Hillary Clinton goes after Scott Walker in new Wisconsin ad

JESSIE OPOIEN | The Capital Times | jopoien@madison.com | @jessieopie 19 min ago

Hillary Clinton goes after Gov. Scott Walker's education record in one of two ads set to start airing throughout Wisconsin this week.

"Wisconsin schools face the biggest cuts in history — because of Scott Walker. Hillary Clinton’s got different priorities for this country," a narrator says in the ad. "Education means a good job, a decent living. So here’s what she’ll do: pre-school for every child, invest in great teachers, and college without crushing debt."

The education ad will air in the Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, La Crosse/Eau Claire and Wausau media markets starting Thursday, according to the Clinton campaign.

...............

"She’ll never let anyone privatize Social Security and Medicare, or shut down Planned Parenthood. She’ll take on the gun lobby, finally get equal pay for women, and stop the Republicans from ripping all our progress away," the narrator says. ......................

I think the 1st ad will also help Russ Feigold. He is neck to neck with teabagger Sen. Ron Johnson

..............While supporters waited in the standing-room-only fourth-floor space, Clinton began her visit to Western with a tour of the computer numerical control machining program on the first floor. Students told her about what they were learning and about the kinds of jobs they hope to get.

One student spoke about becoming tool and die makers or machinists after finishing the program. Western President Lee Rasch spoke about high-paying job opportunities and the need for skilled labor that business and community partners report.

Clinton asked about the cost of the program. About $3,800 for tuition, plus books and tools, Rasch replied. Clinton asked about the impact of scholarships and financial aid, promising she would increase access to the federal Pell Grant program.

“I’m gonna change that,” she said, after hearing that some students have difficulty getting financial aid. “It’s really counterproductive and discourages a lot of people from getting these skills.”....................

.....After blitzing the state over two days, Clinton is headed to New York Wednesday to open her campaign for the delegate-rich state's April 19 primary. New York appears to be a must-win for Clinton, the state's former U.S. senator. Wisconsin is widely viewed to be a Sanders-friendly state.

Sanders has events scheduled Wednesday in Kenosha, Madison and Onalaska before heading to New York for a planned rally Thursday.

Neither campaign has announced future events in Wisconsin and neither candidate has yet confirmed they'll attend Saturday night's Democratic Party dinner in Milwaukee...............

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called on La Crosse County voters to support her plan to rebuild the middle class through education, promoting a green energy economy and expanding access to health care.
...........

“We have to restore the potential of America’s dream for everybody,” she said. “I don’t want Americans giving up on themselves.”

Clinton spoke ....in an unfinished wing on the fourth floor of Western Technical College’s new Integrated Technologies Center, where she outlined her plan to provide debt-free college education for middle- and working-class families, which she said she would pay for by taxing “wealthy people, while also working to reduce existing college debt.

The former secretary of state panned her Democratic rival Sen. Bernie Sander’s free tuition plan, which she said relies on cooperation from governors like Wisconsin’s Scott Walker.

“That seems like a big leap of faith to me,” Clinton said.

Clinton promised to create jobs rebuilding the country’s roads, bridges and water systems while also promoting renewable energy.

She also called for raising the minimum wage (she supports a $12-per-hour federal minimum, while Sanders has called for $15).

She vowed to expand Obamacare, and to protect access to abortion, marriage equality and voters’ rights, drawing cheers from the crowd with each.

Clinton, who earlier in the day held a forum on gun violence in Milwaukee, also promised to take on gun manufacturers in a push for better background checks.

State Sen. Jennifer Shilling said Clinton has “laid out a comprehensive agenda designed to help everyone succeed.”

“There’s a lot at stake in this election,” the Senate minority leader said in her introduction. “We know here in Wisconsin what five years of Republican control looks like.”

While mentioning Sanders, Clinton focused her criticism on Republicans, whom she blamed for the Great Recession....................

Supporters said they admire Clinton’s grit and energy.

“I like her enthusiasm and I like her appeal and drive for middle class people,” Terrance Gillard said. “Her experience is awesome.”

Cindy Salas said Clinton “has something to offer everyone” and noted “it’s time for a woman” in the White House.

“She represents humanity to me,” said Beth Hautala of Elroy, Wis.

Hautala said she admires Clinton’s tenacity as well as her compassion and pragmatism.

“We can’t afford what Bernie’s proposing,” she said of Sanders................
