Cox is the speaker due to a one-seat GOP majority.

It has that majority because Rep. David Yancey won his seat in a coin toss.

It went to a coin toss because that race ended in a tie.

Congressional Democrats accused President Donald Trump of using Nixonian intimidation tactics during his State of the Union address when he denounced “ridiculous partisan investigations,” vowing to press on with their probes into the president’s administration, campaign and personal finances.

“Frankly, it reminded me of Richard Nixon’s last state of the union address to a joint session of Congress,” Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said after ducking out of the House chamber before Trump finished delivering his address. “It’s the same old same old coming from this White House and this president. So disappointing and inappropriate and, frankly, the worst of Richard Nixon.”

Connolly’s disgust — accentuated by his head-shaking as he left the chamber — came just moments after Trump took an implicit dig at House Democrats, who are launching wide-ranging investigations that could soon ensnare the president and his associates.

“An economic miracle is taking place in the United States — and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics, or ridiculous partisan investigations,” Trump said, prompting some boos from the Democratic side of the chamber. “If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. It just doesn't work that way.”

Democrats said they were stunned that Trump used the platform to push back on the various investigations.

Trump accuses Democrats of ‘ridiculous partisan investigations’ at State of the Union – video

Donald Trump issued sharp warnings to Democrats, including cautioning that “ridiculous partisan investigations” would harm economic progress, in comments that clashed with an appeal for unity during his first State of the Union address to a newly divided Congress.

“If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation,” Trump declared. The presence of Democrat House speaker Nancy Pelosi on the dais behind him was an acute reminder of the political challenges he will face in the next two years.

The remarks were an apparent reference to the investigation, led by special counsel Robert Mueller, into Russia meddling in the US election as well as Democrats’ promised oversight investigations into the president’s conduct and personal finances.

In wide-ranging remarks to a joint chamber of Congress on Tuesday night that lasted more than 80 minutes, Trump appealed to two areas of his base supporters by reasserting his vow to build a wall on the southern US border with Mexico, and urging lawmakers to ban late-term abortions.

Family patriarch Joe Ricketts, who has described himself at various times as a libertarian and a conservative, launched Ending Spending, his first Super PAC, in 2010 to challenge both Republican and Democratic incumbents. Joe’s 49-year-old son Todd Ricketts was at one time the PAC’s CEO and now serves as the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee. Another son, current Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts, has been tangentially involved when not otherwise distracted by his own state-level aspirations.

During the 2012 elections, Ending Spending was the subject of scandal when a 54-page proposal titled, “The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: the Ricketts Plan to End His spending for Good,” leaked to the New York Times: The plan, which sought to link Obama to comments made by his former spiritual advisor, Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, was considered at the time “one of the most provocative campaigns of the ‘super PAC’ era,” and referred to Obama as a “black metrosexual Abe Lincoln.” (The Ricketts family subsequently distanced themselves from the plan.)

In 2016, Joe Ricketts and his wife Marlene donated millions of dollars to Our Principles PAC, a group intending to “prevent Donald Trump from hijacking our great [Republican] party.” When Trump secured the Republican ticket, Ricketts made a “stunning” about-face, publicly endorsing the candidate and pledging at least $1 million to the future president’s efforts.....................................
