Poll: Majority Oppose Trump/Ryan Plan To Privatize Medicare

December 13, 2016 Oliver Willis Politics 0
Paul Ryan

A majority of the people responding to a new poll say they oppose the Donald Trump/Paul Ryan plan to privatize the Medicare system.

According to Morning Consult, 55 percent of voters say that Medicare should continue on its current successful path, while only 29 percent support transforming it into a private system. Ryan and other Republicans have used the euphemism “premium support” to describe the process of turning over the Medicare system to private, for-profit companies that would prioritize their own profits over patient health and safety.

Morning Consult notes that the option to transform Medicare has remained at the same level of unpopularity, with a November 2014 Kaiser Family Foundaiton report showing only 26 percent supporting privatization.......................

.........................Democrats seized on potential Medicare changes as a regular attack point in the weeks following the election. While President-elect Donald Trump sought to differentiate himself from other Republicans throughout the campaign by saying he would not touch Medicare or Social Security, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Rep. Tom Price (Ga.), Trump’s pick for Health and Human Services secretary, have supported moving the program to a premium support system.

The older the voter, the more likely they are to want to maintain Medicare as it is now. Among those surveyed, only 18- to 29-year-olds had more favor reform (41 percent) than those who favored keeping the system as is (39 percent). Among seniors age 65 and older, 67 percent said they thought the system should remain as is, while 19 percent favored the premium support model.

Of the entire survey group, 15 percent said they “strongly supported” a shift to the government helping seniors purchase a private insurance policy and another 22 percent said they “somewhat supported” it. Another 14 percent said they “somewhat oppose” a shift, while 30 percent said they strongly opposed changes. Twenty percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion.

The poll also indicates more people think the proposed changes would do more harm than good.
Forty-eight percent of respondents said the proposal was a bad idea, while 34 percent called it a good idea. Nineteen percent said they didn’t know or had no opinion........................

Alex Jones Scrubs Pizzagate Content; Complaint Reveals New Tie Connecting Shooter To Jones

Source: mediamatters.org

2 hours 10 sec ago ››› ERIC HANANOKI

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is scrubbing online content pushing the false and dangerous conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton’s campaign trafficked children through a D.C. pizzeria. A man who recently entered the pizzeria with a rifle and fired shots reportedly shared a piece of Jones’ content before the shooting; the video he shared is still on the website.

Jones is a radio host who has claimed that the government perpetrated the 9/11 attacks and the tragedies at Columbine, Oklahoma City, Sandy Hook, and the Boston Marathon. Jones has also repeatedly accused the Clintons of murder. He has been elevated from the fringes to the mainstream by President-elect Donald Trump, who appeared on his show and praised his “amazing” reputation. Trump adviser Roger Stone is also a regular Jones guest and contributor.

Jones and his Infowars website have promoted the false conspiracy theory dubbed "pizzagate," which alleges that top Clinton associates such as campaign manager John Podesta are trafficking children through the Comet Ping Pong restaurant.

The false claims took a dangerous turn when Edgar Maddison Welch fired an assault rifle inside the pizzeria because he was trying to “self-investigate” the conspiracy theory. FBI special agent Justin Holgate stated in a criminal complaint that Welch said he sent a video on the night of December 1 with the message “Watch PIZZAGATE: The Bigger Picture on YouTube” to a friend before the shooting:

Since Donald Trump became president-elect, he’s made some attempts to soften his blowhard, tough-guy image. The former reality star decided against trying to imprison Hillary Clinton. He’s said his wall might be a fence and that he might keep parts of Obamacare. Trump even told perpetrators of hate crimes to “stop it” post-election, after consistently encouraging violence at his rallies just months earlier.

Of course, Trump has a tendency to contradict himself ad infinitum, so no matter what he says, it’s hard to gauge his actual positions on anything. The best representation of his true values, rather, are the people – primarily men – he chooses to surround him.
Tell us: how are you preparing for the Trump presidency?

Trump’s inner circle and cabinet appointees prove the president-elect loves bullies who prize total power over inclusion. His cabinet is shaping up to be full of people who believe Making America Great Again is code for white, wealthy men maintaining privilege and control over people of color, women and anybody else who can’t afford a penthouse.

Eighty-five percent of Trump’s picks for cabinet are men, and yes, most of them are rich and white to boot. Sure, there are women nominees, and it’s still early days. But there’s no doubt who Trump favors, and if we’re known by the company we keep, his taste in white, megalomaniac men is incredibly disturbing. ................................

Scientists are right to preserve data and archive websites before those who want to dismantle federal climate change research programs storm the castle.”

To be clear, neither Trump nor his transition team has said that the new administration plans to manipulate or curtail publicly available data. The transition team did not respond to a request for comment. But some scientists aren’t taking any chances.

Trump team working to remove top NATO official

Source: washington post

By Josh Rogin December 13 at 7:01 AM

The incoming Trump administration is looking to get rid of the No. 2 official at NATO, an American nominated by President Obama whom most Republicans don’t trust. But NATO’s Brussels leadership may not play along, setting up an early confrontation with President Trump.

Two Trump transition sources told me that a representative of the transition team met late last month with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels and delivered a private but deliberate message: The incoming administration would like Stoltenberg to replace Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller. Gottemoeller, who was nominated for the post by Obama this past March, started her job in Brussels only in October and has a multi-year contract. She works for NATO, not the U.S. government.

If NATO leadership agreed to remove Gottemoeller, it would set a new precedent for U.S. government control over American officials in top NATO positions. If the NATO leadership doesn’t agree, the incoming Trump administration could work to marginalize Gottemoeller and render her ineffective. Either way, her role is set to change when the new U.S. president comes into office.
............................

Gottemoeller’s allies see the Trump transition team’s quiet move to replace her in NATO as a brazen, brute-force tactic to pressure the alliance to bend to Trump’s will.

“This is a whispering campaign by schoolyard bullies......................

Clinton Campaign Presses for Intelligence on Russian Hacking

By andrew taylor, associated press

WASHINGTON — Dec 12, 2016, 1:59 PM ET

...............Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, whose emails were stolen and posted on the internet, said "never before in the history of our Republic have we seen such an effort to undermine the bedrock of our democracy."

Podesta said the campaign supports an effort by a handful of members of the Electoral College, including a Republican who says he won't vote for President-elect Donald Trump, to be briefed on U.S. intelligence on potential links between Trump's campaign and Russia.

Ten electors on Monday released an "open letter" to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper requesting information about ongoing investigations on ties between Trump and "Russian government interference in the election."

Podesta agrees with Senate Intelligence Democrats who last week called for President Barack Obama to declassify and make public intelligence information on Russia's attempts to interfere in the election.

"The administration owes it to the American people to explain what it knows regarding the extent and manner of Russia's interference and this be done as soon as possible," Podesta said in a statement....................

Minority Leader Pelosi, D-Calif., who receives super-secret intelligence as one of the top leaders of Congress, followed hours later with a call for an investigation by an independent commission.

"The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Russia interfered in U.S. elections," Pelosi said. "There must be no equivocation or ignoring the seriousness of the intelligence community's conclusion about Russia's actions.".......................

Donald Trumps Theory On Catching Hackers Gives Cybersecurity Pros The Giggles

Source: Huff post

Along those lines: Is it impossible to track down an embezzler unless you see him taking the money?
12/12/2016 02:44 pm ET

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump claimed Monday that tracking computer hackers is virtually impossible unless they are caught “in the act” – a theory that comes as news to cybersecurity experts.

................

“That’s just silly,” laughed John Schindler, who worked for 10 years as an analyst at the National Security Agency. “That is just simply false.”

A review of forensic evidence pointed to the Russians, said James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “No one expects Putin to burst into tears on national TV and confess. Ambiguity is normal in espionage, but there shouldn’t be any doubt,” he said.

Trump’s Monday morning tweet ― one of two that countered fresh reports that Russia had actively tried to boost his candidacy by hacking Democratic emails ― also asked, “Why wasn’t this brought up before election?” ..............

President-elect Donald Trump asked why the issue of Russian hacking wasn’t raised prior to the election. But it was, at the third presidential debate with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
