Donald Trump is in India, attending an enormous rally to get the love and adulation he so craves…but he also made a fool of himself by mispronouncing many words.
The speech took place at a stadium filled to capacity with 110,000, and Trump acknowledged the spectacle when he addressed the Indian people.
“America loves India. America respects India. And America will always be faithful and loyal friends to the Indian people,” the president said to cheers.
“You have done a great honor to the American people. Melania, my family, we will always remember this remarkable hospitality,” he said.

Trump received the welcome he wanted when he touched down in India Monday morning – a spectacle of Indians lining the streets cheering on his motorcade, guards on camels standing by, and native dancers in bright costumes moving to live music and the beat of the drum.
Modi designed the day to appeal to an audience of one: Trump, wooing the president as the two nations struggle to end a trade war that has damped relations between them.

“However, he struggled to pronounce several Indian words – from Ahmedabad, the city where he was speaking, to Swami Vivekananda, an Indian philosopher, greatly admired by Mr Modi. He also called the Vedas – ancient Hindu texts – “Vestas”.”
BBC’s Rajini Vaidyanathan reported that crowds began leaving midway through Trump’s speech, which came after Modi spoke.

Before appearing at the rally, Trump made a stop at the Sabarmati Ashram, the humble home where Mahatma Gandhi lived for a dozen years as he helped push India to gain independence from Britain. At one point, Modi could be seen explaining to Trump how to use a charkha, a traditional spinning wheel used by Gandhi..............................

White House to request emergency coronavirus funds

The White House is preparing to ask Congress for emergency funding to fight the coronavirus, a spokesman said Monday, but declined to say how much would be requested.
"We need some funding here to make sure that we protect all Americans,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Fox News.

Democrats have been calling for the Trump administration to request additional funds, but officials had previously said they could shift money from other programs. As the virus spreads to more countries, the administration is now shifting to ask for funds.

Adriane Casalotti, an official at the National Association of County and City Health Officials, said $1 billion would not be enough.
“By any measure, that would not be enough for a government-wide supplemental to make a meaningful impact,” Casalotti said. “Vaccine development alone needs way more than that.”..........................................

America’s former ambassador to Russia explained why information on Vladimir Putin meddling in the 2020 presidential election should be declassified before voters go to the polls — and suggested that House Democrats should consider holding weekly hearings on the threat with acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell.
Ambassador Michael McFaul was interviewed on Friday by Nicolle Wallace on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House.
“It is an intelligence assessment that Putin seeks Trump’s victory again,” McFaul said. “To me, that’s no great insight.
McFaul said, “let’s start declassifying this stuff” before the 2020 election “so the American people know what’s going on.”

Trump erroneously believed that Pierson had given the assessment exclusively to Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, people familiar with the matter said. Trump also believed that the information would be helpful to Democrats if it were released publicly, the people said. Schiff was the lead impeachment manager, or prosecutor, during Trump’s Senate trial on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Trump learned about Pierson’s remarks from Rep. Devin Nunes (Calif.), the committee’s ranking Republican and a staunch Trump ally, said one person familiar with the matter. Trump’s suspicions of the intelligence community have often been fueled by Nunes, who was with the president in California on Wednesday when he announced on Twitter that Grenell would become the acting director, officials said.

Donald Trump held a “Keep American Great” campaign rally in Las Vegas on Friday on the eve of Nevada’s hotly anticipated Democratic caucuses – the latest event in an emerging pattern that suggests one of the Trump campaign’s reelection strategies during the primary season.
The rally follows similar events in Iowa and New Hampshire on the day before Democratic nominating contests in those early-voting states. The president has used the events to stoke his base and tout his achievements while criticizing individual Democratic candidates and undermining faith in the process and the party as a whole.
He is also scheduled to hold a rally in South Carolina on the night before the state’s primaries, and another in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the eve of Super Tuesday, when voters in 14 states will head to the polls.
During Friday’s Las Vegas event, Trump once again cast doubt on the integrity of the Democrats’ elections, harping on the Iowa caucuses, in which technology issues resulted in a days-long delay in the reporting of results.

German politicians are calling for U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell to be recalled, following a controversial interview in which the diplomat claims he is seeking to boost anti-establishment parties across Europe.
"What this man is doing is unprecedented in international diplomacy," former Social Democrat leader Martin Schulz told German daily Tagesschau on Tuesday.
"If a German ambassador in Washington said, 'I'm here to strengthen the Democratic Party,' he would be thrown out immediately," he added.
Schulz accused Grenell of acting as a representative of a political movement instead of maintaining a neutral stance toward his host country, and on Monday described him as a "far-right colonial official."
In an interview published late Sunday, Grenell told far-right news site Breitbart he "absolutely wants to empower other conservatives throughout Europe" and encourage people to rise up against "elites.".........................................

BERLIN — The murderous rampage by a suspected right-wing extremist near Frankfurt is forcing German leaders to confront an uncomfortable question: Why does it keep happening?
The killing of nine people, almost all of Turkish descent, in two bars in the small city of Hanau, is the latest in a series of murderous attacks in recent months that have renewed fears of a resurgent right-wing subculture in Germany with the wherewithal and will to act.
In October, an alleged right-wing extremist tried to storm a synagogue in the eastern city of Halle, where about 50 Jews were celebrating Yom Kippur. A locked door saved them, but the attacker killed two other people before being arrested.
In June, Walter Lübcke, a local official with Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats, who was a champion of refugee rights, was gunned down at his home. A suspected neo-Nazi has been charged in the case...........................................

For months, a loose network of pro-Trump commentators and outside agitators has been urging the president to purge his administration of anyone and everyone involved in the Russia probe.
They’ve celebrated as many of the FBI and Justice Department officials involved in the investigation have left government. And now, with an angry and newly liberated President Donald Trump seeking retribution in the wake of his impeachment acquittal, they’re pressing him to finish the job.
“Why would they expect not to be fired?” said Kurt Schlicter, a conservative political commentator and Trump supporter, referring to the roughly half-dozen prosecutors and officials who worked in special counsel Robert Mueller’s office and are still employed by the Justice Department.
Trump’s allies have long called for a “cleaning out” of DOJ and FBI, aimed at career officials perceived as hostile to the president. Several of Trump’s top targets have been forced out, including former FBI Director James Comey, his former deputy Andrew McCabe, and former FBI agent Peter Strzok, all of whom worked on the Russia probe.
But the calls for a purge intensified this month after four career prosecutors recommended a sentence of at least 7 years in prison for Trump associate Roger Stone, who was convicted last year of making false statements to Congress, obstruction and witness intimidation.
All four of the Stone prosecutors quit the case after their sentencing recommendation, which followed federal guidelines, was overruled by Attorney General Bill Barr, and one resigned from DOJ altogether...........................................

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday condemned President Donald Trump's reported actions over an intelligence briefing given to lawmakers on Russian interference in U.S. elections, saying members should denounce any efforts to discredit the intelligence community.
"American voters should decide American elections — not Vladimir Putin. All Members of Congress should condemn the president’s reported efforts to dismiss threats to the integrity of our democracy & to politicize our intel community," Pelosi tweeted Thursday night.
Her remarks came after The New York Times reported that the House Intelligence Committee received a Feb. 13 briefing that Russia planned to interfere in the 2020 elections, including the Democratic primaries, and favored Trump.
The report said Trump expressed anger toward acting director of national intelligence Joseph Maguire for greenlighting the briefing, suggesting Democrats would use the information against him as he seeks reelection. ............................
..............Trump was also reportedly angry that House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff was in the intelligence briefing. Schiff was one the Democrat impeachment managers during Trump's Senate impeachment trial and a frequent punching bag at Trump's rallies....................................
