Michael Flynn judge says pardon doesn't mean ex-national security adviser is innocent

Source: Washington Post

Dec. 8, 2020 at 12:54 p.m. CST

A federal judge dismissed Michael Flynn’s prosecution Tuesday after President Trump’s pardon, but said the act of clemency does not mean the former national security adviser is innocent of lying to FBI agents about his talks with the Russian government before Trump took office.

In formally ending Flynn’s three-year legal saga, U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan said he probably would have denied the Justice Department’s controversial effort this year to drop the case, which Democrats and many legal experts said appeared to be an attempt by Attorney General William P. Barr to bend the rule of law to help a Trump ally.

Sullivan expressed deep skepticism about the Justice Department’s stated reasons for abandoning the case, criticizing it for applying a different set of rules to Flynn, who twice pleaded guilty to lying about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador during special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe of 2016 election interference...................................

“President Trump’s decision to pardon Mr. Flynn is a political decision, not a legal one. Because the law recognizes the President’s political power to pardon, the appropriate course is to dismiss this case as moot,” Sullivan wrote, adding: “However, the pardon ‘does not, standing alone, render [Mr. Flynn] innocent of the alleged violation.’ ”.....................................

Trump walked out of the Oval Office when asked about inauguration during a Medal of Freedom ceremony

I o-way.

Trump walked out of the Oval Office when asked about inauguration during a Medal of Freedom ceremony. So embarrassing and completely pathetic. #TrumpIsACompleteFailure

Today @realDonaldTrump
wandered out of his own office and left Medal of Freedom recipient, Dan Gable, standing there with no clue what to do.

"More Presidential than anyone in history."

Background: Trump used Dan Gable as a prop to win Iowa (sic) back in October. Now he simply has no use for him after the photo op.

Also, Trump has a LOT of difficulty saying Iowa.

Covid-19 vaccine: First person receives Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine in UK

Source: BBC

Published 10 minutes ago

A 90-year-old woman has become the first person to be given a Covid jab as part of the mass vaccination programme being rolled out across the UK.

Margaret Keenan, who turns 91 next week, said it was the "best early birthday present".

She was given the injection at 06:31 GMT - the first of 800,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that will be given in the coming weeks.

Up to four million more are expected by the end of the month.

Hubs in the UK will vaccinate over-80s and some health and care staff - the programme aims to protect the most vulnerable and return life to normal.

Matron May Parsons administered Ms Keenan's vaccine at University Hospital in Coventry.

Ms Keenan, who is originally from Enniskillen, said: "I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19, it's the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the new year after being on my own for most of the year."

"I can't thank May and the NHS staff enough who have looked after me tremendously, and my advice to anyone offered the vaccine is to take it - if I can have it at 90 then you can have it too."

The UK is the first country in the world to start using the Pfizer vaccine after regulators approved its use last week.....................................

Elevating Fringe Theories, Ron Johnson Questions Virus Science

Source: nytimes

The Wisconsin Republican has transformed his Senate panel into a forum for amplifying dubious theories and questionable treatments pushed by President Trump.

Dec. 7, 2020

WASHINGTON — In choosing a slate of doctors to testify about coronavirus treatments before his committee on Tuesday, Senator Ron Johnson has assembled a cast of witnesses who question much of the public health consensus about the virus.

There is a prominent vaccine skeptic, an outspoken critic of masking and social distancing, and at least two doctors who have promoted the use of an anti-parasitic drug that government scientists have recommended against using to treat the coronavirus.

It is the latest example of how Mr. Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican who has used his powerful investigative panel to amplify groundless accusations pushed by President Trump, has now embraced the role of the Senate’s leading Covid contrarian.

Even as some of his Republican colleagues have sought to use their platforms to encourage Americans to take precautions against the spread of the virus and persuade the public that vaccines against it will be safe and vital, Mr. Johnson has suggested that the dangers of the coronavirus have been overblown and excessively regulated. And twice in the past three weeks, Mr. Johnson has used his gavel on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to elevate voices who public health experts say represent fringe beliefs...........................

Peter Navarro referred for disciplinary action for Hatch Act violations

Source: citizensForeethics.org

December 7, 2020

Washington—The Office of Special Counsel has recommended that disciplinary action be taken against Peter Navarro for repeatedly violating the Hatch Act, following complaints from CREW. OSC found that Navarro, an Assistant to the President and Director of the Office for Trade and Manufacturing Policy, violated the Hatch Act on multiple occasions when he engaged in political activity in his official capacity.

According to the finding, Navarro “committed these violations after having received training on the Hatch Act and, for most of the violations, while knowing that OSC was investigating him for engaging in the same prohibited political activity.”

“In an administration full of people illegally using their government positions to influence an election, Navarro has been one of the worst,” CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said. “We thank OSC for their thorough investigation and finding of Navarro’s repeated wrongdoing.”

The Hatch Act prohibits executive branch employees from “us[ing their] official authority or influence for the purpose of interfering with or affecting the result of an election.” “Political activity” is defined as “an activity directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office, or partisan political group.”

CREW filed several complaints against Navarro for violating the Hatch Act during multiple television appearances on Fox Business and MSNBC and on social media by repeatedly making politically-charged statements in support of President Trump’s reelection campaign and against Joe Biden.

“Navarro’s blatant violations of the Hatch Act are rivaled only by Kellyanne Conway,” Bookbinder said. “This isn’t about not knowing better, it is about a lack of interest in following the law, even when the cost to our democracy is severe.”.........................
