Sheriff David Clarkes Inmates Are Dying But Trump Reportedly Has a Job for Him Anyway

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, a thin-skinned conservative provocateur who likes to dress up as a cowboy, is close to landing a job in the Trump administration, Politico reports. The controversial lawman is in line for an appointment to serve as assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Partnership and Engagement.

In that role, Clarke would serve as DHS’s liaison between state and local police forces, and while the prospect of him working for the federal government will make some want to puke, at least it would mean he’s no longer in charge of a jail where four people died last year.

Among those to lose their lives in the Milwaukee County jail since last April were a newborn baby and Terrill Thomas, who died of “profound dehydration.” Earlier this week prosecutors began an inquest into Thomas’s April 2016 death. After two days in the jail’s special-needs unit, the 38-year-old, who suffered from bipolar disorder, was placed in solitary confinement. Jail employees turned off the water to his cell when he arrived.

.........................

Clarke, who spoke at the RNC last summer, is an exuberant Trump supporter who first rose to prominence thanks to Fox News. The network used him, wrote Representative Gwen Moore, the congresswoman from Clarke’s district, because it needed “a black sheriff to give voice to the dog-whistle narratives its anchors dare not vocalize themselves.”....................

A new era in American politics. And a new challenge for citizens and journalists.

Donald Trump, Jan. 21

Trump bragged to the CIA that he had been on the cover of Time magazine "15 times this year," calling it "the all-time record in the history" of the magazine.

This is false.

Trump has made it to the cover of Time magazine 11 times in total. Richard Nixon holds the record at 55.

During a press conference with the NATO secretary, Trump said, "The secretary general and I had a productive conversation about what more NATO can do in the fight against terrorism," Trump said. "I complained about that a long time ago, and they made a change. Now they do fight terrorism. I said it was obsolete. It's no longer obsolete."

This is false on two counts.
First, NATO has been involved in counterterrorism efforts since the 1980s. And second, Trump was not responsible for it making a change, which likely referred to the creation of an assistant secretary general for intelligence and security position at NATO.

White House Weighs Kicking Out Sebastian Gorka

Source: Huff post

The president admires Sebastian Gorka for his fiery TV performances, but his ties to far-right organizations are making him more liability than asset, administration sources say.

04.28.17 3:40 PM ET

The Trump administration is actively exploring options to remove controversial national security aide Sebastian Gorka from the White House and place him at another federal agency, multiple sources tell The Daily Beast.

Two senior administration officials familiar with the situation say it is exploring a new role for Gorka elsewhere in the administration. Another said he has been entirely excluded from day-to-day policy-making at the National Security Council in the meantime.

Gorka’s looming departure from the White House, which one of the sources described as imminent, comes amid mounting controversy over his involvement with a far-right Hungarian group notorious for its collaboration with the Nazi regime during the second world war.
............................

According to two senior administration officials, the White House has been seeking a position for Gorka that does not require a security clearance. One said it was looking to classify him as a member of the federal government’s senior executive service.....................

Per the article, Gorka has no security clearance as of last month. Yet, he is roaming around the WH with no duties.

Trump exposes the myth of ‘running government like a business’

President Trump. (Reuters/Carlos Barria)

Marisa Meyer’s tenure as chief executive of Yahoo has not gone well. Ad revenue has dwindled. High-profile acquisitions have failed. Users’ personal info was breached — twice. Now, Verizon is set to acquire Yahoo for a fraction of its worth a decade ago. And in a few months, Meyer faces her punishment, as dictated by the free market: walking away with $186 million. Reports the New York Times: “All told, her time at Yahoo will have netted her well over $200 million.”

“Government should be run like a business,” goes the quasi-proverb. In years past, Meyer’s golden parachute would be this month’s best evidence of why that supposed maxim makes little sense. But now that proof sits in the Oval Office. As Donald Trump’s presidency reaches 100 days, we are seeing firsthand the results of a government run like a business, and the results are not pretty.

From early in Trump’s business career, there has been a consistent verdict: The 45th president is driven by impulse and the short term. Tony Schwartz, the ghostwriter of “The Art of the Deal,” won Trump’s admiration with a 1985 article that described him (in the New Yorker’s words) as a “ham-fisted thug.” Whether it be Trump Steaks, Trump Vodka or numerous other failures, Trump has consistently bought into ventures brought to him because of the exposure in the short term, regardless of the viability in the long term.

Now that approach has been brought to the White House. As The Post reported Thursday, the president “often seems more interested in short-term accomplishments — and positive cable news headlines — than longer-term policy goals.” This explains why Trump has been so uncompromising on executive orders — where he does not have to deal with anyone else — and so yielding on legislative and diplomatic negotiations. Just this month, he has caved to Democrats on health care, China on currency manipulation, and Canada and Mexico on the North American Free Trade Agreement. What’s important is not the long-term policy outcome but the near-term impression of success.

Many will want to ascribe this short-term, impulsive thinking to Trump alone. The truth, however, is that corporate America rewards this approach.
We see this in the “stock price first” approach of big corporations, which values higher prices and bigger dividends over investment in the company’s future. In the long run, that hurts Americans as a whole, as investment in infrastructure, innovation and other improvements is lost.

Nations only federally funded voucher program has negative effect on student achievement, study f

Source: WashPost

Students in the nation’s only federally funded school voucher initiative performed worse on standardized tests within a year after entering D.C. private schools than peers who did not participate, according to a new federal analysis that comes as President Trump is seeking to pour billions of dollars into expanding the private school scholarships nationwide.

The study, released Thursday by the Education Department’s research division, follows several other recent studies of state-funded vouchers in Louisiana, Indiana and Ohio that suggested negative effects on student achievement. Critics are seizing on this data as they try to counter Trump’s push to direct public dollars to private schools.

Vouchers, deeply controversial among supporters of public education, are direct government subsidies parents can use as scholarships for private schools. These payments can cover all or part of the annual tuition bills, depending on the school.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has long argued that vouchers help poor children escape from failing public schools. But Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.), the top Democrat on the Senate Education Committee, said that DeVos should heed the department’s Institute of Education Sciences. Given the new findings, Murray said, “it’s time for her to finally abandon her reckless plans to privatize public schools across the country.”......................
