SEOUL, South Korea — The death toll from the coronavirus in the U.S. climbed to six Monday and the disease spread to ever more countries and world capitals, even as new cases in China dropped to their lowest level in six weeks.

A shift in the crisis appeared to be taking shape, as hundreds of patients were released from hospitals at the epicenter of the outbreak in China and the World Health Organization reported that nine times more cases were reported outside the country than inside it over the past 24 hours.

At the same time, the virus popped up for the first time in New York, Moscow and Berlin, and clusters of the disease surged around the world. In the U.S., health officials announced four more people died, bringing the total to six, all in Washington state, where researchers said the virus may have been circulating undetected for weeks.

The global death toll pushed past 3,000, and the number of people infected topped 89,000, with fast-expanding outbreaks in South Korea, Italy and Iran.

Dr. Mike Ryan, the WHO’s chief of emergencies, pointed out that even regions that have taken less aggressive measures than the extraordinary lockdowns implemented by China have managed to keep the virus in check. Ryan said that because COVID-19 is not as easily transmitted as the flu, “it offers us a glimmer … that this virus can be suppressed and contained.”

Around the world, the virus reshaped people’s routines, both at home and at work, from the millions of Japanese schoolchildren facing four weeks without class to special voting booths for Israelis under quarantine. Mobile hospitals were planned in Iran, and the “Mona Lisa” hung in a vacant room of the shuttered Louvre in Paris.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development warned that the world economy could contract this quarter for the first time since the international financial crisis more than a decade ago.

Elizabeth Warren Announces Plan For Swift Federal Action On Coronavirus

I really hope Warren does well tomorrow.

Elizabeth Warren Announces Plan For Swift Federal Action On Coronavirus
She wants free tests and treatment, and paid leave for patients and caregivers.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Monday will lay out a detailed plan for swift federal action to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

The proposed initiative, which Warren’s presidential campaign shared with HuffPost on Sunday evening, is not another item on Warren’s agenda for what she would do if she becomes president.

It is, instead, a list of steps that she would like to see Congress and President Donald Trump take right now, in order to contain the outbreak, to help those affected by it, and to stop the economy from falling into a recession.

Key actions would include making tests and treatments free to anybody who needs them, providing paid leave to people who must miss work or care for relatives, and propping up the economy with about $400 billion in new government spending.

Many of the moves Warren has in mind would mirror actions the federal government has taken to address past outbreaks and pandemic scares, including H1N1 in 2009 and SARS in 2003.

The plan follows up on a broader public health agenda she released when news about the outbreak became prominent in January. It also fleshes out promises Warren has been making in just the past few days, as the outbreak has gained a footing in the U.S. and seized the nation’s attention......................

Devin Nunes ripped to shreds by his constituents in Yelp reviews

Source: raw story

Published 1 min ago on March 2, 2020

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) is known for his dedication to President Donald Trump, but that isn’t typically the focus of a member of Congress’ job. One of the most important jobs an official can do is provide constituent services to those living in the district.

Nunes isn’t getting promising reviews on his Google Review and Yelp pages. On Google, Nunes’ Congressional office has nearly 3 stars, where on Yelp he has only 2 stars.

While his pages are stacked with people outside of his district complimenting and attacking him, Nunes does have a few reviews from his neck of the woods that aren’t promising.

Jane G. from Clovis, California called Nunes a “worthless representative.” In her 2019 Yelp review, she noted that Nunes “hasn’t held a public forum since 2010. Hasn’t passed one piece of legislation benefiting our area. 2020 he needs to go for good! PS the cow is cool.”.......................

With the Supreme Court Looming, Virginia Shores Up Abortion Rights

We really can not really on states rights in cases like abortion. Some states are good for women and families and others are rotten and take rights away. I fear what is going to happen in the SC.

With the Supreme Court Looming, Virginia Shores Up Abortion Rights

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear its first abortion case since the appointment of conservative justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, Virginia just took a preemptive step to protect the right to an abortion, no matter what happens in the courts.

Last year, Virginia elected its first state government controlled entirely by Democrats in more than two decades. The legislature has made good on Democrats’ campaign promises to push a popular progressive agenda by passing protections for LGBTQ residents, gun control, and now the Reproductive Health Protection Act, which removes onerous restrictions on abortion access.

“Virginians believe that they should have access to reproductive health care that is not full of restrictions,” says Charniele Herring, majority leader of the Virginia House of Delegates. “I think many Virginians—conservatives and progressives alike—do not like the idea of a politician entering the caregiver’s office to dictate what protocol should be used.”

OMG!! Epic Trump trolling by @VicenteFoxQue !! I love it so hard!!

Trump and Pompeo's Taliban 'peace deal' immediately hammered by conservative as a fraud

Trump and Pompeo’s Taliban ‘peace deal’ immediately hammered by conservative as a fraud

on February 29, 2020 By Tom Boggioni

In a column for the Washington Post, longtime conservative Max Boot claimed that the highly-touted peace deal Secretary of State Mike Pompeo signed early Saturday morning with Afghan officials is much less than what the White House is selling to the public.

Beginning by warning of the “treachery of labels,” Boot pointed out, “It has been heartening to see a steep reduction in violence over the past week — a U.S. precondition for signing the deal — but there is no agreement on a permanent cease-fire, much less a resolution of all the issues that divide the democratically elected Afghan government from the Taliban. What was signed on Saturday is an agreement to try to reach an agreement. To get even this far, the United States had to drop its long-standing demand for intra-Afghan negotiations to precede a U.S. troop drawdown.”

However, he points out, what may follow will likely not be what was promised.

“If I had to bet now, I would say that the ‘ugly’ scenario is the most likely and the ‘good’ scenario the least likely,” he elaborated. “The ‘bad’ scenario — with the Taliban dominating an ostensibly democratic government at gunpoint — is in the middle in terms of probability. How bad it would be depends on whether the Taliban would try to enforce their medieval mores on city dwellers, as they did in the 1990s, or whether, like Hezbollah, they would now tolerate different social systems in different parts of the country. The odds are they will be as brutal as ever — though they have promised to be more progressive in the future.”

According to the columnist, the real problem with the agreement as it now stands, is that it is designed more to please Donald Trump than it is to end the conflict...................

Kathleen Sebelius said Trump and Pence should NOT talk about the virus--Instead let the scientists

and the CDC do the talking. she was on msnbc after the trump presser.

Actually she said it twice. Said this would give people more confidence in hearing what is going on with the virus.

I couldn't agree more!!

PS--I have posted this elsewhere but worth an OP of its own.

Two women charged in attack of Spanish-speaking mother, daughter

EAST BOSTON, Mass. — Two women from Revere were charged in an unprovoked attack against a mother and daughter speaking Spanish in East Boston.

Jenny Leigh Ennamorati is charged with two counts of assault, two counts for serious crimes of violating constitutional rights with bodily injury and one charge of assault for using her foot to cause bodily harm.

Stephanie M. Armstrong is charged with two counts of assault and two counts for serious crimes of violating constitutional rights with bodily injury.

Both the victims and each witness claim Ennamorati and Armstrong began yelling at the mother and her daughter and then attacked them physically because they were speaking in Spanish. They all say the attack was unprovoked.

The alleged attack happened on Jan. 15 in the area of Maverick Square when Mrs. Vasquez, who declined to give her full name to protect her daughter, was walking home from the train station after leaving a birthday dinner with her daughter and a friend.

The group had been speaking in Spanish as they left the train station when they were approached by two women. Vasquez says they came charging at the group from across the street, yelling: “This is America, speak English. We don’t speak Spanish here.”.................................
