The New NRA President is a Deep-State Thug

When the National Rifle Association (NRA) selected Oliver North as its president last month, you probably reacted with what has become the baseline emotion of the Trump era: entirely unsurprised shock.

It may seem strange for an organization that claims to stand for the right to arm “good guys” against criminals to choose someone best known for illegally running guns and drugs on three continents. But in reality, North and the NRA are made for each other.

For one thing, he’s perfect for an organization that needs to step up its trolling game. The NRA relies on generating outrage in order to make its members feel under siege so they...buy more guns.

No disrespect to the organization’s current leaders working tirelessly to further the trauma of school-shooting victims by calling them crisis actors and demanding that their teachers be armed, but they needed someone with cable news star power to compete for airtime with the Troll-in-Chief.

Illinois lawmaker quits leadership job amid harassment claim

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The No. 3 Democrat in the Illinois House stepped down from his leadership post Thursday less than an hour after a legislative activist accused him of verbal abuse and sexual harassment.

Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang of Skokie submitted his resignation to House Speaker Michael Madigan, but later denied the allegations against him as “absurd.”

Medical-marijuana activist Maryann Loncar, 51, accused the 30-year veteran of unwanted sexual advances and intimidation while interacting with him over the past four years on legislation to allow the use of marijuana to alleviate pain and other problems with specific medical conditions. Loncar said she rebuffed multiple sexual advances.

“I was harassed, I was intimidated,” she said through tears. “I was humiliated and blackballed.”

St. Paul archdiocese to pay $210M to clergy abuse victims

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis announced a $210 million settlement Thursday with 450 victims of clergy sexual abuse as part of its plan for bankruptcy reorganization, making this the second-largest payout in the scandal that rocked the nation's Roman Catholic Church.

Victims' attorney Jeff Anderson said the money, a total of $210,290,724, will go into a pot to pay survivors, with the amount for each survivor to be determined.

Anderson said a formal reorganization plan will now be submitted to a bankruptcy judge for approval, and then it will be sent to the victims for a vote. Anderson expected they will readily approve it.

"We changed the playing field," said Jim Keenan, who was sexually abused as a child in the 1980s by a Twin Cities-area priest. "They have to listen to victims now, and that is huge."
