CA synagoque shooter claims responsibility for last month's fire at a mosque in nearby Escondido, CA

The heavens were with these folks in the synagogue in that a large number were not shot (given it was a AR-15 used)

In the manifesto *allegedly* posted by the California synagogue shooter, he claims responsibility for last month's fire at a mosque in nearby Escondido, CA. He also says he began planning for the shooting after the New Zealand mosque attacks.

There’s a clear trend of shooters using these weapons of war to attack public spaces and yet the GOP turns a blind eye.

A New Obstruction Case Against a Judge Proves William Barr’s DOJ Is Now Just an Arm of President Donald Trump

It took Attorney General William Barr only one week from the release of the Mueller report to bring obstruction of justice charges against two governmental officials for interfering in a federal investigation.
But the charges have nothing to do with the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the election or the possible obstruction of that investigation.

Although the obstruction charges DOJ filed are not related to the Mueller report, they underscore just how far the attorney general bent over backward to spin the report in the president’s favor and how partisan the Department of Justice has become. The disparities between the two cases highlight how the Department of Justice, under Barr’s leadership, has become nothing more than a political arm of the Trump administration, particularly in its handling of possible obstruction charges stemming from the Mueller report.

The indictment against Judge Shelley Richmond Joseph, a Massachusetts district court judge, and Officer Wesley MacGregor, a Massachusetts trial court officer, alleges that the officers interfered with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement proceeding by preventing ICE from arresting an individual who was arrested on state charges and attended an arraignment hearing in state court. During the state court proceeding, Joseph asked an ICE officer to wait outside the courtroom while the court conducted the arraignment hearing. Earlier in the day, the judge had requested more information about one of the state charges in the case (a fugitive charge) after the prosecutor said the state would not seek to detain the defendant on the other charge (a drug charge).

After recalling the case, the judge observed that ICE was in the courthouse. The prosecutor then informed the court that the state did not believe the defendant was the fugitive from Pennsylvania for whom there was an arrest warrant and therefore believed that the fugitive charge was an error, which would mean that the defendant would be free to leave. The defense attorney, however, noted that ICE was convinced otherwise and suggested they would likely take the client into custody. The defense attorney then suggested that “the best thing for us to do is to … release him … and hope that he can avoid ICE.”

At that point, the judge noted the other alternative was to recall the proceedings again the next day and asked “ICE is gonna get him?” before directing the clerk to go off the record. The recording was turned off for 52 seconds, and when it resumed, the prosecutor renewed the claim that the defendant was not the person with a Pennsylvania warrant out for his arrest and moved to dismiss the fugitive charge against him. Because the state had already stated it would not seek to detain the defendant on the drug charges, the defendant was released, and the trial court officer escorted him through the back door.

Abortion will be legal in Kansas even if Roe v. Wade falls, the state Supreme Court just ruled

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the state's constitution protects a women's right to abortion, a surprisingly pro-choice decision for the traditionally conservative state.

Thanks to the decision, even if Roe v. Wade were overturned, abortion would remain legal in Kansas, according to Geniveve Scott, the lead counsel on the lawsuit and a senior staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Health. The decision will also make it much more difficult for the state to pass regulations restricting the procedure, like admitting privilege requirements and mandatory waiting periods, Scott said in a telephone interview with CBS News on Friday.

"This is an incredible decision that really defines what the legal standard now is in Kansas," Scott said in a telephone interview with CBS News on Friday. "It's extremely exciting."

Because the decision was made in the state's highest court, there is no path for appeal, she said.

"The recognition of inalienable natural rights in section 1 of the Kansas Constitution Bill of Rights is intended for all Kansans, including pregnant women," the court's decision reads.

Because the judges found that abortion was a part of a woman's "personal autonomy" protected by the state constitution, any regulations proposed by Kansas politicians that restrict access to abortion will now be held to "strict scrutiny," according to the nearly 200-page legal decision...............................

John Gore, the principal deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, will defy a congressional subpoena to appear before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday without counsel present, the department said Wednesday. Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings called Gore to answer questions about his role in the Trump administration's efforts to add a question on citizenship to the 2020 census.

"In keeping with longstanding Department of Justice policy, neither Mr. Gore nor anyone else in the Department will be forced to testify in their capacity as a DOJ official on DOJ matters without DOJ counsel," said Kerri Kupec, a spokesperson for the Justice Department. A Justice Department official also said Gore had the "unqualified support" of Attorney General Bill Barr on the matter.

Gore appeared before the committee in March, with Justice Department counsel present. The attorney told Gore to not answer certain questions that applied to "confidential executive branch deliberations," according to an April 9 letter by Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd. The committee then issued a subpoena to have Gore respond to the unanswered questions.

The committee responded by saying counsel could be present in a separate room, but Boyd insisted in a letter on Wednesday that counsel be present in the same room as Gore and said he would not appear for the deposition on Thursday.

If Gore does not appear, he could be held in contempt. In a statement, Cummings argued that Gore and the Justice Department had not claimed "any legally valid privilege."

Democrats are investigating the circumstances surrounding the administration's decision to include a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. They argue that adding the question would deter undocumented immigrants from participating, which could lead to an undercount of population in states with high immigrant populations. This could in turn affect a state's representation in Congress.

However, the conservative majority of the Supreme Court, which is currently considering the legality of the question, seemed to side with the administration during oral arguments on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Facebook admits it ran hundreds of Trump campaign ads that violate Facebook rules

Facebook took them offline about 12 hours after Popular Information's report

Melania Trump’s birthday is April 26. For weeks, the Trump campaign has used the First Lady’s big day — she’ll be 49 — to build their email list. They’ve run thousands of ads urging Facebook users to sign a “card to wish Melania a Happy Birthday!”

But today the Trump campaign is doing something different. It has produced hundreds of ads targeting women in practically every city in Texas.

These ads, accessible through the Facebook political ad library, go on and on and on. The campaign appears to be leaning on Melania to bolster Trump’s low support with women. Focusing on Texas, which some Democrats believe is the next swing state, is also an interesting choice.

But these ads also explicitly violate Facebook’s ad guidelines because they include “prohibited content.” Facebook’s rules prohibit ads that reference the “personal attributes” of the people being targeted.

Gov. Matt Bevin: Kentucky teacher sickouts caused a 7-year-old to be shot

Source: courier-journal

Updated 5:37 a.m. ET April 26, 2019

Republican Gov. Matt Bevin reopened political wounds with Kentucky teachers on Thursday when he blamed their sickouts for the shooting of a 7-year-old.

........................................................

"One thing you almost didn't hear anything about while we had people pretending to be sick when they weren't sick and leaving kids unattended to or in situations that they should not have been in — a little girl was shot, 7 years old, by another kid," he said.

"Because they were somewhere that they weren't intended and because a parent didn't have any option, put them in a situation so that they could go to work, it left these kids in a compromised situation where they encountered a gun and there was not enough awareness."

After the meeting, Bevin chastised reporters for writing about his comments related to the child's shooting.

"The only thing you all are pumping out there is talking this 7-year-old girl who was shot — really? That's pretty sad," said Bevin, who is seeking reelection. "And it's why our state is struggling because we're not focusing on things that are important."

GOP Governor: Child Shooting is Teachers’ Fault
BY Steph Bazzle April 25, 2019

GOP Governor Matt Bevin of Kentucky reportedly said that teachers are to blame for a child dying from a gunshot wound. The shooter was reportedly the girl’s 11-year-old brother, and this occurred while the two were inside their home and the adult responsible for their care was outside. Contrary to the Governor’s claim, the child was not killed, and was said to be in stable condition and able to eat shortly after the initial report.

Many Americans found themselves shocked at the rise in their tax rate during April of 2018. One group paying much higher rates were Gold Star families who collect survivor benefits. Since these families, in many cases, had lost their main breadwinner, this created a tremendous financial hardship.

Jessica Braden-Rogers, who’s husband Michael was killed in the Middle East, wanted to speak to the Trump administration about her concerns. When she called the White House, however, she says that she was hung up on.

Braden-Rogers appeared on Don Lemon’s CNN show on Wednesday night to tell her story. She explained, “None of us found out until we were filing our taxes.”

The Gold Star widow has been completely unable to get any answers from her congressperson or the White House. “I was hung up on by them,” Braden-Rogers said. “And I have received no responses. And so have many of the military widows that I’ve spoken to.”.....................
