Special counsel Jack Smith urges Supreme Court to reject Trump’s claim of immunity

Special counsel Jack Smith urged the Supreme Court on Monday to reject Donald Trump’s claims of sweeping immunity and to deny the former president any opportunity to delay a trial on charges that he attempted to subvert the results of the 2020 election.

Trump’s position, Smith told the court, has no grounding in the Constitution, the nation’s history or Americans’ understanding that presidents are not above the law.

“The Framers never endorsed criminal immunity for a former President, and all Presidents from the Founding to the modern era have known that after leaving office they faced potential criminal liability for official acts,” Smith told the court.

Smith’s filing landed in what has emerged as the most closely watched case of the Supreme Court’s current term. A broad ruling for Trump could undermine not only the special counsel’s election subversion case, but a litany of other criminal charges pending against him.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments April 25, and a decision is expected by July. Trump’s written reply to Smith is due next week. .........................

Trump's abortion stance prompts pushback from Lindsey Graham as others rally behind former president

Source: fox news

'I respectfully disagree with President Trump’s statement that abortion is a states’ rights issue,' says Graham

A top Republican senator and Trump-endorser is among those criticizing the former president over his Monday announcement on abortion, in which he claimed restrictions on the procedure should be decided by individual states.

"I respectfully disagree with President Trump’s statement that abortion is a states’ rights issue," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said in a statement on Monday morning.

Trump made his much-anticipated announcement in a video the same day, stating his belief that the states should legislate their own limitations on abortion rather than the federal government.

Saying prosecutors should focus on Antifa, judge frees white supremacist in beating

Source: usa today

Will Carless April 8, 2024

In his sentencing memo Thursday, U.S. District Judge Cormac J. Carney made it clear why he was letting Tyler Laube off lightly.

It wasn’t just because of what Laube did or didn’t do – the defendant had already confessed to beating a journalist at a 2017 Southern California rally and pleaded guilty to violating riot laws as part of a white-supremacist gang.

Laube deserved a light sentence, Carney said, because prosecutors should have focused on leftist groups.

In a 22-page memo, Carney repeatedly said prosecutors have “ignored” violence committed by Antifa and instead focused on targeting people like Laube — Trump supporters and members of the far-right.

“Sentencing Mr. Laube to additional incarceration would only increase the disparity between his punishment and the lack of punishment (and prosecution) members of far-left groups who have committed the same violent conduct received,” Carney wrote. The sentence: time served, 35 days, rather than the six months prosecutors had sought.

The same day Laube received his light sentence at the federal courthouse in Santa Ana, the largest-ever prosecution of members of Antifa in American history was going to trial just 89 miles away. .......................................

Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes to get $600K 'retention bonus' after company lost $58 million

Trump Media & Technology Group may have lost $4 billion in value since the stock plummeted on reports the company makes no money, but that hasn't kept the company's executives from raking in big salaries, bonuses and stock options as investors and analysts question the long-term viability of the parent company of Truth Social.

Stock in the now-public technology company launched on Monday at $79.38 before going into a freefall all week and ending Friday at $40.49.

A substantial reason for the collapse was attributed to an auditor's report that the company lost $58 million last year while only generating $4 million in revenue.

According to a deep dive into executive compensation at the company, the Washington Post is reporting that CEO and president Devin Nunes, who left Congress to take a position with the fledgling company, is doing well despite the company's struggles.

According to the report, Nunes made $750,000 in base salary last year which was bumped to a solid $1 million this year. Along with a grant of 115,000 shares of stock in the company worth approximately $4.6 million, Nunes is also in line for a hefty bonus for sticking around after the massive 2023 losses.....................................................

A photo of our First Lady-- Dr. Jill Biden from the 1970's.......

I recognize her by her eyes. I had not seen this lovely picture till now.

WOW! Jill Biden looks unrecognisable in this 1970s snap which she tweeted in August 2020, with a caption saying "She'll always be that girl from Philly."

DENVER (KDVR) — A Southwest Airlines flight safely returned to Denver International Airport early Sunday after the engine cowling fell off and struck the wing flap during takeoff, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was headed for William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. It was towed to the gate after landing.

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. MDT.

The engine cowling is a removable metal covering on the engine.

Southwest Airlines told FOX31 that customers on the original plane were transferred to another aircraft that was set to arrive in Houston around three hours behind schedule.
