If Democrats win both of Tuesday’s Senate runoff elections in Georgia, the Senate would be evenly split, 50-50, between the two major parties.

...............................

.........................
— — —

1. How many times has this happened in U.S. history?

Only three.
.......................
...................

— — —

2. Who runs the Senate, if no party has a majority?

The party that holds the vice presidency. The Constitution makes the vice president the president of the Senate, with the power to cast the decisive vote in cases of a tie.

In 2001, for instance, Democrats had control at the outset, during the few days when Al Gore was still vice president. Then, when Richard B. Cheney became vice president, Republicans took control.

This year, a 50-50 split would give control to the Democrats, with Kamala Harris able to cast the deciding vote as vice president.

Video shows Romney being called "traitor" by Trump fans while on flight

Source: cbs news

January 6, 2021 / 1:12 AM / CBS News

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah faced chants of "traitor" while on a flight from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. A video posted to Twitter appears to show a small group of passengers chanting, at least one of whom appears to not be properly wearing a mask.

"Resign, Mitch!" one woman, seen with a mask on her chin that failed to cover her mouth and nose, yelled. She accused Romney of not listening to his constituents.

Romney has previously criticized an investigation conducted by the Senate Homeland Security Commission of Biden's son, Hunter, who was named chairman of Burisma while Biden served as vice president. Romney did vote in favor of issuing subpoenas in that probe, however.

An additional video posted to Twitter showed Romney being confronted prior to boarding his flight. In the video, Romney can be seen sitting at a terminal in the Salt Lake City airport. The woman who appears to be filming confronts Romney, claiming he does not support Donald Trump.

DC Police make several arrests ahead of major pro-Trump election protest

Source: nbc news

Jan. 5, 2021, 10:59 PM CST

WASHINGTON — Several people were arrested in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday in connection to protests ahead of Congress' certification of the Electoral College votes on Wednesday.

Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police said six arrests were made as of 9 p.m. ET, including some involving multiple charges. Those charges included a handful that were weapons-related, including carrying firearms without a license, possession of unregistered ammunition and possession of an unregistered firearm. Protesters were also charged with assaulting a police officer and simple assault.

Tuesday's rallies in support of President Donald Trump, who refuses to accept his November electoral loss to President-elect Joe Biden, featured an array of conservative speakers and drew in throngs of Trump supporters who traveled to the nation's capital ahead of Wednesday's proceedings.

Though the formal events ended earlier Tuesday, protesters remained out in the street well into the night, with videos on social media showing some clashing with police.

UK hospitals stagger as new virus variant takes huge toll

Source: abc news

Britain is facing a long, bleak winter as cold, wet weather and a more contagious variant of coronavirus put unprecedented strain on the nation’s hospitals

By DANICA KIRKA Associated Press January 5, 2021, 1:15 PM

LONDON -- Britain is facing a long, bleak winter as cold, wet weather and a more contagious variant of the coronavirus put unprecedented strain on the nation's hospitals and force record numbers of patients to wait 12 hours or more, sometimes on ambulance gurneys, before receiving treatment.

That picture made Prime Minister Boris Johnson order a third national lockdown that started Tuesday and requires everyone in England to stay at home for at least the next six weeks except for exercise, medical appointments, essential shopping and a few other limited exceptions.

“It’s not hyperbole to say that the (National Health Service) is going through probably the toughest time in living memory,? said Siva Anandaciva, chief analyst of the King’s Fund, a U.K. think tank that focuses on health and social care. “I was speaking to an emergency care physician from London last week, and she was saying that half of her shift was spent delivering care in ambulances because they couldn’t get the patients into the emergency department.?

England's previous nationwide lockdown ran from Nov. 5 to Dec. 5. In announcing the new stay-at-home order, Johnson said it won’t be reviewed for lifting until at least mid-February. By that time, the government hopes to have given one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to about 13 million people who are most at risk, potentially allowing some relaxation of the restrictions....................................

Trump just demanded, on national TV, that the Vice President of the United States use his position of President of the Senate to reject the certified results of the election, set aside millions of votes, and install Trump for a second term.

That is something that just happened.

EPA finalizes rule to limit science behind public health safeguards

Source: Reuters

The Trump administration’s "transparency” rule requires researchers to disclose their raw data. Opponents argue the goal is to exclude important research on human health.

Jan. 4, 2021 at 7:06 p.m. CST

...........................

The “Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science” rule, which the administration began pursuing early in President Trump’s term, would require researchers to disclose the raw data involved in their public health studies before the agency could rely upon their conclusions. It will apply this new set of standards to “dose-response studies,” which evaluate how much a person’s exposure to a substance increases the risk of harm.

In an opinion piece posted Monday night in the Wall Street Journal, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the rule “will prioritize transparency and increase opportunities for the public to access the ‘dose-response’ data that underlie significant regulations and influential scientific information.”

“Dose-response data explain the relationship between the amount of a chemical or a pollutant and its effect on human health and the environment — and are at the foundation of EPA’s regulations,” he continued. “If the American people are to be regulated by interpretation of these scientific studies, they deserve to scrutinize the data as part of the scientific process and American self-government.”

Many of the nation’s leading researchers and academic organizations, however, argue that the new criteria will actually restrict the EPA from using some of the most consequential research on human subjects because it often includes confidential medical records and other proprietary data that cannot be released due to privacy concerns....................................

Revealed: David Perdue bought bank stocks after meeting financial officials

David Perdue, the Georgia Republican facing a Senate runoff election on Tuesday, has twice bought a significant number of shares in a US bank shortly after meeting with financial policy makers, raising more questions about his prolific stock trading while in office................................

...............Perdue bought additional shares in the bank two years later, on 18 May 2017, two days after a half-hour meeting with then Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen.................

...............The new revelations come as Perdue’s frequent stock trading while in office has come under increased scrutiny in the press ahead of his runoff Senate election on Tuesday. If Democrats win two runoff elections, it will transfer control of the Senate from Republicans to Democrats.

Previous media reports have focused on how Perdue has faced federal scrutiny for his frequent stock trading while in office, and whether his position as a senator with access to market-sensitive information, especially during the pandemic, may have influenced some trades. The New York Times, citing multiple anonymous sources, said Perdue’s sale of $1m in stock in a financial company called Cardlytics, where he served on the board, drew the attention of investigators at the Department of Justice last spring, who were undertaking “a broad review of the senator’s prolific trading around the outset of the coronavirus pandemic for possible evidence of insider trading”.......................
