. Nelson’s intensive-care nurse called his family that night, and his internists gave them regular updates until he was discharged.

Nelson’s health insurance covered 90 percent of the costs after a reasonable $500 deductible. I’m happy that he has such good health coverage. He’s my dog.

And I’m jealous of him. Nelson has the kind of health care that I’d hoped the Affordable Care Act would usher in for those who, like my wife and me, have to buy health insurance on the open market. I’d long been frustrated at how health care shackles people to corporate jobs. I believed this legislation, signed four years ago this month, would free people to pursue their dreams, start new companies and not worry about the health insurance penalty.

Manziel's possible replacement at Texas A&M arrested for public intoxication

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill, 19, has emulated former A&M great Johnny Manziel in a way Aggies hoped he wouldn’t – with an appearance on the police blotter.

College Station police arrested Hill, who’s battling for the Aggies’ starting gig, at 2:57 a.m. Friday in the Northgate bar district on a charge of public intoxication, according to the police department’s website.

The Bryan-College Station Eagle, which obtained police documentation, reported, “Hill was passed out in a planter full of rocks and plants in front of the restaurant-bar (called Chimy’s) when officers arrived, police said in the arrest report. When asked who the current president of the United States was, Hill reportedly answered ‘Bush,’ and told officers his name was ‘Kennedy.’”

Hill, senior Matt Joeckel and freshman Kyle Allen are all vying to replace Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner. A&M spokesman Alan Cannon said Hill has been suspended indefinitely from the program per athletic department policy. Nearly two years ago, College Station police arrested Manziel for fighting, failing to identify himself and possessing fake licenses, all prior to his earning the starting job over Jameill Showers in August 2012. For the record, Manziel was arrested at 3:24 a.m.
