Sanders supporters' courtship of Clinton superdelegates may be backfiring

By Luciana Lopez

(Reuters) - Backers of Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders have launched a campaign to win over some of his rival Hillary Clinton's most prized supporters - the superdelegates that can make the difference in a tight race for the party's nomination.

But some emails, phone messages, and petitions sent by the Sanders boosters have backfired, upsetting superdelegates with their aggressive tone and leading many to dig in their heels for Clinton, according to interviews conducted by Reuters.

The drive to flip Clinton's super delegates has not been sanctioned by Sanders' campaign, his spokesman Michael Briggs said.
...............................

However, the unofficial push could complicate the U.S. Senator from Vermont's efforts to woo the critical bloc in the coming months.

The effort has at times taken an angry tone, some of the messages reviewed by Reuters showed, reflecting the anti-establishment tinge of the 2016 presidential race where many voters are unhappy with Washington insiders. ................................

How Bernie Sanders, the Socialist, Quietly Entered the Top 4% of Earners

A close look at Bernie Sanders’ finances.
...................................

And yet, by dint of his success as an anti-capitalist politician, Sanders has managed to make a quite comfortable living. While Sanders wouldn’t describe himself as rich, the scourge of the 1% has income that puts him in the top 3.8% of American households, according to CNBC.

Just as Sanders has managed to accumulate significant assets and pull down a six-figure income while being hostile to business and capitalism, his campaign has done the same. Eschewing PACs and high-dollar fundraisers on Wall Street, Sanders has managed to raise a stunning $95 million, from a virtual army of 3 million small donors.

Here’s how Sanders became America’s six-figure socialist:

Virtually all of the couple’s assets are in Jane’s name, and they own a condo in D.C. and a rental property in Vermont..

Scott Walker was target of the John Doe all along

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/govt-and-politics/gab-official-scott-walker-was-always-the-principal-target-of/article_51aa480a-0ec7-5922-8c05-c1fa825471a7.html

Gov. Scott Walker “was always the principal target” of a now-halted criminal investigation into his recall campaign, the state’s top ethics administrator wrote in a June 2014 email released Friday.

The email from Government Accountability Board Ethics Division Administrator Jonathan Becker was written within minutes of special prosecutor Francis Schmitz issuing a statement on June 26, 2014, saying Walker was not a target of the probe. The Wisconsin Supreme Court ended the investigation in July saying the investigation’s legal theory was invalid.

“I am thoroughly disgusted by your proposed press statement and it is simply not true,” Becker wrote. “The other side wants to obfuscate the case and make it seem like we are attacking independent (groups) and it needs to be clear that we are investigating a CANDIDATE’S improper coordination.”

EDIT: Hopefully the supreme court takes this case up now. The attorneys were granted an extention to file until March 31 iirc.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D, Austin to endorse Hillary Monday in San Antonio with Bill Clinton

Lloyd Doggett, Hillary Clinton's Newest Superdelegate

http://www.texastribune.org/2016/02/28/lloyd-doggett-to-be-hillary-clinton-superdelegate/

*This story has been updated throughout.

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, will endorse former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the presidency.

Doggett confirmed his plans on Sunday; he is expected to appear with former President Bill Clinton at a Monday campaign event at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Theater in San Antonio,
located in the congressman's 35th District.

Doggett is a superdelegate; as a Democratic member of Congress, he is also an unpledged delegate to the Democratic national convention and can offer his support to the candidate he chooses — regardless of who Texas voters support. In 2008, Doggett remained neutral during the divisive delegate fight between Clinton and then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama. His endorsement means that every member of the Democratic federal delegation except U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-El Paso, is publicly behind Clinton.

Clinton dominates the superdelegate race in Texas and the rest of the country. ..........................

Bernie Sanders' Nuclear Waste Votes Divide Texas Activists

In the late 1990s, when now-U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont was a member of the House, he supported a compact between Maine, Vermont and Texas that originally proposed dumping low-level radioactive waste in a small minority community in far-West Texas, putting him at odds with other progressive congressmen.

Though the waste never made it to Sierra Blanca, a low-income, largely Hispanic town in Hudspeth County, Sanders’ efforts have attracted renewed attention online in the leadup to Tuesday's Texas primary. Critics suggest that the candidate’s role in promoting the compact — which ultimately brought the waste to a different site in West Texas — undermines his otherwise progressive record.

“It reflects very poorly on him,” said longtime environmental justice activist Dr. Robert Bullard, dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University and the author of Dumping on Dixie. “Shoving this down people’s throats is not progressive politics. It was business as usual. It’s a classic case of rich people from a white state shifting something they don’t want to a poor minority community somewhere else.”

But other activists in the area have forgiven Sanders for his role in the proposal.
Bill Addington lives in Sierra Blanca and was a leading activist against the nuclear waste compact, creating a legal defense fund and even travelling to Vermont to directly protest Sanders. But now Addington says he is supporting Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary.

“Bernie made a big mistake, but this country has a lot bigger problems than what happened 20 years ago,” Addington said. “Not that that gives him a free pass, not that it makes him right, but we’ve moved on.”.........................

Minnesota caucuses brings Super Tuesday presidential energy to state
All top contenders but Donald Trump have visited.

By Patrick Condon Star Tribune

Jacquelyn Martin, Associated Press
Upon arriving in Rochester on Saturday night, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., spoke to members of the traveling media about his loss to Hillary Clinton in the South Carolina primary.

.............The four remaining top contenders from the two parties all have poured months of time and campaign resources into winning Minnesota’s March 1 caucuses. Thousands of party faithful are expected to pack voting sites on Tuesday night with Minnesota’s voting among the dozen caucuses and primaries nationally that make up this year’s pivotal Super Tuesday.

On the Democratic side, both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have made multiple Minnesota stops, amassed impressive volunteer forces and taken to the TV and radio airwaves as they battled to the last minute for support. Sanders has lavished the most personal attention on Minnesota of any candidate from either party, swinging through Hibbing on Friday and Rochester on Saturday evening as he tries to peel off a badly needed win over Clinton in a state his campaign views as friendly turf......................

................“Right now it’s just too tight to tell,” state DFL Party Chair Ken Martin said of Clinton vs. Sanders. In his view, Clinton has assembled a superior get-out-the-vote operation but Sanders has unleashed more “organic energy.” Martin expects good turnout, but doesn’t think it will exceed the 2008 record, when Clinton finished a distant second to Sen. Barack Obama.
.....................

Weekend campaigning

As a crowd awaited Sanders’ appearance at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, an organizer for the senator asked how many people signed for a “get out the caucus shift.” Only a smattering of hands went up.

“Not enough hands,” the woman said. “The reality is, it’s awesome you’re here, but if you really love Bernie ... we need you to sign up for these shifts.” She said it wasn’t enough to bring themselves and the person standing next to them out to caucus. “What matters is getting your whole neighborhood out to caucus.”

Besides Sanders’ stumping, Chelsea Clinton was due to campaign here for her mother along with a handful of other high-profile surrogates.....................

On Super Tuesday, Sanders will be competitive in MA, MN, CO, and OK. After his rout in SC, doesn't he NEED to win all 4?
