Donald Trump said he's done more for African Americans than any president. Historians disagree

President Donald Trump has often claimed credit for African American economic success, such as touting the African American unemployment rate on his watch. But amid swirling controversies over his tweets attacking Rep. Elijah Cummings and his heavily African American district in Maryland, he took it to a new level during July 30 remarks to reporters at the White House.

"What I've done for African Americans in two and a half years, no president has been able to do anything like it," Trump said. "Unemployment at the lowest level in the history of our country for African Americans — nobody can beat that. You look at poverty levels, they’re doing better than they’ve ever done before. So many things. Opportunity zones. Criminal justice reform — President Obama couldn’t get it done."

When we took a closer look, we found that Trump does have a point about some of the economic and policy details he mentioned. His campaign also pointed to a double-digit funding increase he sought and signed for historically black colleges and universities.

However, Trump overstated his own standing within history. It’s exceedingly difficult for Trump to top the landmark efforts by his predecessors in the White House, including Abraham Lincoln, who fought the Civil War and pushed the constitutional amendments that ended slavery, and Lyndon B. Johnson, who fought for and signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

Because Trump’s boast is ultimately an opinion, we won’t put it to the Truth-O-Meter. However, we’ll take a look at the evidence and share the views of presidential historians........................................

'Final proof that he has gone mad': Denmark mocks Trump's reported desire to buy Greenland

Amid reports that President Donald Trump has directed aides to examine whether the United States can purchase Greenland—an autonomous territory of Denmark—Danish lawmakers on Friday condemned the idea as both absurd and “grotesque.”

“If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof that he has gone mad,” Soren Espersen, foreign affairs spokesman for the Danish People’s Party, told local broadcaster DR. “The thought of Denmark selling 50,000 citizens to the United States is completely ridiculous.”

“We are talking about real people and you can’t just sell Greenland like an old colonial power. But what we can take seriously is that the U.S. stakes and interest in the Arctic is significantly on the rise.”
—Martin Lidegaard, Danish Social Liberal Party

The Wall Street Journal first reported on Trump’s desire to purchase Greenland Thursday night..........................

...........Aaja Chemnitz Larsen, Danish MP from Greenland’s second-largest party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA), told Reuters on Friday that she is “sure a majority in Greenland believes it is better to have a relation to Denmark than the United States, in the long-term.”..................

On Friday, Twitter suspended the account of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. And Scaramucci has pretty good idea why.

“I think it is related to ‘fat shaming’ President Trump,” Scaramucci told Axios’s Jonathan Swan Friday morning. “I should have said he is the largest proportioned President since William Howard Taft. My bad.” Trump’s former communications director, who stayed on the job for less than one month, has become a critic of the president.

The Census Bureau says it can obtain the data President Trump will need to facilitate a game-changing, GOP-boosting redistricting overhaul. The outside experts who work with redistricting data aren’t so sure.

Having failed in his attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, Trump resorted to what amounts to a backup plan: an executive order commanding the Census Bureau to use existing government records to come up with citizenship data.

The overhaul is part of a broad effort to let states exclude noncitizens in how they draw legislative maps, which would increase representation for Republican-leaning whites, while diminishing the political power of diverse, immigrant-friendly communities.

The Census Bureau told Congress recently that it would be producing the kinds of citizenship data that would let red states exclude noncitizens from consideration in redistricting. However, redistricting experts and outside census wonks TPM spoke to in the last few weeks raised several concerns about the accuracy of the citizenship data the Census Bureau will be producing.

Doubts about the accuracy and validity of the census data could open lines of legal attack on redistricting efforts that rely on the data, foreshadowing a new wave of redistricting challenges in 2021.

“It is, I think, a very big question and whether or not this thing could really be pulled off,” Kimball Brace, president of Election Data Services Inc. told TPM.

In written answers submitted to Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) that were shared with TPM Tuesday, the Census Bureau signaled it was moving full steam ahead with the effort.

In the answers, the Census Bureau confirmed that it was producing “block level” data on “citizen voting age population.”

“Block level” refers to the geographical units that make up the basis of the decennial census. It’s the level of granularity provided in the data that states use for redistricting every 10 years. “Citizen voting age population” or “CVAP” is the type of data that’s been sought by conservative advocates, who have pushed for the redistricting overhaul that would counteract the demographic changes that are currently benefiting Democrats.............................................

Trump spews lies, insults, and conspiracy theories in New Hampshire rally

Donald Trump’s Thursday night rally in New Hampshire was more of the same: self-serving lies, nasty insults (and misdirected ones, at that), and a plea for Republicans not to abandon him in 2020 in the guise of a threat and a brag. “You have no choice but to vote for me because your 401(k), everything is going to be down the tubes,” Trump insisted. “Whether you love me or hate me, you’ve got to vote for me.”

Trump asked supporters to believe him about the threat to their 401(k)s even as he lied about natural gas plants being built in Pennsylvania and Louisiana, taking credit for projects planned long before he even started running for president; again falsely claimed that China is “eating” his tariffs when in fact U.S. consumers are paying them; claimed credit for the Veterans Choice Program, which passed in 2014; and exaggerated his Electoral College victory, a number you would think he’d get right given how often he cites it.

Trump also falsely claimed he lost New Hampshire in 2016 due to fraud, saying ...............................

The Pentagon inspector general issued a report to Congress saying that the Islamic State is again growing in power in Syria and Iraq, with approximately 14,000 to 18,000 militants.
The report specifically said President Donald Trump's decision to rapidly draw down troops in Syria and pull diplomatic staff from Iraq increased instability and allowed the militants to regroup.
Former Special Presidential Envoy Brett McGurk, who resigned following the drawdown announcement, has repeatedly warned of this scenario, saying that Trump's policies would lead to chaos and "an environment for extremists to thrive."

................................................

The Department of Defense's quarterly report to Congress on the effectiveness of the US Operation Inherent Resolve mission said that "ISIS continued its transition from a territory-holding force to an insurgency in Syria, and it intensified its insurgency in Iraq" — even though Trump said ISIS was defeated and the caliphate quashed, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Many officials and experts have repeatedly warned that a rapid US withdrawal from Syria would enable ISIS to regroup into an insurgency after their battlefield defeats by the US-led coalition. ..............................................................

Wendy's manager reportedly suspended after claiming local area has 'no talent pool' to hire from: 'Most are recovering addicts'

This wasn’t the response a frustrated customer was likely expecting.

When a Massachusetts man recently complained in an email to Wendy’s about a bad experience at the Wareham location, he received a strange response. The district manager allegedly replied that the town had “little to no talent pool” to hire from because many people in the area were "recovering addicts."

Customer Matthew Rose has since posted an image of the email exchange on Facebook.

“My name is Keith and I’m the DM for the Wendy’s in Wareham. I apologize for your experiences at this location. Not an excuse but the town of Wareham has little to no talent pool to hire from. This is an ongoing issue in that area," the reply note read.......................

I try not complain on here that much but this is ridiculous. I have recently made a formal complaint about our local Wendy's after numerous problems with that location and here is the DMs response.
It seems the DM has very little appreciation for our town or the people in it.

UPDATE:
So I just spoke with a Coley O'Brien who is the Chief People Officer for Wendy's. The conversation was definately productive. I honestly believe that as a company they are definately sorry for the actions of the DM. He stated that the DM is suspended pending an internal investigation. He seemed to agree that his views on the community could have had an affect on the condition and operation of that store. He also told me that they have team members and leaders throughout the company who have "overcome hardships" in there lives and are valued members of there brand. At this point I told him I look forward to seeing how they continue and show improvement within our community. He is also reaching out to the town admistrator to further help in changing the public's view of the company.

Cropping out ‘Immigrants Welcome,’ Ken Cuccinelli takes selfie with replica Statue of Liberty before removing it from DHS headquarters

Despite widespread outcry after saying the U.S. should only welcome immigrants who “can stand on their own two feet” and that Statue of Liberty was only meant to welcome Europeans to U.S. shores, President Donald Trump’s top immigration official Ken Cuccinelli had a replica of the famous monument removed from the Department of Homeland Security’s grounds on Thursday—but not before snapping a quick selfie.

The statue, made by artist Cesar Maxit, had been placed in front of DHS headquarters by the social justice groups United We Dream and MoveOn on Wednesday.

MoveOn and United We Dream, however, noted that Cuccinelli cropped a sign afixed to the statue that read “Immigrants Welcome” out of his selfie.

The groups said that Cuccinelli’s words and actions this week, including the removal of the replica hours later, reflected the same xenophobic views that have become pervasive in the Trump administration.

“MoveOn and United We Dream brought the statue back to pay tribute to it as a symbol of welcome—and to honor the actual famed words written on the pedestal of the real statue: ‘Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free’—words that Cuccinelli intentionally butchered the day before while defending Trump’s bigoted policies,” MoveOn said in a statement.

Corinne Ball, campaign director for MoveOn, said the removal of the replica served as “a direct representation of the Trump administration’s policy towards immigrants and American values.”.............................................

Trump humiliates his press secretary by immediately contradicting her claims about Israel barring Omar and Tlaib

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham on Thursday claimed that President Donald Trump did not put pressure on Israel’s government to bar Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from entering their country.

However, the president blew up her claims just one hour later by sending out a tweet telling Israel to bar Tlaib and Omar.

CNN’s eagle-eyed fact checker Daniel Dale noticed that Grisham at roughly 9 a.m. on Thursday told reporters that “the Israeli government can do what it wants,” while going on to describe reports that Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop Omar and Tlaib “inaccurate.”

At around 10 a.m., however, Trump sent out a tweet that explicitly warned Israel against letting the two congresswomen in.

“It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep. Tlaib to visit,” the president wrote. “They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!”......................
