Former Obama aide says Trump lied about past attempts to meet with Kim

Source: The Hill

By Kyle Balluck - 06/30/19 07:51 AM EDT

Ben Rhodes said early Sunday that President Trump was lying when he said the Obama administration repeatedly attempted to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un only to be rebuffed.

"Trump is lying. I was there for all 8 years. Obama never sought a meeting with Kim Jong Un. Foreign policy isn’t reality television it’s reality," Rhodes, who served as former President Obama's deputy national security adviser, tweeted.

"Photo ops don’t get rid of nuclear weapons, carefully negotiated agreements do," added Rhodes, who is now a political commentator. "Trump’s foreign policy is a failure - from NK to Iran to Venezuela."

Trump said earlier Sunday during a news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in that Obama "wanted to meet, and Chairman Kim would not meet him."

"The Obama administration was begging for a meeting. They were begging for meetings constantly. And Chairman Kim would not meet with him," Trump added. .......................................

In NK.. the camera pans to Jared Kushner, Ivanka, and ..Tucker Carlson, as Fox News's Jon Scott

I was just listening to msnbc panal talk about all the folks that Trump brought along on this trip--like it was planned and high stakes. Any one else hear this conversation. Nepotism aglore!

After Trump gets done kissing up to Kim Jong Un, the camera pans to Jared Kushner, Ivanka, and ... [checks notes] Tucker Carlson, as Fox News's Jon Scott claims (falsely) that former North Korean dictator Kim Il-sung is the current president of South Korea.

Democrats charge the president is politicizing the celebration of a nonpartisan holiday meant to honor the nation.

WASHINGTON — On Thursday, the country will celebrate 243 years of independence — but this year's festivities are already setting off a different kind of fireworks.

That's because of President Donald Trump's plan to add more bells and whistles to Washington's usual celebration: music, military demonstrations and — notably — a speech he'll make, likely from the Lincoln Memorial, according to a White House official. The Washington Post reports there may even be an Air Force One flyover.

It's right up the president's alley, and he's encouraging attendees to come with flags in hand, predicting last week in Orlando there will "hundreds of thousands" of people on hand.

But the president's critics accuse him of trying to hijack what is typically a nonpartisan celebration.

Democrats are concerned that the president will use his platform — and taxpayer money — to politicize the day. House leaders, including Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, worry that the events will give an "appearance of a televised, partisan campaign rally on the Mall at public expense," as they put it in a letter to the administration.

"It's not about politics in the partisan sense — it's about democracy, it's about freedom, it's about individual liberties, it's about pursuit of happiness," he added. "Not about politics, not about polarization, not about focusing on differences. It's about one nation under god indivisible. And it's sad that the president's turning it into — in my opinion and the opinion of many — a political rally.”

Andrea Melanger agrees. "I think he just likes to feel celebrated," she said. "And so, you know, it's probably just feeding more of his ego. I don't think we need to spend money on that."

Trump claims his admin "will soon come out with some sort of busing-related policy"

wTF is he blabbering about??

Asked for this thoughts on the busing policy Kamala Harris attacked Joe Biden over at the debate, Trump punts by suggesting, oddly, that his administration will soon come out with some sort of busing-related policy

House Ethics Committee investigating Gaetz over Cohen threats

Source: The Hill

By Cristina Marcos - 06/28/19 01:21 PM EDT

The House Ethics Committee announced Friday that it is formally investigating whether Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) attempted to intimidate President Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen ahead of his testimony to Congress earlier this year.

In a statement, Ethics Committee Chairman Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Rep. Kenny Marchant (Texas), the panel's ranking Republican, said that Gaetz declined their request to appear before the committee for an in-person interview in May.

The Ethics Committee said it told Gaetz that it wouldn't be able to resolve the ethics complaint against him without his testimony and warned that if it couldn't dispose of the complaint by June 24, the rules would require formally opening an investigative subcommittee to review the allegations.

Gaetz defended his refusal to cooperate with the investigation.

"If members of Congress want to spend their time psychoanalyzing my tweets, it’s certainly their prerogative. I won’t be joining them in the endeavor," Gaetz said in a statement Friday..................................

Gaetz Pans New Ethics Probe For ‘Psychoanalyzing My Tweets’ About Michael Cohen

June 28, 2019 2:32 pm

The House Ethics Committee announced Friday that it is opening an investigative subcommittee to look into whether Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) sought to improperly influence or even threaten former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen ahead of Cohen’s February congressional testimony.

The subcommittee was established because Gaetz declined to be interviewed by the committee, according to a committee press release.

Gaetz was blunt in response.

“If members of Congress want to spend their time psychoanalyzing my tweets, it’s certainly their prerogative,” he said in a statement his press secretary sent to TPM. “I won’t be joining them in the endeavor.”

The investigation stems from a tweet Gaetz sent on the eve of Michael Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee in February.

The tweet, since deleted, read: “Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot
