Trump inauguration will feature shorter parade so the new president can get 'some work done' before ceremonial balls

President Barack Obama's parades took up some two hours of his day
Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidential library says his 1957 event took three and a half hours to complete
'This is going to be a shorter parade, an hour to hour and a half or so so he can go to work,' a spokesman for Donald Trump's inaugural committee says
Trump is doing away with much of the pomp and circumstance the Obamas added to the agenda in 2009; they attended 11 balls in all to his three
He's taking part in events for five days like the Obama's did his inaguration will be lower key, with fewer celebrities

Orwellian: Scott Walker admin. quietly scrubs mentions of climate from Climate Change website

Source: raw story

David Edwards

26 Dec 2016 at 14:41 ET

Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s administration has removed the word “climate” from a Department of Natural Resources website dedicated to climate change.

Throughout his time as governor of Wisconsin, Walker has taken a series of actions to “reduce the role of science in environmental policymaking and to silence discussion of controversial subjects, including climate change, by state employees,” according to the Scientific American.

Political writer James Rowen reported on Monday that the Walker administration had advanced their war on science by scrubbing information about climate change from a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website that was dedicated to explaining how the agency would deal with a warming planet.

The DNR page titled “climatechange.html” originally acknowledged that “[h]uman activities that increase heat–trapping (‘green house’) gases are the main cause [of global warming.] Earth´s average temperature has increased 1.4 °F since 1850 and the eight warmest years on record have occurred since 1998.”.........................

Publicly Available Information Appears to Put Giuliani at the Center of a Watergate-Level Conspiracy

It’s surprising that Rudy Giuliani has been out of the news lately, given that, as recently as November 7th, Donald Trump was planning on offering him a Cabinet position.
..................................

The most likely answer for Comey’s uncharacteristic behavior? Again, Rudy Giuliani.

Per a CNN report, on October 28th Rudy Giuliani went on the Lars Larson radio program and confessed that current agents in the FBI had committed Hatch Act violations to get him information about the ongoing Clinton investigation. Specifically, wrote CNN, “the former mayor said he was in contact with former agents ‘and a few active agents, who obviously don’t want to identify themselves.’” Giuliani wasn’t even being especially coy; he was quite clearly indicating that the reason the current FBI agents who’d spoken to him didn’t want to identify themselves was because their contact with him had been illegal.

The next day, Giuliani tried to walk back this very explicit claim of being the recipient of Hatch Act-violative leaks. He’d only been speaking with former FBI agents, he now maintained to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. His reference to “a few active agents who obviously don’t want to identify themselves,” and his careful distinction of those agents from the former agents he’d also been speaking to, was just a slip-up, he said. In fact—exhibiting, suddenly, a remarkably clear memory as to whom he’d spoken to and when—he said he hadn’t spoken to a current FBI agent in “ten months.”

Unfortunately, no one was buying it.

Indeed, multiple Congressmen almost immediately called for a Congressional investigation into what Giuliani knew and when he knew it. Meanwhile, the Clinton campaign proposed that the Inspector General of the FBI should investigate the matter.

............................

So did the rank-and-file FBI agents in the New York field office of the FBI have a motive to use Giuliani’s friends as an intermediary to illegally feed confidential information to the Trump campaign? Absolutely, says Giuliani. Asked on November 4th, on Fox & Friends, about whether he had heard about the “reopening” of the Clinton investigation prior to James Comey announcing it publicly, Giuliani replied, “Did I hear about it? You’re darn right I heard about it. And I can’t even repeat the language that I heard from the former FBI agents.” ............................

If this seems to you like something Giuliani maybe shouldn’t have said publicly, you’re right. But in fact he’d slipped up far worse in his conversation with Fox & Friends on November 4th.

Speaking of Comey’s announcement that “new” evidence had been found in the Clinton investigation, Giuliani told Fox News, “I had expected this for the last, honestly, to tell you the truth, I thought it was going to be about three or four weeks ago” (emphasis supplied).

“Three or four weeks ago”—of course. Because “three or four weeks ago” is when the New York field office of the FBI had found the “new” Clinton emails on Anthony Wiener’s server. It was “three or four weeks ago” that these same agents had begun a widely reported 24-day campaign to hide this information from Director Comey—the better to ensure that any leak of the information would cause maximum pre-election damage to the Clinton campaign. Had the “new” information held by these rank-and-file agents leaked to the media in the first week of October, it would have had little to no impact on the election. Instead, the agents’ deliberate delay in sending this information up the chain of command forced Comey to reveal the information at the very end of October—thereby creating a story that exploded like a political hand grenade over the entire first week of November.

Giuliani’s slip on Fox News thus helps us establish the timeline
for a possible conspiracy between the FBI and the Trump campaign to illegally leak FBI evidence and swing the presidential election to Trump:..........................

Ryan’s disingenuous ‘repeal and delay’ plan for Obamacare

By Jennifer Rubin

December 21

Paul D. Ryan speaks at a news conference. (Jim Lo Scalzo/European Pressphoto Agency)

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) seems to be feeling the heat from members of Congress, the press and outside groups (such as hospitals) who object to pulling the plug on Obamacare and not telling Americans, health-care providers and insurance companies what comes next. In an obviously defensive email blast, Ryan’s office asserts:

Obamacare is hurting families, and before things get worse, we will act to repeal it so that we can bring relief as soon as possible.

Once Obamacare is repealed, we will make sure there is a stable transition period so that people don’t have the rug pulled out from under them. One key to ensuring a smooth transition is getting House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price, M.D. (R-GA) confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Working together, we will focus on delivering relief and a better system for people struggling under Obamacare.
..........................

Ryan’s office has just made the case against repeal and delay.
If you have a terrific plan and Obamacare is hurting people (hurting them so much that they won’t mind losing it without knowing what they will get instead), then repeal and replace it now. Moreover, Republicans are whistling through the graveyard if they think President-elect Donald Trump will go along with this once the letters come pouring in detailing the hardship and uncertainty Trump’s working-class voters are experiencing as Ryan promises to repeal what they have but won’t tell them what they’ll get. We know Trump lacks ideological coherence; that makes him particularly susceptible to individual horror stories and complaints from his fans that those mean Republicans (whom Trump vilified in the campaign) are mistreating them — again.

The GOP charade will become unsustainable at some point. ............................

Rather than send out specious emails to get through the news cycle, Ryan should be straight with his members. Is he expecting them to face the voters in 2018 with no replacement plan passed? If so, this is political suicide. And he should answer the real concern of patients, doctors and hospitals: Why not pass what you think is better than Obamacare at the same time you repeal it? It is unreasonable to expect insurance companies, medical providers and ordinary Americans to operate on the hope and the prayer that there will be something better, cheaper and more sustainable — sometime in the future.

Jewish Family Flees County After Fox News, Breitbart Falsely Blame It for Cancellation of Christmas

Source: Slate

A Jewish family whose child attends an elementary school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania has fled the county out of fear for its safety following false reports on Fox News and Breitbart implying that the family forced the school to cancel a Christmas

Centerville Elementary School has put on a production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for years, but educators have grown concerned that the play requires 20 hours of classroom time to produce. Changing state educational standards no longer allow for that luxury, Principal Tom Kramer noted in a post explaining why the school had cancelled the play. Educators also called off the production because they wished “to be respectful of the many cultural and religious backgrounds represented by the students.” (A Christmas Carol is unmistakably Christian.)

By coincidence, a Jewish family had requested that their child be excused from performing in the play back in September. They did not complain or ask that the play be cancelled, and the school insists that their request had nothing to do with the decision to cancel the production. But as Breitbart and Fox News’ Todd Starnes reported the story, “unnamed parents” complained about the line “God bless us, every one” and essentially forced the school to scrap the play.

These untrue claims fit neatly into both outlets’ “War on Christmas” narrative—and, as intended, sparked outrage among readers. “It would be nice if we had the addresses of those concerned citizens and, I bet, this info is known to people living in the area,” one commenter wrote in response to the Breitbart story. Several commenters posted the address of the school, and a self-professed white nationalist urged others to “take action.”

Lancaster Online reports that the Jewish parents who asked to excuse their child from the play were so unnerved by these reactions that they pulled their child out of school and fled the county. “There’s no way we’re going to take a chance after the pizza incident,” one parent said, referring to the man who fired his assault rifle in a pizza restaurant after reading fake news stories alleging that the pizzeria housed a child sex ring run by Hillary Clinton. The parents say their child was also harassed by classmates after the school canceled the play in November....................................

Obama just made it much harder for Trump to build his Muslim registry

Instead of reanimating a Bush-era registration program, Trump will have to go back to square one.

For nine years, from 2002 to 2011, a version of one of Donald Trump’s most extreme proposals was standard US government policy: requiring certain people in the US on visas from Muslim-majority countries to register with the government.

President Barack Obama suspended the program in 2011 — after years of complaints by civil rights groups that the program targeted Muslims and wasn’t effective in preventing terrorism. But it had never been fully dismantled — it was still sitting around for the Trump administration to dust off.

Until now.

On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security published a regulation that would totally get rid of the National Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) — forcing the Trump administration to take the time to create something new, and giving civil rights groups an opportunity to stop them.

The regulation goes into effect Friday, December 22, well before President Trump is inaugurated. So when his administration takes office — if it’s serious about finding a way to register people from Muslim-majority countries in the US — it’s going to have to find another way to do it.

Some Dems resist new Russia select committee

Source: Politico

12/22/16 05:14 AM EST

The bipartisan push for a special congressional committee to investigate Russian meddling in the election is running into a new hurdle: Senate Democrats.

Several members of the party, particularly those on the Intelligence Committee, are noncommittal about setting up a new select committee specifically devoted to cybersecurity that would also investigate Russian influence on the presidential election. Instead, some Democrats will wait to see whether Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) will follow through on his pledge to “expeditiously” investigate the electronic break-ins and preside over public hearings about the matter.

Democrats are also protecting their turf. Intelligence Committee members have little to gain right now by breaking with Burr, because they already have access to intelligence briefings that other members are hoping to get access to as part of a broader special panel. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sens. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina are making a bipartisan push for a special select committee to tackle the Russia hacking — and cybersecurity more broadly.

That panel would, under one proposal, take key members from across the various committees with jurisdiction over cybersecurity and create one central clearinghouse for oversight over the Russia hackings as well as cyberthreats from other countries like North Korea and Iran. Schumer, Reed and McCain will all have access to the Intelligence Committee briefings regardless; Reed and McCain are "ex-officio" members of the committee and Schumer will get new intelligence briefings because he is leader of the Democrats. ......................

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), who campaigned for President-elect Donald Trump during his presidential run, has sent his ally a public letter asking him to pave the way for drug testing food stamps recipients before Trump has even assumed office.

“We want your help as soon as possible,” Walker wrote, before outlining specific demands, the first of which is the ability to screen and test people who need food stamps for drug use.

While states have broad authority to change the requirements for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families cash welfare program, and thus 10 states have chosen to drug test applicants and recipients and deny those who refuse the tests or fail them, they currently have no such latitude over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps.

But that hasn’t stopped Walker from signing a measure into law that would drug test SNAP applicants and recipients and then suing the federal government to allow him to carry it out. He’s also asked Congress to pass legislation that would give him the permission he seeks, but a bill put forward to do so failed.

Walker appears to believe, however, that the Trump administration will grant him what he’s looking for. “We…are optimistic your administration will give states like Wisconsin the flexibility to provide the accountability the taxpayers demand,” he wrote in the section requesting the authority to implement drug testing.

While Walker characterized drug testing as “helping the residents of Wisconsin,” evidence from the states that drug test welfare benefits doesn’t make that seem likely.
The drug tests come at taxpayer expense, and so far have totaled nearly $2 million in the states that have active regimes. Proponents have claimed that the cost gets offset by the savings in benefits denied to drug users, yet tests are showing up very few positive results — in 2015, two states uncovered exactly zero...................................
