White House waves off needs for more testing — because Americans will never be satisfied and want a test ‘an hour later’

Published 1 min ago on May 6, 2020

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was dismissive of the need for more testing during the briefing Wednesday.

According to McEnany the United States leads the world in testing, which doesn’t exactly create the whole picture. The U.S. has tested fewer than 2 percent of Americans and has one of the lowest rates of testing per capita in the world.

McEnany then waved off the idea that Americans needed to be tested, saying “it’s simply nonsensical.”

“If we tested every individual, we’d have to test an hour later and an hour later,” because COVID-19 could be contracted an hour after a test.

States with few virus cases get big share of relief aid

Source: AP

By GEOFF MULVIHILL 21 minutes ago

Alaska, Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming are not epicenters of the coronavirus pandemic. Yet these four states scored big this spring when Congress pumped out direct federal aid, while the two hardest-hit states, New York and New Jersey, got comparatively little given the vast numbers of cases and deaths they have seen.

An Associated Press analysis shows that some states with small populations like these took in an out-sized share of the $150 billion in federal money that was designed to address coronavirus-related expenses, when measured by the number of positive tests for the COVID-19 disease.

Their haul ranged from $2 million per positive test in Hawaii to nearly $3.4 million per test in Alaska. In Wyoming, with less than 600 positive cases, the $1.25 billion it received equates to 80 percent of its annual general state budget.

By comparison, New York and New Jersey received about $24,000 and $27,000, respectively, for each positive coronavirus test. Other states with high numbers of cases, including Massachusetts, Michigan and Illinois, received less than $100,000 per case.

“If there’s a fire, you don’t spray the whole neighborhood. You spray the house that’s on fire,” said Bill Hammond, director of public health policy at the Empire Center for Public Policy, a nonpartisan government watchdog in New York. He said it doesn’t make sense in this case to follow the normal political procedure of giving every state so much in the face of a public health crisis.

To be sure, the lowest population states often receive higher dollar amounts per capita when Congress doles out federal aid. That’s due in part to political reality: Small states have the same number of U.S. senators as more populous ones, and those senators lobby hard for their states’ interests.

The awards in the relief act passed in late March were based on population, but with a catch: Every state was to receive at least $1.25 billion, regardless of its size. Lawmakers said setting such a minimum was needed to reach a deal in a divided government.

In the coronavirus fight, the disproportionate share going to smaller states has consequences. States with high numbers of infections and deaths say they need that money for immediate expenses related to fighting an outbreak that threatened to overwhelm their hospital systems, from staff overtime to setting up makeshift hospitals.

For weeks now, I've been tracking the daily COVID-19 numbers at the county level in several states; particularly Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. While the pandemic hit the more densely-populated areas first (which tend to lean Democratic), the trendlines in Michigan and Wisconsin have been clearly moving towards the more rural, Republican-leaning counties increasing their share of the cases and corresponding deaths as time has passed.

Pennsylvania has been different--after a less dramatic shift from blue to red counties in late March, PA seems to have levelled off, with new cases holding pretty steady between the two.

It's been another week, so I figured I should post and update...and it's more of the same in all three cases. First up, Michigan:.......

.................

Finally, there's Wisconsin...and here, the trend is absolutely clear:

.......................

.....................

And there you have it. In Wisconsin, the trend has gone from 7:3 cases in counties won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 to nearly a 50/50 split. Unless there's some dramatic reversal, the red counties will overtake the blue ones within a few days.

This is even more dramatic when comparing the number of cases found in the two biggest Democratic strongholds in the state (Madison and Milwaukee) to the surrounding areas, although again, those cities only compose a portion of their counties. Viewed in this light, you could argue that COVID-19 is already more of a "red area" problem than a blue one in Wisconsin:

I'm compiling similar data and charts for several other states, including Minnesota and Texas. I was hoping to do so for Florida and Georgia as well, but neither state makes it easy to grab case or death data earlier than the current day. Stay tuned...

Trump Expresses Wish That Women Reporters at White House Were More Like '50s Housewives

President Donald Trump has singled out two “angry” women reporters and suggested that he wished they acted more like demure housewives from the 1950s. In a wild interview with the New York Post, Trump complained that he found two female CBS News journalists—Weijia Jiang and Paula Reid—particularly irritating during his recent streak of coronavirus press briefings. “It wasn’t Donna Reed, I can tell you that,” Trump said, referring to the screen star best known for playing Mary Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life and starring as a TV housewife in the eponymous sitcom of the ’50s and ’60s. Trump went on: “Paula Reid, she’s sitting there and I say, ‘How angry. I mean, What’s the purpose?’ They’re not even tough questions, but you see the attitude of these people, it’s like incredible.” In response, Reid tweeted Tuesday morning: “President Trump tells @nypost I am nothing like 50’s American archetypal mom Donna Reed. Fact-check: True.” For her part, Jiang responded “The President told me to be ‘nice and easy’ three out of the last four times I asked him a question.”

Ammon Bundy Blames Jews For The Holocaust At Idaho Anti-Lockdown Rally

By Christopher Mathias

Anti-government extremist Ammon Bundy, speaking on the steps of the state Capitol building in Boise, Idaho, on Saturday, compared government measures to slow the spread of the coronavirus to the Nazis’ genocide of Jews during World War II.

Bundy, a notorious militia leader who once organized an armed takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge, made the absurd comparison while speaking at an “Idaho Is Open For Business” rally ― one of several anti-lockdown demonstrations held across the country demanding that governors allow businesses to reopen despite the urgent warnings of public health experts.

The Boise rally appears to have been organized, in part, by an anti-vaccination conspiracy group called Health Freedom Idaho, together with the Idaho Freedom Foundation, a powerful far-right libertarian organization in the state with ties to right-wing billionaire Charles Koch.

In a speech at Saturday’s rally, Bundy compared the temporary closure of nonessential businesses in America to the systematic torture and murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis.

“Just look at the pictures of the Holocaust,” Bundy told the crowd of hundreds, according to a video of the event posted to YouTube. “It always amazes me how you see pictures of men and women stripped completely naked, lined up and facing a mass grave, where they are shooting them in the back of the head and falling in the grave.”

“Now the answer to that is not easy ― but it is this, and I have been there and I know for a fact that this is true,” Bundy continued. “When you have faced so much tyranny in your life, there is a point when you would rather line up naked and get shot in the head. And my friends, why we’re here today right now is to make sure that never happens!”.....................................

Bundy’s alleged experience of “tyranny” is nothing compared to what European Jews experienced in the 1930s and ’40s.

Countries pledge $8 billion for coronavirus vaccine, but U.S. absent

Source: nbc

A Trump administration official said the U.S. is already a leader in the fight against the virus with over $2.4 billion committed to global health, aid.

By Linda Givetash and Abigail Williams

An international campaign to find a vaccine for the coronavirus raised $8 billion from governments and organizations on Monday, but the United States was notably absent from the effort.

The European Commission co-led a virtual conference in response to the World Health Organization's appeal for global collaboration in the response to the pandemic, which saw support from leaders across Europe, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Canada.

China, where the virus originated, was only represented by its ambassador to the European Union.

“This will help kick-start unprecedented global cooperation,” said Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission.
US skips EU summit that pledges billions for vaccine efforts

A senior Trump administration official told reporters on Monday that while the efforts are welcome, the U.S. has already given significant funding and support to organizations and programs that benefit from the drive.

"It’s one of many pledging efforts that are going on, and the United States is at the lead, really at the forefront of those international efforts with an incredibly robust ramp-up effort that’s begun here in the United States," said the official.

President Donald Trump has been leading regular virtual meetings with G7 leaders and ministers to coordinate the response, the official said. The U.S. is also providing $2.4 billion toward fighting COVID-19 globally through global health, humanitarian and economic efforts.

The Trump administration's absence from the campaign followed an announcement last month to halt funding to the WHO — accounting for roughly 15 percent of the agency's budget — pending a review of the agency's response to the pandemic. The president had accused the WHO of "severely mismanaging and covering up" the coronavirus crisis, specifically the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China.......................

Trump Got Exemption to Use Lincoln Memorial

Source: politicalwire

May 4, 2020 at 7:56 pm EDT

New York Times: “While Mr. Trump and many other presidents have hosted inauguration concerts and gatherings on the memorial’s steps, any event meant to draw an audience inside the interior near Daniel Chester French’s sculpture of a seated Lincoln is prohibited. The area above the top of the steps, where the columns begin, constitutes a boundary protected by federal law.”

“So on Sunday, when the president sat down with two Fox News anchors at Lincoln’s marbled feet during a coronavirus-focused virtual ‘town hall,’ it was because a directive issued by David Bernhardt, the secretary of the interior, had allowed them to do so.”

The winners of the 2020 Pulitzer Prizes were announced in atypical fashion Monday afternoon.

Usually held at Columbia University in New York City, due to the coronavirus pandemic this year’s Pulitzer announcement took place in Pulitzer administrator Dana Canedy’s living room and being livestreamed via YouTube.

The Pulitzers are generally regarded as the highest honor that U.S.-based journalists and organizations can receive.

Poynter President Neil Brown is a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board. Brown declined to discuss last week’s board deliberations, but offered:

“The Pulitzers once again remind us that sometimes a little guy — one journalist, a small newsroom, even a curious tipster — can land a strong blow against systemic abuse, neglect or injustice in our communities. The stories we celebrate not only enlighten, but they also help us engage. An enduring theme of American journalism is that it helps move us off the sidelines, get involved, demand action. In these confusing times of crisis, it’s useful to remember that journalism is part of the democracy tool kit, and we need not feel powerless.”

Here are the 2020 Pulitzer Prize winners:
