Scoop: Trump tells advisers Israel should bar entry to Reps. Omar and Tlaib

Source: axios

Jonathan Swan, Barak Ravid of Israel's Channel 13 news 5 hours ago

President Trump has told advisers he thinks Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should use Israel's anti-boycott law to bar Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) from entering Israel, according to three sources familiar with the situation.

What he's saying: Trump's private views have reached the top level of the Israeli government. But Trump denies, through White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, ever giving any kind of directive to the Israelis. "The Israeli government can do what they want. It's fake news," Grisham said on Saturday.

Driving the news: Trump has told U.S. advisers, including senior Trump administration officials, that Israel should bar Omar and Tlaib's entry because the two congresswomen favor a boycott of Israel, according to sources familiar with Trump's private comments. In 2017, Israel's parliament passed a law requiring the interior minister to block foreign nationals from entering Israel if they have supported boycotting the Jewish state.

Trump's reaction came days after the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed a resolution to condemn the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, or BDS movement, which Omar and Tlaib support. The resolution states that the global movement to boycott the state of Israel over its policies toward Palestinians "promotes principles of collective guilt, mass punishment and group isolation, which are destructive of prospects for progress towards peace."...................................

This was good but FAR more powerful: she was the only speaker to leave the stage and embrace a gun survivor. This matters. People want to see and feel connection to their president.

Equally good: She explains w great tenderness about trauma of children exposed to violence, media treating deaths of black and brown men as disposable. She recalls meeting w moms who've lost sons. She explains how these kids act out and get labeled as troublemakers. Remarkable.

Source: the hill

By Tal Axelrod - 08/10/19 04:14 PM EDT

.................................

While Democrats widely agree on several reforms, including implementing universal background checks and capping the size of magazines, the party remains divided on the viability of banning assault rifles, the types of weapons that have been used in several high-profile mass shootings, including the two last week.
........................................
Legislation that was introduced in the House in February to outlaw assault rifles currently has 196 cosponsors, all of whom are Democrats.

Here are the 12 Democrats representing districts President Trump won in 2016 who back the measure:

Rep. Matt Cartwright (Pa.)

Rep. Angie Craig (Minn.)

Rep. Antonio Delgado (N.Y.)

Rep. Josh Gottheimer (N.J.) **

Rep. Lucy McBath (Ga.)

Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.)

Rep. David Loebsack (Iowa) *

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (N.Y.)

Rep. Chris Pappas (N.H.) **

Rep. Max Rose (N.Y.)

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (N.J.)

Rep. Norma Torres (Calif.)

* Not seeking reelection in 2020

** Cosponsored the legislation after last weekend’s shootings

8/9/2019

A Democrat looking to unseat Rep. Steve King (R) in Iowa’s 4th District said Friday that the attitude among farmers towards climate change has changed significantly over the past few years.

"Is the topic of climate change — is that something people are starting to talk about," Hill.TV co-host Krystal Ball asked.

“It’s night and day with that issue from where we started two years ago to now, especially with all of the 2020 candidates talking about it and going around,” J.D. Scholten responded, referring to a number of 2020 Democrats who have been campaigning at the Iowa State Fair this week.

“They know something’s different — in our planning season, in our harvest season, it’s a lot wetter and in the summer it’s a lot drier and all the reports show that agriculture’s going to be the biggest thing hit when it comes to climate change,” he continued.............................

The Environmental Protection Agency has recently reauthorized the use of controversial chemical traps to kill coyotes, dogs, foxes and other wild animals across the U.S. These "cyanide bombs" are meant to protect livestock although some environmental groups are calling for a nationwide ban and saying they are inhumane.

According to a recent interim decision, EPA officials approved the use of M-44 devices, which trap wildlife with bait before releasing sodium cyanide into their mouths, killing them.

The devices "inhumanely and indiscriminately killing thousands of animals every year," the Center for Biological Diversity said in a statement Wednesday. "They have also injured people."

Wildlife Services, the division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture responsible for wildlife management, is authorized to use the devices, as are state agencies in South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico and Texas. Wildlife Services kills large numbers of wild animals every year on behalf of farmers and ranchers.

At the end of 2018, the EPA proposed the renewed use of sodium cyanide, allowing time for public comment until March. More than 99.9 percent of comments urged the EPA to ban M-44s, according to an analysis by the Center for Biological Diversity and Western Environmental Law Center. .....................

On a day when the U.S. president vowed to tone down his rhetoric and help the country heal after two mass slayings, he did the opposite

August 8, 2019 1:48 PM EDT

On a day when President Donald Trump vowed to tone down his rhetoric and help the country heal following two mass slayings, he did the opposite – lacing his visits Wednesday to El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, with a flurry of attacks on local leaders and memorializing his trips with grinning thumbs-up photos.

A traditional role for presidents has been to offer comfort and solace to all Americans at times of national tragedy, but the day provided a fresh testament to Trump’s limitations in striking notes of unity and empathy.

When Trump swooped into the grieving border city of El Paso to offer condolences after the massacre of Latinos, allegedly by a white supremacist, some of the city’s elected leaders and thousands of its residents declared the president unwelcome.

In his only public remarks during the trip, Trump lashed out at Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, both Democrats, over their characterization of his visit with hospital patients in Dayton.

“We had an amazing day,” Trump said in El Paso as he concluded his visit. “As you know, we left Ohio. The love, the respect for the office of the presidency.”

Trump also praised El Paso police officers and other first responders and shook their hands, telling one female officer, “I saw you on television the other day and you were fantastic.”

None of the eight patients still being treated at University Medical Center in El Paso agreed to meet with Trump when he visited the hospital, UMC spokesman Ryan Mielke said. Two victims who already had been discharged returned to the hospital to meet with the president...................................................................

The president apparently thought he should’ve been nominated for sainthood for his response to the mass shooting, and reportedly threw a fit on Air Force One over not getting more “credit.”

By Bess Levin August 8, 2019

Despite no one wanting him to come, Donald Trump traveled on Wednesday to El Paso, Texas, where a gunman killed 22 people over the weekend after posting an anti-immigrant manifesto that could’ve been cribbed from one of the president’s rallies. The purpose of the trip was to gin up some good press for Trump after he was largely blamed for inspiring the massacre, but, of course, the poster child for narcissistic personality disorder couldn’t keep it together and act like a human for more than a few minutes. Instead, he used a trip to the hospital where victims were being treated to lash out at Beto O’Rourke, calling the 2020 hopeful “crazy” and lying about one of his favorite subjects: crowd sizes. .....................................................

The Washington Post reports that Trump threw a giant hissy fit on Air Force One because news cameras had not accompanied him in the hospital, causing coverage of the visit to be dominated by his foes....................................................................

While the president’s aides explained to reporters that cameras were kept out of the hospital due to logistical and privacy concerns, two White House officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said there were concerns that they could capture an impolitic moment or the president making an insensitive comment.

Which, of course, is exactly what happened. A senior administration official subsequently characterized the trip as “not ideal,” which feels more like a way to describe a new hire’s request to push back their start date, or a roast chicken coming out dry, than a president’s decision to trash talk his opponents to hospital staffers who’ve spent the past four days trying to ensure people don’t succumb to injuries suffered in a mass shooting. In fact, the only way the visit could’ve been less ideal is if Trump had stood over a hospital bed making victims tell him who they voted for in 2016, and then offered one of his trademark pieces of mouth sewage. “This guy says didn’t vote for me,” you can practically hear him saying. “Probably wishes he did, but that’s okay, that’s alright. You know I could have him transferred to a shittier hospital. Not that I would do that, other presidents would’ve done that. I wouldn’t do that. Maybe I’d think about it but I wouldn’t do that.”

GIBSONTON, Fla. (FOX 13) - Deputies say a man drove a golf cart into a Walmart in Gibsonton and attempted to run people over.

....................................

Deputies arrived and began speaking with the man, identified as 56-year-old Michael Hudson. While speaking with deputies, Hudson suddenly accelerated the golf cart through the heavily congested pedestrian area in front of the store toward the main entrance.

The sheriff's office said Hudson nearly struck numerous pedestrians who ran to avoid being hit.

Despite being ordered to stop, deputies said Hudson continued at a high rate of speed and crashed the golf cart through the glass front doors, and continued accelerating into the checkout area of the store.

Hudson crashed into a cash register after hitting several patrons, while others managed to jump out of the way, the sheriff's office said.............................
