Threatening Letters Claiming to Have "Pathogens" Sent to Senators, Media

The FBI and NYPD are investigating threatening letters that claim to contain dangerous pathogens sent to media companies and U.S. senators, law enforcement officials tell NBC New York.

According to law enforcement officials, the person sent letters to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, of "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report," claiming more letters had been sent to 100 senators and various media companies, including The New York Times, Fox News and NPR.

The writer, who voices anger over corporate greed and the state of the U.S. economy, said some of the letters contained harmful substances at random.

The letters are believed to have been mailed from Oregon and are signed "MAB."

Radiation detected 400 miles off Japanese coast

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Radioactive contamination from the Fukushima power plant disaster has been detected as far as almost 400 miles off Japan in the Pacific Ocean, with water showing readings of up to 1,000 times more than prior levels, scientists reported Tuesday.

But those results for the substance cesium-137 are far below the levels that are generally considered harmful, either to marine animals or people who eat seafood, said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

He spoke Tuesday in Salt Lake City at the annual Ocean Sciences Meeting, attended by more than 4,000 researchers this week.

The results are for water samples taken in June, about three months after the power plant disaster, Buesseler said. In addition to thousands of water samples, researchers also sampled fish and plankton and found cesium-137 levels well below the legal health limit.

Woman claims doctor secretly sterilized her

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) -- When Sarah Cotton had severe stomach pain and bleeding in 2007, her sister Brenda Womble took her to see a doctor.

What they saw in CT scan images stunned them.

"We were just flabbergasted," Womble recalled.

The X-Ray images showed Cotton had an IUD - an intrauterine device designed to prevent pregnancy - in her body. Until that moment, Cotton never knew it was there.

The sisters began tracing back through Cotton's medical history, and realized the device had been implanted some 40 years before without her permission.

"It was something forced on her without her consent and I equate that as a woman being raped. It's something against her wishes," offered Womble - a professor at NC Central University.

Prosecutors seek to drop charges against soldier

MIDLAND, Texas — Prosecutors have filed a motion to dismiss charges against a soldier accused of trying to bring military-grade explosives on a cross-country flight from Texas to North Carolina.

The U.S. attorney's office said Friday it did not find evidence that Sgt. 1st Class Trey Scott Atwater knew he was carrying C4 aboard his carry-on bag Dec. 31 at the Midland airport.

The 30-year-old was charged with trying to bring explosives onto an airplane.

Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski 'Strongly Disagree' With Pat Buchanan's Exit From MSNBC

Morning Joe" co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski issued a statement on Friday saying that they "strongly disagree[d]" with Pat Buchanan's exit from MSNBC.

It was announced Thursday that Buchanan would be leaving the network after 10 years. He had not been seen on MSNBC since the October release of his latest book, "Suicide Of A Superpower." The book contained some typically controversial sections, such as a chapter titled "The End Of White America." Gay rights and civil rights groups launched a campaign against Buchanan, calling for him to be fired from MSNBC.

After a months-long absence, MSNBC president Phil Griffin finally said that Buchanan had been kept deliberately off of the air because of the contents of the book. On Thursday, Buchanan wrote a column saying that he had been hounded off the air by left-wing "blacklisters."

Acoustic Beatles- The Esher Demos

"In 1968, back from their disastrous confab with the Maharishi, the Beatles took their acoustic guitars to George's house in Esher and set down what has since come to be known as the Esher Demos. Most of the songs were later rerecorded for the White Album, but it's fascinating to hear how well-formed so many already were. Here, at its most stripped down, "Rocky Raccoon" even has the saloon piano solo (though mouthed rather than played). Some scrapped songs eventually turned up on solo albums, including John's "Child of Nature," which many will recognize as "Jealous Guy."

Hunters Shoot Animal Rights Drone Out of the Sky

The gun totin' boys at the Broxton Bridge Plantation hunting ground were planning on having themselves a good old fashioned pigeon hunt. South Carolina's unfortunately named S.H.A.R.K. animal rights group planned to expose them via aerial drone. Guess what happened.

The Times and Democrat reports that once the hopeful hunters knew they were going to be watched from above, they started to leave the private shooting plantation. SHARK decided to send up their drone anyway—above a group of cranky firearm-wielding southerners. Big mistake, SHARK. Their drone was quickly shot out of the sky:

"Seconds after it hit the air, numerous shots rang out," [SHARK leader] Hindi said in the release. "As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter." He claimed the shooters were "in tree cover" and "fled the scene on small motorized vehicles."
