Protesters Gather Outside Of Postmaster General's D.C. Home As Threats To Mail-In Voting Loom

Source: dcist.com

A group of protesters gathered Saturday morning outside the Kalorama home of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, loudly condemning him as delays and funding shortfalls threaten November’s mail-in ballot initiatives.

Videos shared on social media show protesters making noise with horns, bells, and clanging pots and pans, and shouting “stand up, fight back” among other chants. The demonstration was organized by the local advocacy group ShutDownDC.

ShutdownDC said it organized the “early morning noise demonstration to give him a much needed wakeup call.” The protest follows DeJoy’s recent cuts to the Postal Service — including a ban preventing employees from working overtime and making extra trips — that have resulted in delays and backlogs in mail delivery. The Postal Service has also recently decommissioned sorting machines.

DeJoy, a major donor to President Trump and other Republicans, said many of these actions were needed because the service is facing an $11 billion shortfall.

But election officials and lawmakers from both parties have expressed concerns that the Trump administration is purposely thwarting attempts by states to widen voting by mail during the pandemic. Trump acknowledged as much on Thursday, saying that the Postal Service would not be able to handle all of the absentee ballots without a large infusion of funds, which he opposes................................

Georgia's Stone Mountain Park, known for its giant rock carvings of Confederate leaders, closed to the public Saturday over concerns about a planned white nationalist rally and counterprotest.

The city of Stone Mountain, about 25 miles northeast of Atlanta, announced the closure in a tweet on Friday.

"The City of Stone Mountain is anticipating and preparing for at least two opposing groups of protesters whose intentions are to demonstrate at Stone Mountain Park on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Stone Mountain Park has made the decision to close the Park on this day," the city said.

Opposing groups meanwhile faced off in the city's downtown on Saturday morning, according to NBC affiliate WXIA in Atlanta. A video showed people chanting "Go home, racists, go home."...........................

Postal service seen hauling mailboxes away in trucks as Trump's pick to lead USPS makes controversial changes before election

USPS says removing mailboxes 'shouldn't affect people at all' as residents warn they are losing access to no-contact mailing options amid the coronavirus pandemic

New reports of US Postal Service workers hauling away mailboxes in flatbed trucks and locking shut convenient drop slots have caused widespread concerns among Oregon residents about mail-in voting during the presidential election in November.

Photos that spread across social media in recent weeks showed truck beds stacked with dropbox mailboxes — large, blue Postal Service boxes in which mail can be dropped off on the side of the road without having to visit a Post Office.

The Postal Service confirmed some mailboxes have been removed from neighbourhoods in recent weeks, The Oregonian reported, with residents in Eugene and Portland alerting the local newspaper their access to contactless USPS mailing options have become increasingly limited just ahead of the crucial vote.

Ernie Swanson, spokesperson for the USPS, told the publication that “duplicate” boxes were being removed from regions with multiple collection boxes, alleging “first-class mail volume has declined significantly in the US, especially since the pandemic” and noting how that “translates to less mail in collection boxes”.

While the USPS spokesperson said the removal of some mailboxes “shouldn’t affect people at all”, residents said they were quickly losing access to ways they can send mail without potentially risking their health amid the coronavirus pandemic. .....................................................

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) this week sent a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy demanding answers about the removal of more than a dozen blue post office drop boxes across the state, as Democrats fear the Trump administration is seeking to sabotage the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ahead of an expected surge in mail voting this November.

In his letter, Tester pointed to media reports and warnings from the Montana Postal Workers Union about the removal and planned removal of drop boxes.

“If true, this seems to be occurring without any transparency or communication with impacted Montanans,” Tester wrote.

“The United States Postal Service plays a critical role in America, and its services are needed now more than ever, particularly in our rural communities where local access to grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential services are often limited to nonexistent. These reported actions would cause harm to those who rely on the USPS for the delivery of medicine and distribution of benefits.”

Tester said his office has received reports of drop boxes being removed from Bozeman and Lewistown and plans for removals in Billings. He asked DeJoy to respond to these reports by Aug. 18.............................

CREW Requests USPS Records on Louis DeJoy's Conflicts

Glad to see this. Missed it earlier.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has financial interest in USPS contractors that reportedly exceeds $30 million, raising questions of conflicts of interest. And to date, the USPS has not released DeJoy’s ethics agreement. We’ve launched an investigation.

CREW Requests USPS Records on Louis DeJoy’s Conflicts

August 11, 2020

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has financial interest in USPS contractors that reportedly exceeds $30 million, raising questions of conflicts of interest. Additionally, DeJoy appears to continue to have unresolved conflicts with Amazon, a major USPS competitor. To date, the USPS has not released DeJoy’s ethics agreement, despite intense public interest in whether he will recuse himself from matters relating to those interests or whether he will divest them.

CREW has requested records from USPS asking for DeJoy’s ethics agreement, screening arrangement, and any other records related to his recusals or divestitures.

DeJoy is a Trump appointee who made over $2.2 million in political donations to the Republican National Convention and Trump campaign in 2016 alone. Given Trump’s continual bashing of voting by mail, DeJoy’s appointment raised concerns that he would implement measures that would make it harder for voters to vote by mail in November. These concerns have alarmingly manifested with recent reports that DeJoy administered policies that have slowed USPS operations—including mail delivery—and “reassigned or displaced” 23 USPS executives last week.

Let's be clear: the Constitution grants the states sole authority to conduct federal elections. Hobbling the US Postal Service is therefore illegal interference in an election.

Remember the “Left Behind” series,................

...................

............

White evangelicalism is in decline, but another movement is rising to take its place, a movement that scratches that same right-wing itch towards false piety and elaborate tribalist mythologies that are incomprehensible to outsiders: QAnon.

Yes, QAnon, the bizarre paranoid conspiracy theory that holds (more or less) that behind the scenes of observable reality lies a shadowy worldwide pedophile ring run by Democrats and prominent celebrities, and that Trump’s bizarre and self-serving authoritarian behavior is actually an elaborate ruse to hide his secret fight to destroy this elite child-abuse conspiracy.

QAnon has grown rapidly since it first emerged in 2017, morphing from an online conspiracy theory to an explosive political and cultural phenomenon, one that can probably be considered a cult — although it lacks leaders in any conventional sense. While there hasn’t been systematic research into how many Americans are QAnoners, an NBC News study earlier this month discovered that QAnon accounts on Facebook have more than 3 million followers.

An estimated 20 QAnon adherents are running for congressional office this year.
One of them, Marjorie Taylor Greene, just won a primary race for the Republican nomination in a Georgia district that is nearly certain to go red in November, in a landslide that suggests, at the very least, that her wacky beliefs didn’t scare off Republican voters. While some Republicans have publicly expressed reservations about Greene — who has apparently made racist comments and used sexist slurs — Donald Trump just called her a “future Republican Star”.

It’s a measure of our bizarre political climate that the Trump campaign sees QAnon as the future, but it’s hardly a surprise. Trump hasn’t been shy about courting QAnon followers, frequently retweeting its adherents (while later suggesting he doesn’t know much about it).
But this public endorsement of a QAnon candidate brings the public embrace of the movement to the next level. Now Trump’s campaign is publicly attacking at least one Republican congressman who committed the sin of criticizing QAnon, with Trump’s deputy communications director arguing that the “real” conspiracy theory is the Russian collusion story. (That’s actually true, even if Team Trump has the story upside down.)....................
