GOP Congressman Declines To Say Whether Every American Is Entitled To Eat

Rep. Adrian Smith (R-Neb.) refused to say whether “every American is entitled to eat” and the food stamps program is the best way to ensure that they have the food they need.

NPR’s Scott Simon interviewed Smith on Saturday about the farm bill and President Donald Trump’sproposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps. In the president’s budget, the White House is seeking $193 billion in cuts to SNAP over 10 years, an amount equal to more than one-quarter of the program’s cost over that period.

There is room for “very minor shifts” in SNAP that “make sure we do not harm the most vulnerable among us,” according to Smith.

“Especially for people in need we do not want to leave our most vulnerable without nutrition,” he said. “Looking at that, we always want to keep that in mind.”

2 Texas children die in hot car

Two young children were found dead Friday in Parker County, Texas, in what appeared to be a hot car incident.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, the mother of the children -- a 2-year-old girl and a 16-month-old boy -- found them in a locked vehicle.

The Tarrant County medical examiner's website identified the children as Juliet and Cavanaugh Ramirez.

Parker County Sheriff's Capt. Mark Arnett told CNN that according to the mother, the children were playing in a back room of their home when they disappeared. After searching the home, the mother began looking outside, where she eventually found them locked inside the car.

Woman Charged for Pointing Gun at Teen Allegedly Raping Dog

Woman Charged for Pointing Gun at Teen Allegedly Raping Dog

An Arkansas woman is facing a felony charge after pointing a gun at a teenage boy who she says was sexually assaulting her neighbor’s dog.

Kerrie Lenkerd told police in Centerton, a northwest Arkansas town, that she looked out a window and saw the teen with "the dog he raped last time."

"I got my gun out of my safe and went out my back door," Lenkerd told police, according to a court filing. "I told him to get on the f---ing ground and pointed my gun at him."

The boy, identified only as NM, 14 years old, in court documents, jumped over a fence and ran. As he fled, Lenkerd fired a shot into the grass "to scare him," she said.

Middle School Students Superlative Award Makes Fun of Her ADHD

Middle School Student’s Superlative Award Makes Fun of Her ADHD

Superlative awards are supposed to be a funny way to acknowledge students for their personalities, talents, or other nonacademic achievements. A middle school in Georgia has illustrated how they can also be hurtful, after awarding “Most Likely to ‘Not Pay Attention’” to an eighth-grade girl who has been diagnosed with ADHD.

“I feel like it was very derogatory, I feel like it was humiliating, and this was held as an assembly with the school,” the girl’s mother, Nicole Edwards, told Fox 5 News in Washington, D.C. According to Edwards, the original award her daughter won was “most likely to ask a question that has already been answered,” which doesn’t sound much better.

“I find it very offensive and demeaning,” psychologist George Sachs, a New York-based specialist in ADD and ADHD, told Yahoo Beauty via email. “While it may not be the students’ job, it should be one of the [faculty members’] or teachers’ job to correct whoever awarded this and help them understand that ADHD is a real disability, like diabetes, and that making light of it is unhelpful and downright discriminating.”

Sachs adds: “Many individuals with ADD struggle with self-esteem, as their disability is invisible, and unlike others that require crutches, etc., ADD is often seen as not working hard or being lazy. But it is a real disorder according to the diagnostic manual.”

Student Quoted in Brainerd High School Yearbook Tells Her Side Of Story

Student Quoted in Brainerd High School Yearbook Tells Her Side Of Story

The 15-year-old girl said she and an acquaintance were chatting at Brainerd High School in the fall of 2016.

She said she remembers the person asking her what she thought about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during casual conversation.

She said her response was that she did not like him.

The teen said the acquaintance asked her if that's all she had to say about him.

Therefore, she said, she joked that someone should behead him. She said they both laughed about that.

Man caught on video punching female security guard apologizes after surrendering

Man caught on video punching female security guard apologizes after surrendering

A man caught on video punching a female security guard in River North is apologizing after surrendering to police, saying through a representative "there are consequences he knows he has to face."

"He knew what he did was wrong," Dawn Valenti said as she stood outside the Area Central police station where the man was being held Tuesday. "I can't tell you how sorry he is.

"He hit a woman," she said. "That's not what he does."

Valenti, who is well-known for helping victims of Chicago violence, was not defending his actions. "I did not condone what he did,'' Valenti said.

"He hit a woman," she said. "That's not what he does."
Video evidence suggests that is what he does. It wasn't an accident.

Hopefully the consequences he faces are severe.

2nd Anniversary- Be Smart

This Mother's Day Week is the second anniversary of Bloomberg's Mom's Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety launch of the Be SMART for Kids campaign. http://besmartforkids.org/

I noted and promoted this in 2015, https://www.democraticunderground.com/1172166981 , as a noble effort with a very worthy goal; reduce child gun related deaths. It seemed to be something everyone could support without reservation.

Now two years in, the saying "Talk is cheap" come to mind. The program claims 1000 "presenters" on their facebook page yet a google search of Be SMART events or presentations returns comes up with very sad results. A handful of churches seem to had announced upcoming presentations for 2016 and one (1) for 2017 so far. The Group's facebook page leads one to believe they may attend an event once or twice a month nationally. I have tried to contact them about becoming a presenter and promoting their programs in my firearms classes but they are hard to reach. The contact via the website demands you enter a zip code however there is no box to enter such. Facebook messages have gone unanswered.

Besmart also claims to distribute free gun locks. The quiz page claims 25,274 locks; unless you refresh then it may say 24,855 locks. These numbers haven't changed in six months- go ahead, check now> http://besmartforkids.org/take-the-quiz/
I have done an extensive online and can find more evidence that bigfoot, Santa Claus and unicorns exist than the existence and distribution of one of these locks.

Both Everytown and MDA also seem to have forgotten about this program as the anniversary of this program, launched with much fanfare, has gone unnoted. Apparently Bloomberg's $50million donation didn't include a line item to buy some locks which could save kids lives... Sad.

>For anyone interested in obtaining a free lock for their gun, go to Project ChildSafe http://www.projectchildsafe.org/ developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and supported by the firearms industry and government grants. In 2016 they distributed 334,800 free gun locks http://www.projectchildsafe.org/sites/default/files/PCS_2016Annual%20Review_FINAL.pdf .
(Ironically gun control organizations opposed a $2.4 million government grant to Project ChildSafe in 2015. The purpose of the grant was to purchase and distribute more locks and educate gun owners on the importance of keeping guns from children's hands. The grant was given)

San Diego police killed boy, 15, in school parking lot

Source: ABC

Police shot and killed a 15-year-old student Saturday after he pointed a BB gun at them in a high school parking lot, authorities said.

The Torrey Pines High School student called 911 shortly before 3:30 a.m. to ask officers to check on the welfare of an unarmed boy in front of the school, according to a police statement.

He didn't name the boy, but investigators later determined he was referring to himself, police said.

When two officers arrived, they spotted a youth in the front parking lot. But as they got out of their patrol cars, he pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer, police said.

Dad tells daughter 'you're dead to me' for going to prom with black man

Dad tells daughter 'you're dead to me' for going to prom with black man

High school seniors Phillip Freeman and Anna Hayes, from Lake Village, Ark., attended their school prom last week.

Although the two good friends had a fantastic time, Anna’s father didn’t approve of her attending with a black student, and subsequently went on a racist tirade after seeing social media photos of the event. “We are done. I wont be coming to your graduation. Nor will I pay for your college. Go live with the n***ers,” he begins in a text message.

“I went to prom with a black guy so that’s a problem? Racist much,” Anna responded.

“Yes I am,” he admitted. “Your dead to me.”
