Audio recordings of James Crumbley's allegedly threatening jail calls released

Source: Detroit Free Press

Tresa Baldas Gina Kaufman 11.25 p.m. April 11, 2024

Days after James Crumbley was sentenced to prison for his role in his son's deadly Oxford High School shooting, authorities released audio recordings of jailhouse calls in which Crumbley allegedly threatened Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.

Editor’s note: The calls were edited by the Free Press to remove curse words.

In one of the calls, he acknowledges that he is being recorded by jail authorities — but rants anyway, stating:

"Yeah, Karen McDonald. You're going down. Yeah you stupid bitches at the f------ jail, go ahead. Record this call. send it to Karen McDonald. Tell her how James Crumbley is going to f------ take her down. She will not have a law license when I get done with her. Karen McDonald will be working at f------ McDonalds ... cause she ain't gonna be able to get a f------ job anywhere else."

The calls date back to 2022, and include profanity-laced tirades such as: "She really got it coming to her when I f------ get out" and, "Your ass is going down and you better be f------ scared.”

An investigator with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office who has reviewed the recordings wrote in a report:.......................................................................

I initially had very mixed feelings about the parents getting these long sentences.
But in reading this article and these quote below--they--or the father is a dangerous man --
His words could lead others to all forms of violence--verbal or other wise.
Which made me think--umm.. just like Trump--

"Crumbley's lawyer, Mariell Lehman, has maintained that James Crumbley was never threatening to physically harm McDonald, but only venting his frustrations over how she handled his case, and that he wanted to see her eventually lose her law license."

Trumpeting his support of law enforcement, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed bills on Friday that will limit the authority of police civilian review boards and restrict bystanders from getting too close to officers during investigations.

HB 601 bars citizen review boards from investigating allegations of officer misconduct. The review boards can continue to operate but only in an advisory role that provides input on policies and procedures, not individual officer actions.

The other measure (SB 184) creates a 25-foot buffer around police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel when they are working. Bystanders who disregard a verbal warning and approach with an intent to interfere, harass or threaten could be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.

Backed by a line of officers, DeSantis touted both measures as creating a better climate for law enforcement and accused other states of fomenting hostility toward the police...................

Kamala Harris hammers Trump on abortion in Arizona visit

Source: nbc news

The state’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that an 1864 near-total ban on abortion is enforceable.

By Megan Lebowitz and Zoë Richards

Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday went after former President Donald Trump in a visit to Arizona highlighting reproductive rights just days after the state's Supreme Court ruled that an 1864 near-total abortion ban is enforceable.

Harris slammed Trump over his record and rhetoric on abortion, calling him the “architect of this healthcare crisis,” as the court ruling brings the vital swing state to the forefront of abortion politics.

“President Donald Trump hand-picked three members of the United States Supreme Court because he intended for them to overturn Roe, and as he intended they did,” she said in Tucson.

Harris also pointed to Trump's previous comments about how women who seek abortions should be punished.

"Joe Biden and I trust women to know what is in their own best interest," the vice president said. "And women trust all of us, to fight to protect their most fundamental freedoms. So Arizona, this November, up and down the ballot, reproductive freedom is at stake and you have the power to protect it with your vote.".....................................

There is LONG article in the Atlantic today about Gaetz:

Matt Gaetz Is Winning

But what’s the prize he’s after?

................

Earlier this week, McCarthy lashed out at Gaetz, telling an interviewer that he’d been ousted from the speakership because “one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old, an ethics complaint that started before I ever became speaker. And that’s illegal, and I’m not gonna get in the middle of it. Now, did he do it or not? I don’t know. But Ethics was looking at it. There’s other people in jail because of it. And he wanted me to influence it.”

In response, Gaetz posted on X: “Kevin McCarthy is a liar. That’s why he is no longer speaker.”....................................

..................From there, the TV invites flooded in. Gaetz would go on any network to talk about anything as long as the broadcast was live and he knew the topic ahead of time. He had become a loud Trump defender—introducing a resolution to force Special Counsel Robert Mueller to resign and even joining an effort to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. A white board in his office displayed a list of media outlets and two columns of numbers: how many hits Gaetz wanted to do each week at any given outlet and how many he’d already completed. Around his office, he liked to quote from one of his favorite movies, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, in a faux southern accent: “We ain’t one-at-a-timin’ here. We’re mass communicating!’’

Soon, the president was calling. Trump asked Gaetz for policy advice, and suggested ways that Gaetz could highlight the MAGA agenda on television. Sometimes, when the president rang and Gaetz wasn’t near the phone, his aides would sprint around the Capitol complex looking for him, in a race against Trump’s short attention span, another former staffer told me. Gaetz claimed in his book that he once even took a call from Trump while “in the throes of passion.”...................

Tennessee Republican's fight against cousin marriage ban ends in massive defeat

Source: raw story

Brad Reed April 11, 2024 1:30PM ET

The dream of legalized cousin marriage ended for one Tennessee state lawmaker on Thursday when his last-ditch bid to block the bill banning the practice went down in defeat.

Local news station WSMV reports that a bill making it illegal to marry your first cousin sailed through the Tennessee House of Representatives on Thursday, with just two members, both Republicans, voting to oppose the measure.

One of those members.....................

In a speech opposing the bill that was posted by the Tennessee Holler's Twitter account, Bulso makes the case that it doesn't seem right that cousins aren't allowed to marry when LGBTQ couples can.

.........................

He then went on to say that, if the concerns about cousin marriage are really about avoiding the increased risk of birth defects, then no one should object to having first cousins of the same sex get married.

'No way that is happening now': Judge Cannon effectively eliminates July trial schedule

U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon effectively eliminated the possibility that former President Donald Trump could go to trial in July for allegedly mishandling classified documents.

In an order on Wednesday, Cannon said Trump had until May 9 to disclose which classified documents he would use for his defense.

Guardian reporter Hugo Lowell pointed out that special counsel Jack Smith had proposed March 18 for Trump to file his notice under Section 5 of the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA).
.......................

....................

"Special Counsel proposed March 18 deadline for Trump to file his Sec 5 notice, in order to get to a July 2024 trial," he added. "No way that is happening now, given deadline is 7 weeks later. But she also didn’t give Trump the June 17 deadline he wanted — so no 11th Circuit ammo either."..............

Jack Smith argues "not a single" Trump official has claimed he declared any records personal

Updated on: April 3, 2024 / 9:17 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Special counsel Jack Smith urged a federal judge to keep a presidential recordkeeping law out of instructions that would be provided to the jury in the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump, according to court documents filed by Smith's team late Tuesday. Prosecutors warned that including the law in the instructions risked jeopardizing the proceedings, and signaled they would appeal the judge's decision if she ruled against them.

Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing the case in Florida, asked Smith's and Trump's legal teams to file jury instructions based on two hypothetical scenarios: in one, the president has the authority under the Presidential Records Act (PRA) to categorize any records as personal. Under this scenario, Cannon wrote that "neither a court nor a jury" would have the ability to review the decision, a finding that could nullify much of the special counsel's case against Trump.

In the other, the jury would be able to examine a record that had been retained by a former president and make a finding that it was either "personal or presidential," under the PRA. Under this scenario, it is possible jurors could find that some official documents were mishandled.

Federal prosecutors rejected both proposals and wrote Tuesday that the PRA — a 1978 law that manages the maintenance of White House documents produced during each presidency — "should not play any role at trial at all," arguing that Trump's alleged mishandling of classified records occurred after his presidency ended................................
