Exposure to Sean Hannity may be lethal, studies on COVID-19 suggest
New studies suggest a correlation between Hannity’s stubborn denial of the coronavirus and a higher rate of cases in areas where he has the most viewers.

By Joe Berkowitz2 minute Read

What: A round of recent studies that suggests infection and mortality rates for COVID-19 are higher in areas where Fox News star Sean Hannity reaches the most viewers.

Who: Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and the University of Chicago, and other sources, as surfaced by the Washington Post.

Why we care: If only the current surge of COVID-19 cases in the U.S. marked the beginning of a dreaded Second Wave. Instead, our inability to get the coronavirus under control in any meaningful way nationwide indicates we are still in the throes of the first wave.

It didn’t have to be this way, as several other countries around the world have proved. One of the reasons the coronavirus has spun out of control in the U.S., though, is misinformation in our media. As the Washington Post reports, one of the worst offenders in influencing Americans’ opinions and behavior around the virus is Fox News personality Sean Hannity.

The article, written by Christopher Ingraham, draws from three studies to show how conservative media has polluted the informational waters of the coronavirus, amplifying false or misleading claims, promoting conspiracy theories, and discouraging preventative measures from viewers at key moments. One study, however, by economists at the University of Chicago and other institutions, focuses on Sean Hannity specifically, showing how the difference between his coverage of the virus and Tucker Carlson’s likely played a part in higher infection and mortality rates in areas where his show reaches the most viewers..............................................

Trump rally speaker calls Aunt Jemima ‘picture of the American Dream’

A speaker at a Trump rally in Arizona has gone viral after calling Aunt Jemima “the picture of the American Dream.”

“Aunt Jemima was canceled,” Reagan Escudé told Tuesday’s Students for Trump event in Phoenix, referring to the syrup brand’s decision to rebrand after ongoing arguments that its 130-year mascot was racially insensitive.

“And if you didn’t know, Nancy Green, the original, first Aunt Jemima, she was the picture of the American dream,” the Southern Baptist from Louisiana continued to claps and cheers from the audience.

“She was a freed slave who went on to be the face of the pancake syrup that we love and we have in our pantries today.

“She fought for equality, and now the leftist mob is trying to erase her legacy,” Escudé complained to cheers.......................................

The Dixie Chicks are now the Chicks.

The platinum-selling country trio, which in 2003 became pariahs in Nashville for criticizing President George W. Bush on the eve of the American-led invasion of Iraq, has changed its name, apparently in tacit acknowledgment of criticism over its use of the word “Dixie,” a nostalgic nickname for the Civil War-era South.

The group made the change stealthily on Thursday, releasing a new video as the Chicks and adjusting its social media presence. Representatives for the band confirmed the new name.

But the three women of the group — Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, who have been among the most outspoken figures in the conservative world of country music — made little immediate comment..............................

Sen. Tom Cotton once told Cassandra Butts that he was blocking her nomination to be an ambassador

Tom Cotton once told Cassandra Butts that he was blocking her nomination to be an ambassador because he knew she was Obama’s friend, and knew it would hurt Obama.

She spent 835 days waiting, and then died of leukemia.

That’s who @TomCottonAR is.

An Obama Nominee’s Crushed Hopes

Frank Bruni June 6, 2016

In early 2014, after decades of government and nonprofit work that reflected a passion for public service, Cassandra Butts got a reward — or so she thought. She was nominated by President Obama to be the next United States ambassador to the Bahamas.
.........................

The Senate held a hearing about her nomination in May 2014, and then … nothing. Summer came and went. So did fall. A new year arrived. Then another new year after that.

When I met her last month, she’d been waiting more than 820 days to be confirmed.

...........................................
.................................

At another point Senator Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, put a hold specifically on Butts and on nominees for the ambassadorships to Sweden and Norway. He had a legitimate gripe with the Obama administration over a Secret Service leak of private information about a fellow member of Congress, and he was trying to pressure Obama to take punitive action. But that issue was unrelated to Butts and the Bahamas.

Cotton eventually released the two other holds, but not the one on Butts. She told me that she once went to see him about it, and he explained that he knew that she was a close friend of Obama’s — the two first encountered each other on a line for financial-aid forms at Harvard Law School, where they were classmates — and that blocking her was a way to inflict special pain on the president.

Cotton’s spokeswoman did not dispute Butts’s characterization of that meeting, and stressed, in separate emails, that Cotton had enormous respect for her and her career.........................................
