Kevin McCarthy Is Donating the Cash He Took From Rudy Giuliani's Indicted Pals

Source: vice.com

One of President Trump's biggest defenders in the Ukraine affair took campaign contributions from Ukrainian-Americans working with Rudy Giuliani to dig up dirt on Joe Biden.

by Cameron Joseph Oct 10 2019, 4:29pm

WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said on Thursday that he’d return campaign donations from a pair of Ukrainian-Americans working with Rudy Giuliani to boost President Trump after the two men were arrested for allegedly violating campaign finance laws.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) and the National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans’ main campaign organization, received substantial donations from Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, a pair of businessmen who have been working with Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, in his push to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

The men were arrested Wednesday and charged with allegedly funneling illegal campaign contributions to a Trump-friendly super PAC as well as other candidates.

The donations to McCarthy and the GOP were listed as made by Parnas on June 29 2018, and totaled $17,000: $2,700 directly to McCarthy, $3,300 to the NRCC, and $11,000 to Protect the House, a joint fundraising committee whose beneficiaries include McCarthy and the NRCC. That donation appears to line up with a $11,000 contribution mentioned in the indictment for an unidentified “Committee 3.” An “Igor Furman,” meanwhile, made a $100,000 donation to the same committee just weeks earlier. The indictment alleges that “Furman” is in fact Igor Fruman, who intentionally misspelled his name to cover his tracks. The Parnas donations, the indictment alleges, were pass-through donations from Fruman as well, who’d already given the legal maximum to the committee with his first donation..............................

GOP leader struggles with reality (again) trying to defend Trump

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/gop-leader-struggles-reality-again-trying-defend-trump

It’s been four days since Donald Trump publicly called on China and Ukraine to go after Joe Biden, and the president’s Republican allies still aren’t sure what to say about it. Some argue he was kidding – an absurd claim, under the circumstances – while a few in the GOP have been willing to make their dissatisfaction known. Most in the party have been content to hide and say nothing.

But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) blazed his own trail, making an argument no one else has been willing to make. TPM reported:

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) made a befuddling claim on “Fox and Friends” Monday morning, arguing that President Trump actually didn’t tell China to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden on live-television. […]

During an interview on “Fox and Friends” McCarthy was asked about the emerging talking point among Republicans — that Trump was clearly just joking or trolling China when he asked the country to probe his political opponent. McCarthy not only didn’t respond to whether the move was just a joke, he argued that Trump’s “not saying China should investigate.”

“You watch what the President said, he’s not saying China should investigate,” McCarthy said.

There are some elements of any political scandal that involve judgment calls and matters of subjectivity, but this isn’t one of them. Four days ago, Donald Trump stood on the White House South Lawn, appeared in front of a significant group of journalists, and said, “China should start an investigation into the Bidens.”

I suppose it’s possible some very creative person in the House GOP leadership might make the case that there’s an ever-so-subtle difference between “China should investigate” and “China should start an investigation,” but I’m comfortable concluding that no fair-minded observer would ever take such an argument seriously.

What we’re left with is an example of Kevin McCarthy, desperate to shield Trump from accountability, failing to familiarize himself with the most basic elements of a scandal – for the second time in eight days...........................................

Trump just quietly cut legal immigration by up to 65%--Trump made his adviser Stephen Miller's dream

well, Trump got his (Melania and her chain migrator parents) and to hell with the rest of us.

Trump just quietly cut legal immigration by up to 65%

This is what immigration restrictionists have been waiting for.

By Nicole Narea@nicolenarea Oct 9, 2019, 1:40pm EDT

With one proclamation signed late Friday evening last week, President Donald Trump made his adviser Stephen Miller’s dreams of restricting legal immigration a reality.

When it goes into effect November 3, the proclamation will make getting into the US much harder for immigrants sponsored by family members, the phenomenon Trump has excoriated as “chain migration.” It will throw up a barrier to those coming through the diversity visa lottery — the subject of Trump’s “shithole countries” rant — which allows the US to accept 55,000 immigrants annually from countries with historically low levels of immigration.

Researchers estimate it could keep up to two-thirds of future immigrants out who would be admitted under current law.

Under the proclamation, immigrants who do not have health insurance and cannot afford to pay medical care costs will not be able to move to the US permanently.

The move could bar roughly 375,000 immigrants annually, based on projections of data from fiscal year 2017, according to Julia Gelatt, a senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute.

Those 375,000 immigrants won’t be affected at random. The proclamation targets immigrants who have come to the US legally under policies Trump and his advisers often attack..................................

White House aides try disappearing act amid impeachment talk

Source: AP

By JILL COLVIN today

WASHINGTON (AP) — They’ve skipped the high-profile Sunday TV shows and avoided driveway chat sessions with reporters. Few who are typically eager to defend the president have appeared at all on television this month.
Full Coverage: Trump impeachment inquiry

White House officials close to President Donald Trump are pulling off a disappearing act, remaining largely absent from public view — in the middle of the storm over impeachment.

“We invited the White House on to answer questions on the show this morning,” CNN’s Jake Tapper explained to his viewers on Sunday’s “State of the Union.” ?They did not offer a guest.”

It’s a well-worn strategy in the Trump White House: Senior officials conveniently manage to be elsewhere when major controversies engulf the building. The frequent absences of Jared Kushner, the Republican president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, and presidential daughter Ivanka Trump during moments of consequence have long been a running joke among their detractors. Their detours included a trip to Florida during the partial government shutdown.

Plenty of others have jumped town during tense moments.

As Trump struggled with mounting Republican defections over his decision to declare a national emergency to pay for the stalled border wall, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney wasn’t at the Capitol cajoling his former colleagues or in the West Wing making calls. Instead, he was in Las Vegas for an annual friends and family getaway......................................................................

Pete Sessions is "Congressman 1" in indictment of Rudy Guliani associates, reports say

Multiple news outlets have reported that the former House chairman, now running for Congress in another district, was involved in the effort to oust the U.S. ambassador to the Ukraine.

WASHINGTON — Former U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions is an unnamed member of Congress mentioned in an indictment against two business associates of President Trump’s personal attorney, Rudolph Giuliani, according to NBC News.

The two Soviet-born men, Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas, were arrested late Wednesday night at Dulles Airport outside of Washington, D.C, per ABC News. The Wall Street Journal reported that the two men are accused of “violating campaign finance rules, including funneling Russian money into President Trump’s campaign.”

Regarding Sessions, the indictment against the two men states that they “committed to raise $20,000 or more for a then-sitting U.S. Congressman” who is referred to in the court document as “Congressman-1.” The indictment goes on to state that the congressman “had been the beneficiary of approximately $3 million” in donations from a campaign committee. NBC News and other outlets identified that person as Sessions and reported that the committee was a Trump-aligned super PAC.

Federal authorities alleged that around the same time, Parnas "sought Congressman-1's assistance in causing the U.S. government to remove or recall” the American ambassador to Ukraine at the time, Marie Yovanovitch. Yovanovitch was a well-regarded diplomat who came into disfavor within the Trump administration and was removed from her post earlier this year.

Karen Pence says she loves the way Trump treats young women

In a shocking move, Second Lady Karen Pence told a Minnesota audience that she loves the way President Donald Trump treats young women.

“Tonight, in Minnesota, state the campaign really wants to win, @SecondLady is on stage praising POTUS. She says she likes how he treats young women and sees the respect he has for his daughters,” tweeted New York Times correspondent Katie Rogers.

“As a mom, I was all in,” Mrs. Pence said, after she watched Trump with her daughter, Charlotte.

Trump boasted that he would walk into the backstage changing rooms at the Miss USA pageant to look at the half-naked girls there. It came in a 2005 interview with Howard Stern, where Trump bragged about what he would do to look at the teens, some as young as 15.

“Our first introduction to him was when we were at the dress rehearsal and half-naked changing into our bikinis,” said Tasha Dixon, a former Miss USA contestant. “He just came strolling right in. There was no second to put a robe on or any sort of clothing or anything. Some girls were topless. Other girls were naked.”...................
