Democrats mull hardball tactics to leapfrog parliamentarian on immigration

Source: the hill

Lujan and Menendez issued a statement with Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) — backed by Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the No. 1 and No. 2 Senate Democrats, respectively — were they vowed to "pursue every means to achieve a path to citizenship in the Build Back Better Act."

Asked if Democrats would try to formally vote to overrule MacDonough or place someone in the chair who would ignore her guidance, which is frequently spoken by her to the senator presiding over the Senate, Durbin leaned in, saying that the statement "speaks for itself."

And a leadership aide stressed that Democrats were serious about looking at "any means necessary" when asked if Schumer would support overruling the parliamentarian or disregarding her advice.

Democrats' latest immigration proposal — which would have granted temporary immigration parole without a path to citizenship to about 6.5 million people — is the latest victim of MacDonough's guidance. Democrats previously pitched her on two plans that would have provided citizenship to up to 8 million immigrants, but she rejected both.

Democrats also stripped a plan to provide a $15 per hour minimum wage out of a coronavirus relief bill rather than confront her guidance that it didn't comply with the strict budget rules that govern what can be in the bill because Democrats are using reconciliation to bypass the 60-vote legislative filibuster.

But her latest immigration ruling has sparked fierce pushback from Senate Democrats, adding new momentum to trying to challenge her guidance on the floor or set it aside altogether. .............................

U.S. records most hurricane-force wind reports in single day

Source: axios

Updated 2 hours ago

A massive, multi-hazard storm unprecedented for mid-December in the Plains and Upper Midwest affected nearly 100 million people from New Mexico to Wisconsin on Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Why it matters: The latest storm is yet another demonstration that the dial on the extreme weather meter has gone all the way to 11 during 2021. Many of the events this year, including this one, bear the hallmarks of climate change.

By the numbers...

1st: Where Wednesday ranks in history for the number of hurricane wind gust reports (75 mph or greater) from severe thunderstorms in a single day in the Lower 48 states since such data began in 2004.

72°F: Temperature reached in Boscobel, Wisconsin, breaking the state's December high-temperature record by 2°F.
.............................
~660 miles: Distance the severe thunderstorms traveled.
.......................
18: Number of states where record highs were recorded.

As was the case with the deadly tornado outbreak last weekend, the record heat and high humidity, flowing north from an unusually warm Gulf of Mexico, helped fuel the severe storms.
1st: Wednesday's rank in the number of tornado warnings ever issued in South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota during the month of December, according to NOAA tornado researcher Harold Brooks. .....................................

FESTIVAL HALL, RACINE
COVID-19 testing to continue into 2022 at Festival Hall amid surging cases

Diana Panuncial 2 hrs ago

RACINE — Wisconsin has had nearly 1 million cases of COVID-19 and most of Racine County is still in the category of a "high risk" transmission, according to the most recent data.

The most recent number of cumulative cases (recorded on Monday) in the state according to the Wisconsin Department Health Services is about 923,900. The jurisdiction of Central Racine County Health Department, which includes most of the county outside the City of Racine, is still in the "high risk" of transmission category.

As a result, the National Guard's COVID-19 testing at Festival Hall will continue through at least Jan. 6, according to the City of Racine.

"As we head into the holiday, similar to last year, we are already seeing a surge in cases of COVID-19. It is critically important that before people gather with friends and family this holiday season that they both get vaccinated and get tested," stated Dottie-Kay Bowersox, public health administrator for the city.
