Colorado wildfires burn hundreds of homes, force evacuations

Source: AP

By PATTY NIEBERG 14 minutes ago

DENVER (AP) — An estimated 580 homes, a hotel and a shopping center have burned and tens of thousands of people were evacuated in wind-fueled wildfires outside Denver, officials said Thursday evening.

At least one first responder and six others were injured, though Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle acknowledged there could be more injuries and deaths could be possible due to the intensity of fires that quickly swept across the region as winds gusted up to 105 mph (169 kph).

The first fire erupted just before 10:30 a.m. and was “attacked pretty quickly and laid down later in the day and is currently being monitored” with no structures lost, Pelle said.

A second wildfire, reported just after 11 a.m., “ballooned and spread rapidly east,” Pelle said. The blaze spans 2.5 square miles (6.5 square kilometers) and has engulfed parts of the area in smoky, orangish skies and sent residents scrambling to get to safety.

The activity of the fires, which are burning unusually late into the winter season, will depend on how the winds behave overnight and could determine when crews are able to go in and begin assessing the damage and searching for any victims. ...............................................

'Where are you now?' Florida mayor asks DeSantis amid COVID surge

Source: www.local10news.com

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings says all Floridians should be outraged by the governor’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The head of one of Florida’s largest counties is calling out Gov. Ron DeSantis for his overall handling of the coronavirus pandemic as the omicron variant spreads across the state.

“He signed into law legislation that effectively prohibited local governments from being able to take charge and lead in our fight against COVID-19,” Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said earlier this week. “Our residents, Florida residents, should be outraged and ask, ‘Where are you now?’”

His comments come as Florida reported nearly 47,000 new cases to the CDC Wednesday -- a new single-day record of cases.

And, here at home, Miami-Dade announced they have officially hit a 25 percent positivity rate, meaning one in every four tests given in the last seven days has come back positive for COVID-19.

As part of efforts to shorten wait times for the crush of people trying to get tested, Miami-Dade has increased testing hours at Zoo Miami, the South Dade Government Center, Tropical Park and Aventura Mall.

Lawsuit Filed in Wisconsin by League of Women Voters To Challenge Purge of Voters

Lawsuit Filed in Wisconsin To Challenge Purge of Voters
https://www.democracydocket.com/alerts/lawsuit-filed-in-wisconsin-to-challenge-purge-of-voters/

December 27, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, Dec. 22, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) filed a federal lawsuit challenging the deactivation of over 31,000 Wisconsin voter registrations earlier this summer. The lawsuit alleges that 31,854 voter registrations were canceled without proper notice or an opportunity to respond in violation of the 14th Amendment’s due process clause. The LWVWI is asking for these voter registrations to be reactivated ahead of the 2022 election cycle.

This lawsuit stems from 2019 when the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) sent out a letter informing over 200,000 voters that their registrations were flagged because the WEC believed the voters had moved. However, the letter did not explicitly state that the voters’ registration would be deactivated if they did not confirm or deny they had moved or update their registration. The LWVWI filed a lawsuit challenging this, which was dismissed after parallel state court litigation was thrown out for lack of standing. In July 2021, however, the WEC purged the remaining 31,854 voters left on the list they compiled in 2019 for failure to reply to the letter or vote in the past two years — without providing another notice or opportunity to respond. Given that the 2019 letter was the only potential warning to voters about their registration status, the LWVWI asserts that “each of those voters’ registration records must be reactivated because they were not given notice of the consequence of failing to act in response to the 2019 … letter—deactivation—and the deadline for taking such action.”

Top Texas paper rakes AG Ken Paxton over the coals for acting as Trump's 'shameless toady'

Sky Palma and Raw Story

December 27, 2021

In an editorial in the Houston Chronicle published on Monday, the paper's Editorial Board accused Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton of being a "shameless toady of former President Donald Trump" who has done everything within his power to further conspiracy theories about mass voter fraud in the 2020 election.

In the editorial, the board cites the "absurd lawsuit" Paxton filed last December calling on the Supreme Court to invalidate election results in four key states. "Keep in mind that Paxton was acting in his role as our attorney general, even as he served as co-chair of Lawyers for Trump, a coalition of Republican attorneys created to bring legal challenges to aid the campaign," the Board writes.

According to the board, Paxton's "election integrity unit" spent $2.2 million of the state's money looking for non-existent election fraud.

"...the unit closed just three cases this year, down from 17 last year, and opened seven new ones. Paxton’s office discovered no evidence of voter fraud in 2020, beyond isolated and picayune incidents affecting a handful of votes," they write.

5 men accused of Plotting to kidnap Dem MI Gov. Gretchen Whitmer claim Entrapment!

Enough of this crap

These lawyers should be disciplined after the a judge throws out their stupid case IMHO

Men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan gov. have new creative defense
Defense attorneys claimed a plan to kidnap Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was actually initiated by the government.

In an effort to have their clients’ cases thrown out, defense attorneys for five men accused of plotting to kidnap Democratic Michigan Gov. !Whitmer are claiming the men were entrapped.

It’s the latest sign that conservative spin artists are desperate and eager to portray the movement’s increasingly violent acts as government conspiracies.
..............................

Attorneys for the five men said in a Saturday court filing that they were effectively coaxed into a plot. Their clients, they argued, had merely gone along with it out of “a sense of patriotism and right-doing.”

“Essentially, the evidence here demonstrates egregious overreaching by the government’s agents, and by the informants those agents handled,” defense attorneys wrote. “When the government was faced with evidence showing that the defendants had no interest in a kidnapping plot, it refused to accept failure and continued to push its plan.”

.............................
Prosecutors deny the men were entrapped. They said some were members of a militia group known as the Wolverine Watchmen, and the men prepared for the kidnapping by surveilling Whitmer’s home, as well as conducting field exercises for practice.

..........................

Just last week, Republican conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., claimed federal agents “encouraged people to go in” during the Jan. 6 attack. Defense attorneys for the men in Michigan are trying the same tactic and encouraging the conservative movement’s dangerous game plan: commit acts of political violence and deflect blame toward your adversaries with government conspiracy theories.

I guess Jim Cramer doesn’t know that stores have to take Christmas things off of shelves before they can put the Valentine’s Day things on the shelves. It’s not like they don’t do this every year. It’s because there are no other holidays between now & then to merchandise, Jim

Judge dismisses Ken Paxton's case accusing Medina County official of election fraud

Source: San Antonio Express

Updated: Dec. 28, 2021 6:54 p.m.

A judge has dismissed an election fraud case that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton brought earlier this year against a Medina County official.

Bandera County Judge Melvin “Rex” Emerson dismissed all charges on Dec. 21 against Tomas “Tommy” Ramirez, a justice of the peace in Medina County. Three days later, the State Commission on Judicial Conduct said Ramirez could return to his JP position. It had suspended him when he was indicted in February.

..................Paxton, who's been endorsed for re-election by former president Donald Trump despite facing felony charges, earlier this year accused Medina County Justice of the Peace Tomas “Tommy” Ramirez of running a vote-harvesting operation out of assisted living centers during the 2018 Republican primary.

Ramirez says the allegations led to threats and harassment against him, and he accused Paxton of pushing for an indictment just to get headlines and rile up his base, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

On Tuesday, a judge dismissed all charges against Ramirez.

“This case was politically motivated and was totally unjustified,” Ramirez said. “My family and I have received anonymous hate mail and ugly social media attacks. My law office was vandalized and I was even asked by the State Bar of Texas if I wanted to voluntarily surrender my law license.”..............................
