Lindsey Graham goes all-in on Trump talking points: ‘It’s better’ for kids to have a border wall than new schools

17 Feb 2019 at 11:12 ET

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) argued on Sunday that it is “better” for children in Kentucky to have a border wall than it is for them to have new schools.

During an interview on Face the Nation, host Margaret Brennan explained that $3.6 billion of the funds for President Donald Trump’s emergency declaration to build a border wall could come from military funds “including construction of a middle school in Kentucky.”

Graham, however, told Brennan that the children of Kentucky need a border wall more than they need new schools.
.............

“I would say it’s better for the middle school kids in Kentucky to have a secure border,” he continued. “We’ll get them the school they need, but right now, we’ve got a national emergency on our hands.”.............

Rep. Jim Jordan, the founder of the Freedom Caucus, joins ABC's 'This Week' to discuss his support for President Trump's declaration of a national emergency on the southern border.

REP. JIM JORDAN, (R) OHIO: This is an emergency. I mean, what are we on now? The fifth caravan? So, I would just ask those senators how many caravans do we need? Six or seven or does an endless caravan, the one that never stops?

What do we have just a few weeks ago, a drug bust that was enough Fentanyl to kill 57 million Americans. What do we need, 58 million, 59 million Americans, enough Fentanyl to kill that many? So, you tell me. I think it's an emergency.

What I also think is interesting is those Republicans who are criticizing the president for wanting to do this executive order are the same kind of Republicans who just a year ago didn't want us to debate and push for the wall funding when we had the majority in both the House and the Senate. Back after Chuck Schumer had shut down the government, because he said amnesty was more important than funding the government, and we had the big omnibus spending bill, that's when we should have done this. So I think it's kind of interesting, those same Republicans who were against fighting for it back then are the same ones who are criticizing the president now for his executive order.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last autumn after receiving a request from the U.S. government to do so, the Asahi newspaper reported on Sunday.

....................................

The Japanese leader had given him “the most beautiful copy” of a five-page nomination letter, Trump said at a White House news conference.

..............................

A spokesman for Japan’s Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said the ministry was aware of Trump’s remarks, but “would refrain from commenting on the interaction between the two leaders.”

The Nobel Foundation’s website says a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize may be submitted by any person who meets the nomination criteria, which includes current heads of states. Under the foundation’s rules, names and other information about unsuccessful nominations cannot be disclosed for 50 years.

Acting US defense secretary will review programs to cut for wall funding

Trump declares national emergency

CNN anchor shuts down commentator over Trump lie

(CNN)Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said, beginning Sunday, he will start studying which projects military money may come from to shift funds toward a border wall following President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration.

Trump on Friday declared a national emergency to secure federal funds to build a wall on the southern border, bypassing Congress after lawmakers refused to meet his multi-billion dollar request for border wall funds.

The administration has said $2.5 billion of military narcotics funding and $3.6 billion in military construction money will be diverted to the wall. But Shanahan will have final say on how much will be taken from which programs.

A military official said Shanahan is likely to approve the $3.6 billion figure.

"I think I have a lot of discretion," Shanahan told reporters on a flight from Munich to the US Saturday. "You can trust the numbers in terms of the potential. Then you gotta marry it up with where the money would be spent." .....................

If DHS could only learn to express the threat of caravans in terms of Categories, they might get people here in Florida more interested.... "This is Wolf Blitzer, in the eye of a Category 4 caravan here in Nogales..." See -- it's more worrisome, already....

The safest place to be during The Emergency is a golf course. That's why Donald went to one so quickly. One never sees a caravan of immigrants at the 7th tee, after all.

California’s move to Super Tuesday hands Harris a big edge in

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/16/kamala-harris-california-2020-strategy-1173320

‘Our strategy runs straight through California,’ says a top adviser. But a subpar performance in her home state could also sink Harris’ candidacy.

Kamala Harris is building a wall around California.

The Democratic senator has been activating her forces on the home front since launching her White House bid last month — cornering some of the state’s most prolific donors, locking down big endorsements and homing in on a statewide blueprint to rack up early delegates.

California’s Super Tuesday primary is foundational to Harris’ plans to win the nomination. Her home-state advantage is an enormous asset, holding the promise of a huge haul of delegates early in the nomination fight. At the same time, a poor performance there could end her bid.

Well aware there’s no guarantee of success, Harris and her team of longtime operatives there started working the state long before many of her 2020 Democratic rivals arrived for their first fundraisers and retail campaign stops.

Harris has already held seven fundraisers in the Golden State, lined up endorsements from Gov. Gavin Newsom plus dozens of state legislators and congressional members, and brought on a top delegate expert and senior strategist with deep ties to powerful organized labor groups in the state. Harris’ strength in her past campaigns of running up her vote counts in the bluest regions — such as the Bay Area congressional districts of Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee — could give the freshman senator a significant edge over her competitors.

“Our strategy runs straight through California, and we plan to aggressively defend our home state turf from donors to political leadership to superdelegates to organizations and their underlying memberships,” Sean Clegg, a senior strategist to Harris, told POLITICO. “We believe the early primary, early voting, and the cost of communicating will make it virtually impossible for all but the top two or three candidates to play in the state in a meaningful way.”...............................

The state’s March 3 primary — with mail ballots going out in February — means candidates won’t be able to rely solely on momentum from Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to carry them.

Darla Shine, the outspoken wife of White House communications director Bill Shine, has been tweeting about childhood diseases, claiming that illnesses such as measles, mumps and chickenpox “keep you healthy & fight cancer.” Health experts warn that the claim is not true and adds to misinformation that could cause harm.

Darla Shine, who has been known to tweet out stories with anti-vaccination claims, wrote Wednesday on Twitter that “The entire Baby Boom population alive today had the #Measles as kids."

She added: “I had the #Measles #Mumps #ChickenPox as a child and so did every kid I knew — Sadly my kids had #MMR so they will never have the life long natural immunity I have. Come breathe on me!”

Shine’s Twitter account has not been verified, but it notes that she is the wife of Bill Shine, “assistant to #POTUS.” The White House declined to comment about the tweets...........................................................
