Homeland Security Still Doesn’t Think Donald Trump’s Immigration Order Will Work

“I look at this, and you know what I think? I think the Muslim ban is dead,” Rachel Maddow said of an internal DHS report.

By Nick Visser , Elise Foley

A second internal Department of Homeland Security report questions the validity of President Donald Trump’s thwarted efforts to bar citizens of predominately-Muslim countries from entering the United States.

.................................

The Huffington Post has reached out to the White House for comment, but DHS spokesman David Lapan confirmed the report’s authenticity..............................

Lapan noted that the information is from open source materials and does not include classified data. “It does not include information from historical or current investigative case data or current intelligence or threat stream data from classified data sets,” he added.

The unreleased draft report is the second to be leaked over the past week. At the end of February, The Associated Press obtained another that stated citizenship is “likely an unreliable indicator of terrorist threat to the United States.” That report, compiled by the same DHS office, was prepared shortly after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked Trump’s controversial executive order.

Together, both assessments directly contradict Trump administration plans to bar potential terrorists from entering the U.S. through a temporary ban on those from seven Muslim-majority countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. ........................

Time to hang this whole Executive Order up!

Trump had said he was going to release his revised Ban on Wednesday but WH decided to hold off on it to bask in the afterglow of his previous night speech.

So, now it is Friday and it is still not out.

Trump Aides Bid To Plug Leaks Creates Unease Among Civil Servants

Source: huff post

POLITICS 03/03/2017 10:12 am ET

Government employees are concerned phone calls and emails are being monitored.

...........Current and former officials said that in a departure from past practice, access to a classified computer system at the White House has been tightened by political appointees to prevent professional staffers from seeing memos being prepared for the new president.

And at the Department of Homeland Security, some officials told Reuters they fear a witch hunt is under way for the leaker of a draft intelligence report which found little evidence that citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries covered by Trump’s now-suspended travel ban pose a threat to the United States.

Washington career civil servants say the clampdown appears designed to try to limit the flow of information inside and outside government and deter officials from talking to the media about topics that could result in negative stories.

Some reports of government dysfunction have infuriated Trump just weeks into his presidency. Trump has described media outlets as “lying”, “corrupt”, “failing” and “the enemy of the American people.”.............................

Hundreds chant 'Coward!' amid Paul Ryan's Rhode Island visit

Mar 2, 2017 Updated 11 hrs ago

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Around 200 people chanted "Coward!" and booed as Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan attended an event in the heavily Democratic state.

A strong police presence kept the crowd across the street from a Providence office building, where Ryan was meeting Thursday with Year Up, a nonprofit career training organization.

Ryan was not seen entering the building, but a motorcade carrying him pulled into an alley, where there's a back entrance, away from protesters.

"We want him to hear loud and clear that his values are Wall Street values, they're not Rhode Island values," said Georgia Hollister Isman, the state director of Rhode Island Working Families. "We're also here in solidarity with our friends in Wisconsin who've been trying for months to get a town hall meeting with him."....................

GOPer: Info On Sessions-Russia Contact 'Should Never' Have Become Public

Source: TPM

March 2, 2017, 6:49 PM EDT

House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) said Thursday that information about Attorney General Jeff Sessions' conversations with a Russian ambassador "should never have made it to the public domain."

"We cannot overlook the fact that the methodology of the collection and the content of that transcript never should have made into the public domain," Gowdy said in an appearance on MSNBC. "And people may like that it did today, because it hurts Republicans, but what it really does is it hurts our country because you are leaking classified information."

He said that "all facets" of Sessions' contacts are important, but the leak particularly so.

"I'm not focused on the leak, but the leak is really, really, important," Gowdy said.

Gowdy also said that "Congress is not equipped to investigate crime."

He called for an investigation of "every facet" of Russia's attempts to interfere with anything "from elections to ..................................................................................

Press Releases 03.02.17
Pelosi Statement on Attorney General Sessions’ Recusal Announcement

Washington, D.C. — Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Attorney General Sessions delivered a public statement announcing he will only narrowly recuse himself from overseeing the investigation of the Trump Campaign:

“Attorney General Sessions’ narrow recusal and his sorry attempt to explain away his perjury are totally inadequate. He is clearly trying to maintain his ability to control the larger investigation into the sprawling personal, political and financial grip Russia has on the Trump Administration.

“Attorney General Sessions’ lies to the Senate and to the American people make him unfit to serve as the chief law enforcement officer of our country. He must resign immediately.”
