But with that federal aid having expired, Krugman adds, the “coronavirus slump” could deepen and go from bad to worse.
“The suffering among cut-off families will be immense, but there will also be broad damage to the economy as a whole,” Krugman warns. “How big will this damage be? I’ve been doing the math, and it’s terrifying.”
The economist continues, “Unlike affluent Americans, the mostly low-wage workers whose benefits have just been terminated can’t blunt the impact by drawing on savings or borrowing against assets. So, their spending will fall by a lot. Evidence on the initial effects of emergency aid suggests that the end of benefits will push overall consumer spending — the main driver of the economy — down by more than 4 %…. The expiration of emergency aid could produce a 4% to 5% fall in GDP.
According to Krugman, the coronavirus pandemic decreased GDP by “around 10%” in the U.S. — and without help for the unemployed, it will fall even more.
“What we’re looking at now may be another shock, a sort of economic second wave, almost as severe in monetary terms as the first,” Krugman argues. “And unlike the pandemic, this shock will be entirely self-generated, brought on by the fecklessness of President Trump and — let’s give credit where it’s due — Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader.”

Public health officials said Friday 2,084 new cases were logged during the last 24-hour period, and another 21 people with COVID-19 had died. The last time the newly confirmed case number surpassed 2,000 was May 24, when the state reported 2,508 cases. Officials also placed 13 of the state’s 102 counties at coronavirus “warning level.”
Meanwhile, Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Friday announced his administration is filing new emergency rules to require businesses to enforce mask requirements that include the possibility of fines up to $2,500.
Businesses that don’t comply will be given a written notice warning. If they don’t voluntarily comply, businesses will then be given an order for patrons to leave the property “as needed to comply with public health guidance and reduce risks,” Pritzker’s office said. If businesses still do not comply, they can receive a class A misdemeanor, subject to a fine of $75 to $2,500.

A preliminary check of Kanye West’s paperwork to get on the Illinois presidential ballot indicates the rap artist may fall far short of the required number of signatures to appear before home-state voters on Nov. 3.
To make the ballot, West had to file 2,500 valid signatures from Illinois voters. He submitted 3,218 signatures, but a state elections board review Friday found that 60% of them, or 1,928, were invalid.
West’s lawyers can try to restore the disputed signatures by providing evidence and arguments. That’s likely to be a difficult task, however.
The Chicago-raised rapper and businessman’s late bid for the White House is viewed as an attempt to take Black votes away from Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Forbes reported that West acknowledged as much in an interview published Thursday.

Friday’s preliminary findings go to a hearing examiner, who is assigned to make a recommendation on whether West should stay on the ballot. That recommendation is expected in about 10 days. Then, the Illinois State Board of Elections votes on the recommendation, potentially at its Aug. 21 meeting.

Kanye West's Presidential run just got a death blow, at least in Illinois, where election officials say more than half his submitted signatures are invalid ... and that means he's off the ballot.
TMZ broke the story ... multiple people stepped up to object after Kanye submitted his petition to get on the ballot in his home state. That triggered a review -- from the State Board of Elections -- of all the 3,128 signatures on his documents.
The tally is in, and 1,928 were ruled invalid ... which leaves Ye way more than a thousand short of the 2,500 needed to be a Presidential candidate on the state's ballots. What we don't know is what was wrong with the bad ones.
It could be any number of issues -- fake names, fake addresses, unregistered voters in Illinois -- or even simply an illegible signature.

The last fully intact ice shelf in the Canadian Arctic has collapsed, losing more than 40 percent of its area in just two days at the end of July, researchers said on Thursday.
The Milne Ice Shelf is at the fringe of Ellesmere Island, in Nunavut.
“Above normal air temperatures, offshore winds and open water in front of the ice shelf are all part of the recipe for ice shelf break up,” the Canadian Ice Service said on Twitter when it announced the loss on Sunday.
“Entire cities are that size. These are big pieces of ice,” said Luke Copland, a glaciologist at the University of Ottawa who was part of the research team studying the Milne Ice Shelf.
The shelf’s area shrank by about 80 square kilometers. By comparison, the island of Manhattan in New York covers roughly 60 square kilometers.
“This was the largest remaining intact ice shelf, and it’s disintegrated, basically,” Copland said.....................................................
