Rishi Sunak announces 5B euro windfall tax on energy firms to ease cost of living crisis- Guardian

Guardian News

Rishi Sunak has succumbed to pressure to do more to tackle the cost of living crisis and announced a £5bn windfall tax on energy companies, calling it a 'temporary, targeted energy levy'.

His statement was met with uproar from Labour MPs, who have repeatedly called for a windfall tax on energy firms. Russian forces tighten grip on eastern Donbas region - DW News

Russia is intensifying its campaign in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, launching attacks on dozens of towns in Luhansk and Donetsk. The key industrial city of Severodonetsk is in growing danger of becoming completely surrounded. Having failed to capture the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its second largest city Kharkiv, Moscow has focused on smaller objectives.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is demanding more heavy weaponry from the west – describing the situation in Donbas as 'extremely difficult.'

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Russia's President Vladimir Putin cannot be allowed to win the war in Ukraine.

In an address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Scholz repeated his country's support for Ukraine, but did not address Kyiv's demands for more heavy weapons. He said Russia's war is contributing to a global food crisis.
