GOP leaders to #AHCA holdouts: "Relax, the Senate will save you." Senate: Nope.

Lots of comments from Reps in article. But in the end--they-the Reps will be judged on how they vote on the House bill (if it does get a vote and arms being twisted--including Pence doing the twisting. Please call your Reps-and get others to do so if you have not done so already.

Message To Health Care Holdouts: Relax, The Senate Will Save You

Tierney Sneed contributed reporting.

Republican leaders boasted Tuesday that they are on the cusp of securing the votes needed to repeal the Affordable Care Act, though they have not yet scheduled a mark-up or a vote, and several high-profile members have defected over the past few days.

As leaders pressure and cajole the remaining holdouts to fall in line, several lawmakers confirmed that one argument they are using is an assurance that the Senate will strip out many of the bill’s most controversial provisions.

“I tell people not to get too worked up. If we do get it out of here, it’s going to the United States Senate, so don’t think it’s coming back here looking like it did when we sent it over,” Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), the vice chair of the powerful Rules Committee, told reporters. “I think people sweat these details way too much at this stage in the game.”

Cole said his message to GOP moderates—who are hesitant to back the bill due to its deep cuts to Medicaid and rollback of protections for people with pre-existing conditions—is: “If you want the pressure off, kick it over to the Senate and let those guys deal with it for a while.”.......................

Clinton brings up Handmaids Tale in Planned Parenthood speech

Source: the hill

By Cyra Master - 05/02/17 11:22 PM EDT

Speaking at Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary gala Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton brought up the Hulu adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which retells Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel of a remade United States in which women are second-class citizens.

“We come tonight to celebrate the last 100 years, the progress that so many generations have fought so hard for -- and what a time it is to be holding this centennial, just ask those who’ve been watching ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ a book I read and was captivated by years ago,” she said, drawing a low laugh from the crowd.

“Now I am not suggestion this dystopian future is around the corner, but this show has prompted important conversations about women’s rights and autonomy.

“In ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ women’s rights are slowly stripped away. As one character says, ‘We didn’t look up from our phones until it was too late.’

“It is not too late for us,” Clinton added. “But we have to encourage the millions of women and men who support Planned Parenthood to keep fighting.”.............................

Without my interference, Aya Hegazy could have stayed another 28 years in prison: Trump

I am glad she is home safe. His bragging is beyond the pale. I have to wonder what Egypt expects as payback.

During the speech of the US President Donald Trump on his 100th day in office, he mentioned the release of the Egyptian-American activist Aya Hegazy from Egyptian prisons as one of his achievements.

.................................

"For instance," said Trump, "we were proud to quietly work with the Egyptian government last week to ensure that an American citizen – a beautiful young woman named Aya came home after being in an Egyptian prison for the past three years, she was going to be there for another 28 years,” he said.

He pointed out that former president Obama worked diligently for three years but he didn’t get them out; “I met with President Al-Sisi and it worked out quickly and he was great about it, and not only did the court system and President Al-Sisi let her out, but they let her husband, her innocent eight people and they all are back here right now,” he said.

“They won’t include this in my 100 days but I’m very proud that I’ve done it and she’s a happy young woman.. I said: 'How tough, Aya, was in that prison?' She said: 'You don’t want to know',” recounted Trump.

The speech provoked anger among Egyptians, and prompted TV show presenter Lamees Al-Hadidi to urge the Egyptian foreign ministry and state bodies to release an official statement detailing what Trump has said and refuting what she called "inaccuracies" in his statement; because it is damaging to the reputation of the Egyptian regime and judiciary, according to Hadidi.

Conservative Heritage Foundation fires leader Jim DeMint right after Trump called him amazing

Bye bye.

Conservative Heritage Foundation fires leader Jim DeMint right after Trump called him “amazing”
By Oliver Willis | May 2, 2017

The conservative Heritage Foundation has let go its leader Jim DeMint, shortly after Donald Trump lavished him with praise at the National Rifle Association's annual convention. DeMint is the latest leader of the right, along with Fox's Roger Ailes and Bill O'Reilly, to lose their jobs shortly after Trump's reverse Midas touch.

Jim DeMint has been fired as the head of the conservative Heritage Foundation, only days after Donald Trump praised “all of the people” at the foundation and described DeMint’s leadership as “amazing.”

The board of trustees held a meeting Tuesday to vote on DeMint’s future with the foundation and issued statement that “by a unanimous vote, [the board] has asked for and received the resignation of Jim DeMint as president and CEO of the organization.”

The statement goes on to say it was “a difficult and necessary decision,” but gave no specific reasons for DeMint’s firing.

DeMint is the latest conservative leader to receive a Trump endorsement and then find himself out of a job, suggesting Trump may have a reverse Midas touch. Fox News’ Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly were both removed from their jobs shortly after Trump offered his public support of them.

Rep. Cummings busts Pence: I warned the vice president directly about Michael Flynn (NOV letter)

Rep. Cummings busts Pence: “I warned the vice president directly” about Michael Flynn

http://shareblue.com/rep-cummings-busts-pence-i-warned-the-vice-president-directly-about-michael-flynn/

By Tommy Christopher | May 2, 2017

As evidence grows of the White House cover-up of the Michael Flynn scandal, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) has issued a statement that implicates Vice President Mike Pence, who apparently lied to the American people about his involvement.

(AP Photo/Cliff Owen)

..........................

.....................................

In March, Pence claimed that he had “just learned” of payments that Flynn received for his work on behalf of the Turkish government. However, new reports show that the Trump transition team, led by Pence, was aware of Flynn’s work and appointed him to the position anyway. Now Marc T. Short, the White House director for Legislative Affairs and Pence’s longtime aide and family friend, is orchestrating the obstruction of the House Oversight Committee’s investigation of Flynn, which could be incredibly damaging to Pence.

In a statement emailed to Shareblue, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking member of that committee, states that he personally warned Pence about Flynn’s conflicts of interest:

In addition to being in the press in the fall — well after General Flynn’s last background check — I warned the Vice President directly six months ago about the conflicts created by Lt. General Flynn’s company lobbying on behalf of Turkish interests. It is unclear whether the White House heeded my warnings or did any vetting at all, but it’s clear now that they could have prevented the problems that occurred with Lt. General Flynn. Republicans in Congress are doing a disservice to the White House and our national security interests by not conducting rigorous and serious oversight of the Administration, especially to help catch issues early and address them.

Cummings is referring to a letter that he sent Pence in November, during the presidential transition, warning of Flynn’s activities on behalf of a foreign government, and requesting additional information from Pence, as head of the transition team........................................

Trump cheerleads for the torturers: Public adoration for the worst of the worst is taking a buzz

Trump cheerleads for the torturers: Brian Klaas

The fact that Trump is drawn to these brutal dictators sticks out like a sore thumb

Public adoration for the worst of the worst is taking a buzz saw to our soft power.
664109374 A POL GOV USA DC

.......................
I’ve interviewed hundreds of pro-democracy reformers from Belarus to Thailand. Most plead with me to persuade my government — the government of the United States — to provide them with just a bit more support, a bit of hope against an authoritarian tyrant.

They want freedom. They want basic human rights. They want democracy.

The president of the United States is not on their side.

Instead, he consistently sides with the torturers and the oppressors over the tortured and the oppressed. That appalling decision will not only make the world a darker place, it will also damage America’s strategic interests.

President Trump has repeatedly said that “torture works.” He praised Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and said he wished his brutal regime was still in power. Since becoming president, he has praised Russia's Vladimir Putin, an authoritarian despot who murders journalists and dissidents. Trump congratulated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for rigging a referendum that effectively dismantled democracy in Turkey. He invited Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House, even though he has boasted about personally murdering people and is using death squads to kill thousands. Trump embraced Egypt’s military dictator, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, at the White House in April, though Sisi killed at least 900 people in a single day and routinely tortures his opponents.

This week, he praised North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a “smart cookie” whom he would “be honored” to meet. Trump even went so far as to suggest that Kim’s ability to consolidate power in the dynastic dictatorship was “incredible,” even though Kim did so by assassinating relatives and murdering political opponents with flamethrowers and anti-aircraft guns.

...................

This leaves us with a series of uncomfortable truths about the lack of moral values in the White House:

The president of the United States has had harsher words for Meryl Streep and Nordstrom than he has for Putin, Erdogan, Duterte, Sisi and Kim.

Trump attacks our free press as “the enemy of the people” but defends dictators who kill, jail or torture journalists.

He has tweeted about “human rights” only once — to mock them. In comparison, he has tweeted about crowds 248 times and called someone a “dummy” on Twitter 77 times.
