Veterinary Board Seeks To Revoke License For Texas Vet Who Killed Cat With Arrow

Source: Huffington Post Australia

Dr. Kristen Lindsey is appealing the decision.

The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners has made a decision about what to do with Kristen Lindsey, the veterinarian who bragged on Facebook about killing a cat with a bow and arrow: It wants to revoke Lindsey's license.

That decision has been a long time coming, and is of great relief to animal advocates, who have been clamoring for justice for the cat -- believed to be a pet named Tiger, who enjoyed riding around on his caretaker's tractor.

But it's not quite the end of the road. Lindsey is appealing.

"The board's decision was just and necessary to protect the welfare of animals," three members of a group called Tiger's Justice Team -- Jean Salyer, Betsy Anderson and Gisele Milsaps-Flanigan -- told The Huffington Post by email. "This is a great victory, but not the final victory. The process will take time."

Lindsey put up the gruesome Facebook post in April. (You can see it here.) She was fired from the Washington Animal Clinic in Brenham, Texas, soon thereafter. But a grand jury found "insufficient proof" to charge her with a crime.

Expecting Stray Cat Walks Up to Campers Asking for Help for Her Unborn Babies

Source: Lovemeow

Bindi the cat had been seen at a campground in Indiana this summer but she’d never let anyone get close to her until three days ago, she ran up to two campers and started meowing for help. “She needed help because she was so pregnant it looked like she could have kittens any minute.”

Jennifer of Here Kitty Kitty Rescue told Love Meow: “Many of the campers had seen her around but would never get close enough to touch Bindi. People would throw food to her and she would take it and run.

The day before delivery she approached two of our volunteers here at the rescue who like to camp there and walked right up to them meowing for food. She must have sensed the fondness they have for felines. They were able to sit right next to her as she gladly accepted the kitty food she was given.

They were able to pet her and bring her to the rescue. It’s almost hard to believe that no one could touch her because her personality is very loving and grateful.” (Follow them on Facebook)

Not even 12 hours after Bindi arrived in the rescue, she went into labor.

Retirement party held in Halifax for ship’s mouser cat

Source: Toronto Star

Erik the Red, an orange tabby, has been chasing mice aboard the CSS Acadia since 1999.

HALIFAX—An elderly orange tabby cat slept calmly on a table in the chart room of the CSS Acadia on Sunday as dozens of people dropped by to stroke his head and give him kisses in honour of his retirement.

Erik the Red, named after the famed Viking, has been the rodent control officer aboard the ship on the Halifax waterfront for more than 15 years.

He took up the role in 1999, when the malnourished stray kitten followed Acadia shipkeeper Stephen Read back to the vessel.

“I was walking through the streets of Halifax one night with a friend, and this cat started following us, street after street after street, and he wouldn’t go away,” said Read on the deck of the Acadia.

(Warning: Graphic Picture): Survivor Cat Emerges As Symbol Of Hope Amid California Wildfire

Source: The Dodo

Hundreds of residents, both humans and animals alike, have been affected by a massive wildfire which continues to rage across California. But amid so much devastation, an unlikely survivor has emerged as a symbol of hope in a place where it's been so hard to come by.

This week, firefighters battling the Valley Fire, north of San Francisco, made a startling discovery. There, in one of the hardest hit areas, they found a black cat who somehow managed to survive on his own through the fast-moving blaze. He was rushed to the Wasson Memorial Veterinary Clinic in the city of Lakeport.

"He was brought in by the firefighter who found him," a staffer at the clinic told The Dodo. "He has suffered burns, primarily around his face, but all his hair has been singed."

Veterinarians quickly set about treating the cat for his painful injuries, inserting a feeding tube to nourish him and applying burn cream to his face and body.

Incredibly, despite all he's been through, the cat is said to be recovering well — both in body and spirit — thanks to the dedication of the medical workers who refused to see him as a lost cause.

Woman Says Cat 'Saved Her Life' After Detecting Cancerous Lump In Her Neck

Source: Huffington Post

A woman has praised her cat for saving her life after it discovered she had cancer.

Sue McKenzie, 64, and her 24-year-old cat Tom have lived together for the past 20 years and Sue has gotten used to her pet’s aloof manner.

So, when Tom started tapping her on the back of the neck with his paw, Sue thought something must be wrong – but with him rather than her.

After a vet told Sue there was nothing wrong with Tom and suggested he was trying to tell her something, she decided to investigate – and found a lump in her neck which was later diagnosed as cancerous.

Biker Saves Injured Kitten and Continues His Trip While Caring for Him

Source: Lovemeow

A motorcyclist found a tiny injured kitten that needed a lot of help at a truck stop, he decided to help the little guy, tuck him in his vest and continue on his cross country trip while taking care of the kitten.

Pat has been riding cross-country (from Nevada to New Jersey) with a little kitty snuggled up to him since he rescued him. His furry sidekick has quite an unbelievable story.

While he was in Nevada at a truck stop getting gas, he found the kitten who was crying for help. “He was pretty badly burned, so I picked him up and tucked him inside my vest. We’re feeding him regularly now, so he’s doing better, even though he’s sort of living on the road until we get home,” he told Revzilla.

“His burns are pretty much all healed up except for the little spot on his lip… We’ve been keeping it clean and using neosporin. It looks a lot better and doesn’t seem to be bothering him.

VIDEO: Humane Society Looking For Cold Hearted Cat Burglar

Source: CBS Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) – The Michigan Humane Society is offering a reward for the safe return of a kitten that was stolen from the Detroit Center on Thursday.

A video captures the theft, in which a woman and a young girl are seen in the visiting area for adoptable animals, and the woman reaches in a cage and stuffs the 10-week-old kitten into her purse, and the girl watches to make sure a volunteer does not return to the area.

The kitten, named Misty Gish, is a domestic short hair with white and gray markings. She has recently been spayed, has a shaved belly and a tattoo (a circle with a line through it indicated that she was spayed). She has a microchip and has been reported missing to the microchip company.

Video surveillance cameras show a woman wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, sunglasses, and carrying a large purse while entering the shelter with a young girl who was wearing a pink T-shirt and pink sneakers.

Grumpy Cat 'throws' out first pitch at Diamondbacks game

Source: USA Today Sports

The cool thing about the Internet is that when you think you’ve reached “Peak Internet,” it’s topped by something even more peak, often just hours or even minutes later. But I’m still going to say it: we’ve reached peak Internet.

Yes, that is Grumpy cat, your Monday morning spirit animal, throwing out the first pitch at Monday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants. Only it can’t really throw out a first pitch because it’s a cat.

And it seems less “grumpy” than it does “crushed beneath the unbearable weight of consciousness.” There are a couple of photos from this affair, and they’re best enjoyed when paired with assorted Jack Kerouac quotes.

You’re welcome.

Cats don't suffer separation anxiety when left alone, study shows

Source: Stuff.co.nz

Rudyard Kipling was right. Cats really do walk by themselves, and do not need their owners to feel secure and safe, a study has shown.

Although absent owners might worry that their pet is pining, in fact, cats show no sign of separation anxiety.

Researchers at the University of Lincoln have concluded that cats, unlike dogs, do not need humans to feel protected.

Before cat lovers start despairing about their aloof pets, however, animal behaviourists said they should take the finding as a compliment. If cats stay, it means they really want to be there.

Hiroshima Map Offers Cat’s-Eye View

Source: The Wall Street Journal

Hiroshima prefecture has designed a purr-fect map for tourists wishing to see some of its attractions from a different angle.

The prefecture on Tuesday launched a website with what it calls the world’s first “cat’s-eye view” street map, through which users can explore some locations in Onomichi city from a more grounded perspective.

“We were seeking to introduce a different way to look at our cities and offer a view of the streets that wasn’t available before,” a Hiroshima tourism official said. They decided on a cat’s-eye view because Onomichi, a port town known for its large number of cats, is also home to a museum dedicated to Japan’s ‘maneki-neko’ cat dolls, the official said.

The prefecture teamed up with technicians who worked on Google’s street view maps, and used the same equipment to capture the images.
