Direct payments to farmers make up $14.5 billion of the total the Trump administration is offering. The funds are part of the administration's attempt to lessen the impact of the ongoing trade war with China. President Donald Trump has said he'll raise tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods, and the Chinese government has promised to respond in kind.

Grassley, a Republican from New Hartford, also applied for federal money in October during the first round of federal farm bailouts, which totaled $12 billion. Zona did not answer a question about how much money Grassley received from that round of payments.

Zona said in a statement that Grassley participates in farm programs for which he is legally eligible and "receives no special treatment."

"As a family farmer who experiences the same processes with the federal government after downturns like other farmers in Iowa, Sen. Grassley brings firsthand knowledge and experience on behalf of agriculture and rural America to the policy-making tables in Washington," Zona said.

...............................

The money is slated to be sent to farmers in three installments, with the first check sent as soon as July. The last check could come early next year, depending on whether the U.S. has an agreement with China.

GOP senator applies for farm aid, but maintains support for Trump’s trade war with China

Sen. Chuck Grassley owns a farm in his home state of Iowa, and like many of the farmers he represents, plans to apply for tariff relief.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, will apply for financial assistance offered by the Trump administration as part of the latest bailout package for farmers hurt by the White House’s ongoing tariff war with China.

Grassley’s spokesperson, Michael Zona, told The Des Moines Register’s Stephen Gruber-Miller that the senator “receives no special treatment,” and that he is merely participating in programs for which he is legally eligible.

“As a family farmer who experiences the same processes with the federal government after downturns like other farmers in Iowa, Sen. Grassley brings firsthand knowledge and experience on behalf of agriculture and rural America to the policymaking tables in Washington,” Zona said.

Grassley co-owns a 750 acre farm with this son, on which the men grow corn and soybeans. When he previously applied for the first round of tariff aid programs in October, Grassley indicated that would split the money with his son.

Wall St. loses early gains as trade concerns abound

Source: Reuters

May 28, 2019 / 6:22 AM / Updated an hour ago

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with initial gains giving way to declines as the likelihood of a prolonged trade war between the United States and China once again kept risk appetite in check.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said he was “not yet ready” to make a deal with China, although he expected one could be reached in the future. An expanding tariff battle between the two sides has raised concerns the trade war would lead to a global economic slowdown.

“The market holds up well, but then the weak hands take over late in the day,” said Ryan Detrick, senior market strategist at LPL Financial in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Pick a worry and it continues to grow and manifest, whether it be trade or looking into consumer confidence, thinking maybe those people did the survey before the China stuff hit the fan. Clearly it’s all about trade.”

Navy reviewing if service members violated policy by wearing 'Make Aircrew Great Again' patches

Source: The Hill

By Justin Wise - 05/28/19 05:57 PM EDT

The Navy is reportedly reviewing whether some service members violated Defense Department policy by wearing "Make Aircrew Great Again" patches during President Trump’s visit to the USS Wasp stationed in Japan.

The Navy said in a statement that the matter was under review by leadership, according to The Associated Press. The department said it was reviewing the patches to ensure they didn't violate any regulations administered by the Defense Department.

The Pentagon has regulations against partisan political acts by service members while in uniform.

The morale patches that featured a play on Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan were spotted on Monday by reporters traveling with the president as he visited the ship during his Japan visit.

Vivian Salama, a White House reporter for The Wall Street Journal, snapped a picture showing at least a few service members wearing the patch, which also included a likeness of Trump in the center.

Troops sometimes wear themed morale patches, which may include humorous images and references unique to the unit.

The drawing/embroidery/photo of his insanely fucking awful hair is infinitely better than his hair has ever been since the mid-70s. Fun!

But really...his hair was never good. Though it was less 'cotton candy' in texture when he was younger, it has always been worn ridiculously.

US watchdog probes cost of Trump Scottish golf tour

A leading ethics watchdog has called for a breakdown of how much public money was spent on Eric Trump’s whirlwind tour of his father’s Scottish golf resorts earlier this month.

The second son of the US president flew dozens of members of one of Trump’s US golf courses across the Atlantic to play Turnberry and Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire.

The large party played rounds at both courses before a celebratory barbecue and drinks reception was laid on at Turnberry’s exclusive lighthouse suite.

Now, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has demanded a breakdown of the cost of the trip to US taxpayers.

The non-profit Washington DC-based organisation, which campaigns to reduce the influence of money in politics and uphold the integrity of government officials, pointed to how previous visits to Trump properties around the world by the 35-year-old have cost the US public tens of thousands of pounds. It has filed a Freedom of Information request with
the US Secret Service to obtain details of the expenses for the most recent Scotland trip, which was widely promoted by the Trump Organisation and its various subsidiaries on social media channels.

The visit was billed by Eric, executive vice-president of development and acquisitions of the Trump Organisation, as part of an “ultimate links tour” event that also took in a trip to Trump’s Doonbeg course in County Clare on
the west coast of Ireland..................................................

Trump appointees overruled EPA experts on pollution requirements for Foxconn site: report

Source: the hill

By John Bowden - 05/28/19 11:59 AM EDT

Political appointees at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reportedly convinced then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to reverse course on declaring a Wisconsin county in violation of federal smog standards, which allowed Foxconn to build a facility in the area without new anti-pollution technologies.

Documents obtained by the Sierra Club and reported by the Star Tribune revealed that a top scientist at the agency questioned the basis for Pruitt's guidance that reversed an earlier decision by officials to declare Racine County as "non-attainment," meaning it would have to adopt new standards to battle air pollution to continue receiving federal funds.

“I do not see a sound technical basis for the area we are being directed to finalize in Wisconsin,” Jenny Liljegren, an EPA scientist focused on air quality, wrote in April 2018, according to the Star Tribune.

“I am still in disbelief,” added another who was not named.

A former acting air quality administrator with the EPA called the revelations in the emails "disturbing," adding that it showed a preference for political influence over the agency's actual scientific work.

Emails show Trump EPA overruled career scientists on Wisconsin air pollution

https://www.politicususa.com/2019/05/28/emails-show-trump-epa-overruled-career-scientists-on-wisconsin-air-pollution.html

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Politically appointed U.S. environmental officials last year overruled concerns of career scientists about air pollution in a Wisconsin county where U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for a factory to be built by Foxconn Technology Co, newly released internal emails show.

Trump has been a supporter of the Taiwanese technology giant Foxconn building a flat screen factory in Racine County Wisconsin, a project the company said could create up to 13,000 jobs. He announced the project at a ceremony in 2017 and has claimed it is proof of his ability to revive U.S. manufacturing. Former Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, a Republican, helped secure about $4 billion in tax breaks for the project.

But Racine County has suffered some of the state’s worst cases of smog, also known as ozone, pollution that causes premature deaths from lung and heart complications.

The emails obtained by the Sierra Club and Clean Wisconsin under a freedom of information request show Trump administration officials, including then-administrator Scott Pruitt, overruled career EPA scientists to exempt Racine County from a list of counties that break smog standards. That has freed Foxconn from having to make millions of dollars in pollution control devices, if the project is eventually built.

The Racine County case is latest example of the administration overlooking concerns flagged by agency scientists over other issues such as climate change or hazardous chemicals.

“My background is in air pollution health effects and more specifically on acute exposures, so for me personally this is hard to digest and support,” Lars Perlmutt, an EPA scientist, wrote to colleagues in an April email last year about pressure to make the exemption, one of the emails shows....................................

Trump’s Foxconn boondoggle could end up being a big liability

In late July 2017, President Trump gathered the media at the White House to announce that Taiwanese corporate giant Foxconn Technology Group would be building a $10 billion manufacturing plant in southeastern Wisconsin.

“This is a great day for American workers and manufacturers and for everyone who believes in the concept and the label 'Made in the USA,’” boasted Trump, promising a “state of the art manufacturing facility for the production of LCD panel products.”

Trump made room in his victory declaration to include Foxconn chief executive and chairman Terry Gou, praising him for his “faith and confidence in the future of the American economy.”

“If I didn’t get elected, he definitely would not be spending $10 billion,” Trump said of Gou, at which point he turned and grabbed the unsuspecting businessman, engaging him in an awkward left-handed bro-grip.

Soon, it will be up to Gou to determine whether that cringe-inducing moment was more of a political death grip.

Since its 2017 unveiling, the Foxconn project has been beset by negative news. By the end of last year, the company had spent only 1 percent of the amount it had pledged to build the factory and had hired only about 10 percent of the employees it anticipated hiring by the end of the project’s first year. In June 2018, the company announced it was downgrading the plant from a “Generation 10.5” facility to a “Generation 6 plant,” which would produce smaller LCD panels. In January, the company announced it was scrapping the LCD portion of the factory altogether, but quickly backtracked after a call from Trump.........................................
