Heroin deaths surpass gun homicides for the first time, CDC data shows
Opioid deaths continued to surge in 2015, surpassing 30,000 for the first time in recent history, according to CDC data released Thursday.
That marks an increase of nearly 5,000 deaths from 2014. Deaths involving powerful synthetic opiates, like fentanyl, rose by nearly 75 percent from 2014 to 2015.
Heroin deaths spiked too, rising by more than 2,000 cases. For the first time since at least the late 1990s, there were more deaths due to heroin than to traditional opioid painkillers, like hydrocodone and oxycodone.
"The epidemic of deaths involving opioids continues to worsen," said CDC Director Tom Frieden in a statement. "Prescription opioid misuse and use of heroin and illicitly manufactured fentanyl are intertwined and deeply troubling problems."

Police confirm shooting at Reno high school

RENO — Washoe County School District police confirmed a shooting occurred Wednesday at Hug High School and authorities were responding to the scene.
One person was taken to a hospital, according to Tim Broadway of the Reno Police Department.
An officer was involved in the shooting, according to school police.
The school is "currently stable and secure with heavy police presence at the school," according to a statement from the Washoe County School District

Trump's Victory Has Fearful Minorities Buying Up Guns
After Donald Trump's win, Yolanda Scott is upgrading the crowbar she keeps in her purse to a small-caliber pistol.
Scott, an African-American, is one of many minorities who have been flocking to gun stores to protect themselves, afraid Trump's victory will incite more hate crimes.
Minorities "feel that racists now feel like they can attack... just because the president is doing it," Earl Curtis, the African-American owner of Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantilly, Virginia, told NBC News.
Gun store owners told NBC News that since November 8 they're seeing up to four times as many black and minority customers — and black gun groups are reporting double the normal number of attendees at their meetings since the election.
So who will change their rhetoric first-

Student fatally stabs University of Southern California professor, police say
Student fatally stabs University of Southern California professor, police say
A student fatally stabbed a University of Southern California psychology professor Friday afternoon, officials said.
The professor, identified as Bosco Tjan in a letter released by the university, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Police Department.
A 911 call came in to authorities around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Los Angeles police Detective Meghan Aguilar told CNN affiliate KABC-TV. When USC officers arrived, they found the victim suffering multiple stab wounds and a male suspect still on the scene, she said.
The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local police station, according to Aguilar. Information on a motive wasn't immediately available, but police told the station they believe the attack was not random.
"This victim was targeted by the suspect so the safety of this campus is not in question," Aguilar told KABC.
The stabbing happened in the Seeley G. Mudd Building on the last day of classes before final exams.

quit whining about the Electoral College.
The EC did not fall from the sky unnoticed. It's been sitting there in the Constitution since ratification. Four times previously it resulted in a wonky election, most recently 2004. What was done when Democrats took power in 2008 to change or eliminate the EC? Nothing.
The election strategy was not "Let's win the popular vote to show what the people want." It was the road to 270.
Hillary Clinton doesn't appear all that interested in making scenic stops on her state-to-state quest to become president. The Democratic nominee is instead programming her GPS to take her on the quickest route to collect the 270 Electoral College votes she needs to win the White House.
With three months until Election Day, Clinton's campaign is focused on capturing the battleground states that have decided the most recent presidential elections, not so much on expanding the map.
Clinton's team doesn't rule out an effort at Arizona, a state with a booming population of Latino voters that polls find are loath to support Trump. And Georgia, a bastion of the Deep South, echoes recent population trends in other Southeastern states where Clinton is competing aggressively.
But neither is among the 11 battleground states that Clinton's television advertising plans and her travel schedule point to as her focus. Those states are the perennial top-tier targets Florida and Ohio, plus Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. President Barack Obama carried them all in 2008, and missed out on only North Carolina during his 2012 re-election campaign.
Leadership was very aware of the EC and specifically geared the campaign to the EC. Eleven states were targeted as key to victory. We lost 4-7 overall and in the three 'key' states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania 0-3. The winning strategy failed. It is disingenuous to complain about the rules after losing when you based your plan on winning by the rules.
Is the EC fair and should it be changed? Debatable and probably. Maybe next time we have the chance to change how the EC works or eliminate it we will act.
It has been three weeks
and is time to start accepting some facts:
-Trump is not going to quit. Since he announced he was running everyone has treated it as a joke and predicted when he will deliver the punchline and drop out. Didn't happen before his nomination, didn't happen after, didn't happen at the 11th hour before the election when every poll predicted a loss. It isn't going to happen.
-he is not going to be removed for mental incompetence. For Republicans to do so would be an admission that they nominated and supported a lunatic for President. They will never do so barring some drastic action that they can legitimately claim to have had no prior knowledge of such a deficiency. Being an arrogant, racist, misogynist asshole was known well ahead of time.
-we are not going to get to vote over due to widespread fraud or outside involvement. First off all such theories are still speculation. Second to have a new vote because a foreign agency was able to affect the Presidential election on a national scale would be the greatest failing of our intelligence and security agencies in the history of the country. Pearl Harbor and 9/11 would be the equivalent of a 'made you look' joke by comparison. Such a breach would be dealt with outside of the public eye or media scrutiny.
-the recount will amount to nothing. Some votes will change but not enough for even one state to change its electoral votes.
-the electoral college will do exactly what it is in place to do. They will vote to confirm the majority vote of their state. The electors are selected by the party they represent. A difference of 1% between the predicted electoral total and the actual result will be shocking
-the electoral college was not some buried secret Constitutional quirk. It was well known ahead of time and much discussion took place here about how many electoral votes were needed to win the election. We well knew that total popular vote had no bearing on winning the White House and was nearly assured to be in favor of Hillary. The key was to win by state to get electoral votes. We failed. Not only did we miss out on nearly every swing state, but we lost in states that were so assuredly going to vote Democrat that little to no effort was put into swaying to voters in those states.
-no matter what we think of and demographic, they did not cost us the election. Over 90,000,000 votes were left on the table claimed by no one. Those people stayed home. If we could have convinced 1% of them to GOTV the election would have been very different.
Why face so much negativeness? To finish the grief process. The world did not end on November 8 but no amount of wishing, hoping or what if-ing is going to change who will be sworn in as President in January. We need to move to the end of the grief cycle. To paraphrase:
ACCEPTANCE & HOPE-
During this, the last stage in this grief model, you learn to accept and deal with the reality of your situation. Acceptance does not necessarily mean instant happiness. Given the pain and turmoil you have experienced, you can never return to the carefree, untroubled YOU that existed before this tragedy. But you will find a way forward.
You will start to look forward and actually plan things for the future. There are more elections to come.
And win. We must not trust to complacency again, learn from our mistakes and let this loss make us stronger
