Trans Woman Murdered in D.C. Suburb Is Second This Year

Source: advocate.com

June 14 2019 5:13 PM EDT

A transgender woman was murdered Thursday night in Fairmount Heights, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. — the second homicide of a trans woman in that town this year.

Zoe Spears, 23, who lived in Washington, was found with a gunshot wound on a street in Fairmount Heights just before midnight and was pronounced dead at the scene, The Washington Post reports.

Trans woman Ashanti Carmon was shot to death in the suburb March 27, and her body was discovered “less than half a mile away from where Spears was found,” the Post notes. Her murder is still under investigation.

“There’s no direct link that we see at this point, but that is obviously something we are monitoring very closely,” said Maj. Brian Reilly, commander of the criminal investigation division for Prince George’s County police, according to the paper.

“It’s unusual that we had two murders like this within a couple blocks of each other,” he added.

And now Trump has banned trans from the military. Horrible.

"Spears is the 10th transgender American known to have been murdered this year. All of them have been women of color."

It's Donald Trump's birthday, but it's #JohnMcCainDay on Twitter

Source: cnn

Updated 2:08 PM ET, Fri June 14, 2019

(CNN)June 14th is Flag Day.

June 14th is President Donald Trump's birthday.

And on Twitter, June 14th is #JohnMcCainDay -- a clear dig at the President on his favorite social networking platform.
Thousands of users decided to troll the President on his birthday on Friday by celebrating his late Republican rival John McCain. By mid-morning, the hashtag #JohnMcCainDay was a top Twitter trend.

It all started with Andy Lassner, the executive producer of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."
"Honoring an American hero today," Lassner wrote. "Let's celebrate @realDonaldTrump's birthday today by having #JohnMcCainDay trend. I'm sure this would mean a lot to [a] patriot like Donald Trump."
Users responded to Lassner's callout and the hashtag quickly went viral -- it even reached the top of the trending list on Twitter.
Pretty soon, even members of Congress were joining in -- though it's not clear they were aware how it started.

Employees turn their back on Agriculture secretary over being relocated to Kansas City

Source: CNN

Updated 1:18 PM ET, Fri June 14, 2019

(CNN)Employees from two Department of Agriculture research agencies stood and turned their backs to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue at an all-hands meeting Thursday to silently protest a decision to relocate the agencies halfway across the country.

Perdue announced earlier Thursday morning that the Economic Research Service, which provides research and statistical analysis for lawmakers, and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which allocates federal research funding, will be relocated to Kansas City from Washington, DC, the final announcement in a process that began last year.

The department says the move will save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, but many employees view the change as politically driven and a way to disrupt climate research and other work with which their bosses disagree. Both agencies recently voted overwhelmingly to unionize to push back against the move.

Perdue announced the final relocation site in a letter that was distributed to employees Thursday morning. Perdue and the department have argued that the move will lower living costs, save taxpayer dollars and move the agencies closer to "stakeholders." ......................................

Klobuchar backs impeachment proceedings 'beginning now'

Sen. Amy Klobuchar shifted further into the pro-impeachment camp, saying Friday she would support the House beginning proceedings to remove the president “beginning now.”

Klobuchar had previously been more ambivalent on the issue, as recently as several weeks ago reiterating that she saw impeachment as “one way to investigate and hold this administration accountable if the White House keeps stonewalling.”

But in an interview on CNN’s “New Day,” Klobuchar confirmed that she would back impeachment proceedings beginning immediately.

“I would support an impeachment proceeding beginning now, but I also understand they may be wanting to do investigations leading up to it and I think they should be given the time to do that,” she said, calling the move a “possibility” in the House.

The Minnesota Democrat is just the latest 2020 Democrat to back impeaching the president, and her shift comes days after Trump said in an interview he would likely accept dirt on a political opponent from a foreign national or government, and wouldn’t necessarily alert the FBI about it.

But while the senator said she had seen evidence that could lead to Trump’s impeachment, she emphasized that the House is on the right path with its investigations into Trump. She appeared hopeful that Hope Hicks, former White House communications director and one of Trump’s greatest confidantes, had agreed to testify behind closed doors to the House Judiciary Committee, where impeachment proceedings would initiate.

Still, she said, “the point is you have the obstruction of justice which I think you've seen a bit of again today with what he said about Don McGahn, but then you also have going on this interference in our election, where he is blatantly engaging in this and asking people to interfere in the election. And remember, it’s a foreign country that didn't do it with missiles or tanks but they did it with cyber warfare.”....................................................

Pelosi On Trump Attacking Her On D-Day: 'I Felt Really Sorry For Him'

Source: TPM

June 13, 2019 7:31 pm

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said on Thursday evening that she felt “really sorry” for President Donald Trump when he attacked her on D-Day.

Pelosi told CNN reporter Fareed Zakaria that it’s a “practice” to never criticize the President overseas and indicated that it would’ve especially wrong to do so in front of the tombstones at Normandy.

“When he came on later in front of the same tombstones and started saying all of this stuff, it was so beyond inappropriate I felt really sorry for him,” the House speaker said.
