‘Downright deadly’: Pelosi rips Trump rule allowing providers to deny care to LGBTQ, women
The Trump administration expanded moral and religious protections for health care workers who deny medical care

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that expanded permissions for health care providers to deny care based on religious or moral objections could be “downright deadly” for women and LGBTQ people.

Pelosi said the new rule grants “an open license to discriminate against Americans who already face serious, systemic discrimination” in a statement Thursday night.

A final “conscience” rule unveiled by the Trump administration Thursday would expand the scope of moral and religious protections for workers and health care institutions that refuse medical services, such as abortion or reproductive health care to transgender people.

The regulation also grants the administration a more powerful toolbox to investigate non-compliance with the rule, refer cases to the U.S. Department of Justice and cut off federal spending to providers. President Donald Trump announced the regulation at a Rose Garden speech on Thursday in a ceremony timed to coincide with the National Day of Prayer.

“The final rule fulfills President Trump’s promise to promote and protect the fundamental and unalienable rights of conscience and religious liberty,” the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.
................................................................

“Since Day One, this Administration has waged a cruel campaign of intolerance and discrimination targeting the civil rights of our most vulnerable communities. House Democrats fully, flatly reject these attacks on LGBTQ Americans and on the rights of all Americans to get the health care they need and will fight these hateful actions,” Pelosi said.

I consider Judge Napolitano to be a friend so I write this with regret. An obstruction case where there is no proof of an underlying crime is questionable. If you add to it nothing actually obstructed, there’s no case. Judge reconsider your position. This is a Weismann.

Incorrect. Obstruction of justice even applies to efforts to interfere with civil litigation. See U.S. v. Lundwall. Also, corrupt attempts to obstruct a proceeding even when one isn’t the subject, is a crime. Mueller’s grand jury indicted many people.

There’s a section of the DOJ manual that nicely captures what obstruction of justice is about. It’s got nothing to do with whether there’s an underlying offense. It’s all about whether someone is trying to wrongly influence a participant in federal proceeding, ...

There doesn’t have to be an underlying offense; the proceeding can be about trying to figure out whether there was an underlying offense. This isn’t hard.

But again, let’s remember: Whether the President of United States is provably a criminal (which, sadly, he is) is actually a red herring. Our standards should be—must be—higher than that. That’s why the Framers of our Constitution provided for impeachment.

Either way, it's the "ask" that's illegal.

If I tell you to take a hike and not testify against me, go out of town that week, and instead you tell the prosecutors, you'll guilty of obstruction even though my director was not acted upon.

Harris urges DOJ watchdog to probe whether Trump asked Barr to investigate 'enemies'

Sen. Kamala Harris called on the Justice Department inspector general to look into whether Attorney General William Barr had received or complied with any requests from the White House to investigate President Donald Trump’s “perceived enemies.”

In a letter sent Friday to Inspector General Michael Horowitz, the California Democrat, who is also running for president, wrote she had “grave concern about the independence of the Department of Justice under the leadership of Attorney General William Barr.”

Harris cited her exchange with the attorney general at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing earlier this week, in which Barr did not explicitly answer her question about whether Trump or anyone in he White House asked to or suggested the DOJ investigate someone.

“I’m trying to grapple with the word ‘suggest,’” Barr said at the hearing. “I mean there have been discussions of, of matters out there that uh ... they have not asked me to open an investigation.”

When Harris asked whether the White House had hinted at an investigation, Barr responded: “I don’t know.”...........................

The Trump administration has been trying for months to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power. So far, they’ve failed miserably.

In January, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared himself the country’s rightful president. He argued that Maduro, who has been in power for six years, rigged the election last May that kept him in charge — and that as a result, Guaidó, as the head of the National Assembly, is now the rightful interim president of the country according to the Venezuelan constitution.

The United States immediately backed his claim, and has been working ever since to help him push Maduro out once and for all. They’ve sanctioned politicians and businesses, sent much-needed food and medical aid, and helped sustain a global campaign to back Guaidó and boost his popularity...............................

Federal judge rules that legal challenge to Trump travel ban can proceed

Source: thehill

By Rachel Frazin - 05/03/19 06:19 PM EDT

A federal judge ruled Thursday that a revised legal challenge to President Trump's travel ban can proceed.

The ruling was made by U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang in Maryland after the three consolidated cases were brought by American Muslims who have been separated from family members who are citizens of countries named in the ban.

Chuang's decision will allow plaintiffs to request evidence from the government about how the travel ban was originated and how it is being enforced, according to BuzzFeed.

Chuang, who was appointed by former President Obama, wrote in a 46-page decision that he saw enough evidence to show Trump's ban may not be related to legitimate national security matters........................

Trump's Campaign Manager: Trump is 'a Savior' Delivered by 'God'

Source: hillreporter.com

BY Todd Neikirk May 3, 2019

.............................

The event was a successful one with an estimated crowd of around 10,000. The president’s campaign manager, Brad Parscale, took to Twitter to describe Trump’s Green Bay rally in messianic terms.

Parscale wrote: “Loved watching the crowd fill up for the 547th Rally in Green Bay. There has never been and probably never will be a movement like this again. Only God could deliver such a savior to our nation and only God could allow me to help. God bless America!”

The campaign head is not the only Trump surrogate to describe Trump in religious terms. Earlier this year, Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said, “I think God calls all of us to fill different roles at different times and I think that he wanted Donald Trump to become president, and that’s why he’s there. I think he has done a tremendous job in supporting a lot of the things that people of faith really care about.”

Parscale was also in the news this week due to a paid speech that he gave in Romania. The April speech has created ethical concerns. According to CNN, “Delivering paid speeches, whether domestic or abroad, is not illegal but is highly unusual for presidential campaign managers.”........................

It is amazing to me that it this high!

Trump is struggling despite a strong economy. Here's why.

Updated 1:10 PM ET, Fri May 3, 2019

(CNN)We learned Friday that the unemployment rate is now at its lowest rate since 1969 at 3.6%. The economy added another 263,000 jobs. This capped a week in which President Donald Trump received his highest economic approval rating in any CNN poll at 56%.
In other words, the economy is going well, and people think it's going well.

Yet for all that strength, Trump's overall approval rating seems mostly stuck. Recently, he hasn't been able to get his overall approval rating above 43% with voters. Trump's net approval rating (approval - disapproval) hasn't been positive in over two years.
So why is the President struggling, despite a strong economy?

1.The economy may not matter like it used to

One of the more interesting trends of the Trump presidency is how little changes in his economic approval rating have correlated with changes in his overall approval rating. That's also seen in consumer sentiment. When consumer sentiment has been higher, it has not resulted in higher approval ratings for the President.

The funny thing is the same thing happened under President Barack Obama. According to political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler and Lynn Vavreck, changes in consumer sentiment also failed to predict changes in Obama's approval rating. In fact, if anything, Obama's approval rating was lower when consumer sentiment was higher.

This is a complete reversal of the trend dating back to the John Kennedy administration. From Kennedy to George W. Bush, you could count on consumer sentiment changes to drive changes in overall approval ratings. Not surprisingly, therefore, the perceptions of a good economy lifted Ronald Reagan to re-election in 1984 and sunk George H.W. Bush in 1992.

Perhaps the trend will reverse itself over the next year and a half, but it may be the case that the economy just doesn't matter that much anymore when it comes to approval ratings.

2. Voters don't feel Trump is on their side
It's one thing to think the economy is working. It's another thing to believe the economy and the head of the government is working on behalf of you. Americans don't believe that Trump cares about the average American. The percentage who do has hovered around 40%, which is right around where Trump's approval rating has been. That's about the same percentage of voters who believe the administration has done enough to help the middle class.
Indeed, changes in the percentage of Americans who think Trump cares about the average American have been correlated with changes in the his overall approval rating. ........................
