The national emergency debate went the same way the shutdown one did: Congressional Republican leaders struggled with Fox hosts for the president's attention, and eventually lost.

We warned you this would happen.

President Donald Trump is taking the advice of his Fox cabinet and will declare a national emergency to obtain additional funding for his border wall. The right-wing network’s hosts, several of whom also play key roles as unofficial presidential advisers, have been urging him to take this step for the last month.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced during a Thursday afternoon Senate floor speech that Trump intended to both sign the compromise legislation to fund the government -- which includes $1.375 billion in wall funding -- and use a national emergency to obtain more money. The White House subsequently confirmed that plan.

That’s exactly what Sean Hannity suggested that Trump do on the Fox host's Tuesday night program.
Hannity said that he was “not as concerned as some other conservatives if the president signs the bill,” as long as Trump “simultaneously” declared a national emergency. “This is the time. That is a necessity. And the president, I think I know him very well, telegraphed that very thing just today.”

Hannity, who has a close relationship with the president and frequently talks to him on the phone, had previously denounced the government funding bill and threatened any Republican legislator who supported it. But he changed his tune, perhaps because of a call he reportedly received from the White House aimed at “tamping down criticism on the right.” The result appears to be that Trump will be doing the very thing Hannity said on air he should do.

Hannity was one of several Fox hosts who had sharply criticized the spending bill for providing insufficient support for the president’s long-sought wall. The president will apparently ameliorate that concern by using the national emergency declaration to try to divert additional funding to wall construction.

This is the culmination of a month-long struggle between Senate Republican leaders like McConnell and Fox hosts like Hannity and Lou Dobbs.
Since Trump first floated the idea of a national emergency declaration in early January, McConnell and his allies have been trying to persuade the president not to go through with it, citing potential legal struggles and the possibility of a congressional resolution disapproving the declaration. Meanwhile, Hannity and Dobbs, whose Fox programs the president watches regularly and whom the president frequently consults for political advice, have been urging him to do it on a nearly nightly basis........................

Mitch McConnell Backs Down to Donald Trump, Agrees to Support National Emergency Declaration

Source: newsweek

By Ramsey Touchberry On 2/14/19 at 3:52 PM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Republican from Kentucky, said Thursday that President Donald Trump will sign the bipartisan border security spending bill needed to avert a government shutdown but will also declare a national emergency to supplement additional border wall funding.................

..........McConnell said he is prepared to support the emergency declaration, which flies in the face of his supposed private warning to Trump against taking such action, as reported by The Washington Post.

“I indicated to [Trump] I’m going to support the national emergency declaration,” McConnell said. “So, for all of my colleagues, the president will sign the bill.”

Republicans previously told Newsweek they did not support a national emergency declaration by the president and suggested they would consider overriding Trump’s decision under the National Emergencies Act of 1976, possibly leading to a rift within the party.........................

Years from now, we’ll note with regret that Trump and McConnell picked the one year anniversary of Parkland to announce they were declaring a national emergency and that national emergency didn’t have anything to do with gun violence.

Advocates describe traumatized migrant kids packed 'like sardines' at Florida prison camp

Source: dailyKos

Thursday February 14, 2019 · 1:41 PM CST

The Trump administration is portraying the prison camp for migrant children in Homestead, Florida, as an orderly “shelter” where kids can have talent shows and movie nights during the weekends, but advocates who visited the prison camp aren’t so convinced about the tidy image officials are trying to project.

Attorneys and experts who have permission to inspect children’s detention facilities as part of a years-old court agreement described cold rooms where kids are packed “like sardines” in rows of bunk beds. Some children they spoke to burst into tears, describing how they’re not allowed to hug one another. “Some of them have been there for months on end,” said Neha Desai of the National Center for Youth Law, “with no freedom of movement, no privacy, no human contact.”

In an effort that totally screams “we have nothing to hide,” reporters who also got to visit the Comprehensive Health Services-operated prison camp said that they were forbidden from speaking to the children. No photos were allowed. “Some said ‘hello,’ and a group of girls in pink sweatshirts offered a ‘good morning’ in English and Spanish,” the New York Times reported, “but others avoided eye contact.”

The prison camp currently jails nearly 1,600 children, but could soon expand to 2,350.........................

This is an American obscenity. Homestead became the largest prison camp for children following Tornillo’s closure, and like Tornillo, Homestead is operating without a license because it’s supposedly a “temporary” facility. Like Tornillo, it needs to be shut down. “Our taxpayer dollars are being used to traumatize children by keeping them in a child prison camp instead of in the arms of their families,” said Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley. “This is evil.”

The FBI is investigating a fire at a Missouri Planned Parenthood clinic as a potential hate crime

(CNN)The FBI is investigating a suspicious fire that occurred at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Columbia, Missouri, on Sunday as a potential hate crime.
Anyone who provides information about the incident could receive a $10,000 award, the FBI said.

Someone wearing dark clothing was captured on surveillance video walking onto Planned Parenthood's grounds at 4:05 a.m., the FBI said. A minute later, a fire alarm at the clinic was set off by a small blaze, Columbia Police said. The same person was later seen on video leaving the grounds as smoke spread from the building.

An assistant fire marshal determined that the fire was suspicious and alerted the police, Columbia Police said.

The FBI handles potential federal civil rights violations, which include breaches of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. The FACE Act makes it a crime for people to intentionally damage or interfere with a facility because it offers reproductive health services. The agency has opened a hate crime investigation, it said in a statement.

A Veterans Affairs Department official steered disabled veterans to questionable schools in exchange for bribes from school officials, according to the Justice Department.

James King, the VA official in question, on Tuesday pleaded guilty
to accepting about $160,000 in bribes. In return, law enforcement officials say, he directed participants in VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program to Atius Technology Institute and Eelon Training Academy, generating more than $2 million in VA revenue for the schools.

Both schools were the subject of repeated complaints from veterans, who said they provided a poor-quality education, and both misled the VA about their costs and program details.

Black mold, rodents, lead paint in privatized housing: No rent until it's fixed, military spouses s

Military spouses suggested to lawmakers one immediate way, for starters, to fix problems like mold, lead paint, termites, mice and other issues in privatized military housing: allow families to withhold rent payments until the issues are resolved.

Spouses testified before senators Wednesday, then watched as senators grilled company officials, and DoD and service officials, about the problems. All the officials admitted there have been breakdowns in the system, and assured senators they are making a commitment to address the systemic problems.

Robert McMahon, assistant secretary of defense for sustainment, told the senators that what he heard from the spouses “reinforced what we already know, that we collectively have to do significantly better."

McMahon said that working with DoD attorneys to look at possibly withholding rent payments to the companies “would be prudent, to ensure [privatization] partners respond rapidly.” The privatized housing rent payments are generally the service member’s Basic Allowance for Housing, paid by allotment.

Money speaks. Withhold the money until mold is taken care of. Plus, I would add--pay for motel until the problem is fixed.
