‘Steamrolled’ Republicans fuming after Trump leaves them in the dark over IG firing: ‘We deserve an explanation’

Published 1 min ago on May 19, 2020

According to a report from Politico, Republican lawmakers have been left in an awkward position by Donald Trump after he fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick — and provided them no talking points or explanation to defend his decision.

The report notes, “Senate Republicans find themselves in a familiar place: steamrolled by President Donald Trump’s purge of government watchdogs and offering little indication of how they plan to stop him,” before adding, that the president has failed to offer “a clear explanation for his decision, as required by law.”

“The president has defied Senate Republicans without hesitation, continuing to fire and reassign inspectors general whom he feels are insufficiently loyal to him without engendering blowback from his party. It’s a dynamic that reflects both Trump’s hold on the GOP and the limits of Congress’ broader ability to rein in a president,” Politico reports.

In the meantime, GOP lawmakers say they are waiting for a response from the president to letter from Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) asking for an explanation, but that hasn’t stopped them from expressing their frustration when speaking with reporters..........................

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s ranking member, have demanded that the Trump administration hand over all records related to Linick’s firing by Friday.

In a statement over the weekend, Engel and Menendez said that they understood Pompeo recommended Linick be fired “because the Inspector General had opened an investigation into wrongdoing by Secretary Pompeo himself.”

...........NBC and other outlets reported Monday that Linick was also nearly done with another probe, this one dealing with Pompeo’s approval of a multibillion-dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia.

The Trump administration had issued an emergency declaration to push the deal through without requiring congressional approval. Resolutions to block the deal passed the Democrat-led House, but were vetoed by Trump. A Senate attempt to override the veto failed.

Engel in a statement Monday told CNBC: “I have learned that there may be another reason for Mr. Linick’s firing. His office was investigating — at my request — Trump’s phony declaration of an emergency so he could send weapons to Saudi Arabia.”

Trump on Pompeo: I'd rather have him working than doing dishes 'because maybe his wife isn't there'

Source: TPM

By John Bowden - 05/18/20 06:11 PM EDT

President Trump responded Monday to criticism of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recommendation that Trump fire a State Department inspector general (IG) who was investigating Pompeo for misuse of government resources, telling reporters he would rather Pompeo assign government workers to wash his dishes or perform other tasks in order to free up time.

Speaking with reporters at the White House, Trump defended Pompeo as a "high-quality person" and a "brilliant guy," while suggesting that the nation's top diplomat had assigned government employees to perform household tasks because his wife or children were not around.

"[N]ow I have you telling me about dog walking, washing dishes and you know what, I’d rather have him on the phone with some world leader than have him wash dishes because maybe his wife isn’t there or his kids aren’t...you know," Trump said.

Linick was overseeing an active investigation into whether or not Pompeo misused a political appointee at the State Department to run errands for both the secretary and his wife, as well as a separate probe into whether Trump illegally issued an emergency declaration in May 2019 to move ahead on weapons sales to Saudi Arabia without congressional authorization...................................

The charitable apparel pokes fun at the president's recent mask factory incident

Spencer Kaufman on May 13, 2020, 11:47pm

.............

.........................
Last week, President Trump toured a factory in Arizona that was manufacturing essential N-95 face masks while not wearing a mask himself. That was glaring enough, but the fact that Guns N’ Roses’ cover of “Live and Let Die” was blaring over the factory’s loudspeakers at the same time took the irony to a whole ’nother level.

Now, a week later, Guns N’ Roses are commemorating the incident (and mocking Trump) by selling the aforementioned “Live N’ Let Die With COVID 45” t-shirt for $25 each. Better yet, 100-percent of the net proceeds are going to MusiCares, which has set up a COVID-19 relief fund to help workers in the music industry who have experienced financial hardship as a result of the pandemic.

Of course, the “45” in “COVID 45” refers to Trump’s political nickname as the 45th President of the United States. The Commander in Chief is not the only member of the White House to face the wrath of Guns N’ Roses lately. Axl Rose recently called Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin an “asshole” for stating, “This is a great time for people to explore America.” Mnuchin even responded, resulting in a further takedown from the GN’R singer....

WH doctor: 'Potential benefit' of Trump taking hydroxychloroquine 'outweighed' risks

Source: the hill

By Brett Samuels - 05/18/20 08:23 PM EDT

President Trump's physician on Monday confirmed that the president is now taking the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine despite not having the coronavirus, saying he and Trump concluded "the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks."

In a 114-word letter released by the White House hours after Trump announced he was taking the medication, presidential physician Sean Conley wrote that he discussed the pros and cons of taking the drug with Trump after one of his personal valets tested positive for the coronavirus.

But the letter contained no specifics on when Trump started taking the drug or what his dosage is.

"In consultation with our inter-agency partners and subject matter experts around the country, I continue to monitor the myriad studies investigating potential COVID-19 therapies, and I anticipate employing the same shared medical decision making based on the evidence at hand in the future," Conley wrote.......................

'I cannot stress this enough: This will kill you.' Fox News host Neil Cavuto was shocked by Trump's announcement that he's taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent coronavirus.

Fox News host Neil Cavuto was stunned by President Donald Trump's announcement on Monday that he was taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventive treatment for coronavirus.
A recent study by the Department of Veterans Affairs found hydroxychloroquine is linked to higher death rates for VA patients hospitalized with the disease.
Citing the study, Cavuto warned: "If you are in a risky population here, and you are taking this as a preventative treatment to ward off the virus or in a worst-case scenario you are dealing with the virus, and you are in this vulnerable population, it will kill you. I cannot stress enough: This will kill you."
"This is a leap that should not be taken casually by those watching at home who are assuming, well, the president of the United States says it's OK," he added. "I only make this not to make a political point here, but a life-and-death point. Be very, very careful."

Barr: Obama, Biden not under criminal investigation despite Trump's claims

Source: USA Today yahoo

USA TODAY•May 18, 2020

WASHINGTON – Attorney General William Barr said Monday that former President Barack Obama and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden are not under investigation, despite President Donald Trump’s assertions that his predecessor’s administration committed criminal offenses.

Trump has repeatedly accused Obama of unjustly targeting his associates in what he calls "Obamagate," and has.......................

Barr, during an unrelated briefing on the continuing inquiry into December’s deadly shooting at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, said he would not allow the criminal justice system to be “used as a political weapon.”

“The criminal justice system will not be used for partisan political ends,” Barr said, before launching a blistering critique of the Russia investigation.

..................................

The attorney general has tapped John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to lead a parallel inquiry into the origins of the Russia probe. Barr said the Russia inquiry, led by special counsel Robert Mueller, promoted an “utterly false” theory that the Trump campaign had colluded with the Russian government.

While Barr said Monday that he does not expect Durham's work to lead to a criminal investigation of either Obama or Biden, he suggested that "others" could be vulnerable in the criminal inquiry.

THE HYPE over the drug hydroxychloroquine was fueled by President Trump and Fox News, whose hosts touted it repeatedly on air. The president’s claims were not backed by scientific evidence, but he was enthusiastic. “What do you have to lose?” he has asked. In desperation, the public snapped up pills and the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization on March 28 for the drug to be given to hospitalized patients. On Thursday, Mr. Trump declared, “So we have had some great response, in terms of doctors writing letters and people calling on the hydroxychloroquine.”

Now comes the evidence. Two large studies of hospitalized patients in New York City have found the drug was essentially useless against the virus.

One study, by Eli S. Rosenberg and colleagues, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examined 1,438 patients suffering from infection across 25 hospitals in the New York area between March 15 and 28. The study also looked at those who received hydroxychloroquine along with the antibiotic azithromycin. Mr Trump had heralded the combination as “a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.” The conclusion of the study: “Among patients hospitalized in metropolitan New York with COVID-19, treatment with hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, or both, compared with neither treatment, was not significantly associated with differences in in-hospital mortality.”
AD

The second study, by Joshua Geleris and colleagues, examined 1,376 patients at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Irving Medical Center in northern Manhattan from March 7 to April 8. Their conclusion in the New England Journal of Medicine: “In this analysis involving a large sample of consecutive patients who had been hospitalized with Covid-19, the risk of intubation or death was not significantly higher or lower among patients who received hydroxychloroquine than among those who did not.” The results, they said, “do not support the use of hydroxychloroquine at present” except in clinical trials..............................
