Invoking Uvalde, Trudeau out to freeze handgun sales

Source: politico

“We need only look south of the border to know that if we do not take action, firmly and rapidly, it gets worse,” the prime minister said as he introduced new measures.

OTTAWA, Ont. — The Canadian government is hoping for speedy passage of new firearm-control measures meant to fight rising gun violence in Canada, in the wake of last week’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced a national freeze on handgun sales.

“It will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” Trudeau said during a late afternoon press conference, surrounded by Cabinet ministers, Liberal MPs and gun control advocates.

“In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns.”..................................................

Canada’s Trudeau proposes handgun freeze in new gun control package

https://thehill.com/policy/international/3506290-canadas-trudeau-announces-handgun-freeze-in-new-gun-control-proposal/

by Zach Schonfeld - 05/30/22 8:49 PM ET

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a move to freeze the sale and transfer of handguns in the country as part of a strict gun control proposal introduced by his government on Monday.

The proposal would also create a new red flag law, which would allow a court to prohibit people deemed a threat from owning firearms, and allow the government to take away firearms licenses for individuals who commit domestic violence or criminal harassment.

“One Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many,” Trudeau said in a statement.

“I’ve seen all too well the tragic cost that gun violence has in our communities across the country,” he said. “Today, we’re proposing some of the strongest measures in Canadian history to keep guns out of our communities and build a safer future for everyone.”

Trudeau’s office said the handgun freeze will prevent individuals from bringing newly acquired handguns into the country or from buying, selling or transferring the firearms. Canada reported 1.1 million registered handguns in 2020, an increase of 71 percent from ten years earlier.

Unlike the United States, there is no constitutional protection to own firearms in Canada........................................................................................................................................................................................

A US Navy veteran was filmed personally accusing Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene of disparaging the military and other groups, calling the Republican congresswoman a “shame.”

The confrontation was caught on camera by WTVC at a campaign event on Monday in Trion, Georgia. The veteran, Alex Boyle, was incensed over some of Ms Greene’s past comments, and directly challenged her on them.

“You are disrespecting the United States Congress and you’re a shame,” Mr Boyle told the congresswoman...............................................

On Friday, thousands of gun owners gathered to defend and celebrate the types of laws that made it possible for a teenager to purchase a pair of AR-15-style semiautomatic rifles days after his 18th birthday.

I DO NOT BELIEVE THERE IS ANY SAVING THESE #MAGA GUN LOVERS!!

Emotions are supercharged in Houston.

Protestor shouting “Murder” in Spanish nonstop through a bullhorn as NRA members filter in. Across the street, convention goers can't figure out what it means.

“It's Spanish. Maybe it has something to do with Beto?”

“That fucking idiot?”

The U.S. Has Seen At Least 11 Mass Shootings This Memorial Day Weekend

Source: daily beast

WHEN WILL IT END?

Updated May. 30, 2022 12:05PM ET /

Mass shootings might often prompt cries of “never again,” but unfortunately that ship has already sailed. The Washington Post reports that this Memorial Day weekend alone has seen at least 11 mass shootings, defined by the Gun Violence Archive as incidents in which four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter. At least seven people were killed and 49 injured this weekend. In one incident, a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old woman were killed at a Philadelphia party. Guns are now the leading cause of death among young people in the U.S., and the number continues to steadily climb, NPR reports. Since the massacre at Uvalde, Texas’ Robb Elementary School that killed 19 children and two teachers last Tuesday, the U.S. has seen at least 14 mass shootings, which have killed at least 10 people and wounded 61 others, the Post reports.

AUSTIN, Texas – When Salvador Ramos, 18, barged into a classroom at Robb Elementary on Tuesday and opened fire, he accelerated an already horrifying trend: Children have become more than twice as likely to die from gun violence as they were before Gov. Greg Abbott (R) took office seven years ago.

The annual number of gun deaths for children 17 and under jumped from 54 in 2015, Abbott’s first year as governor, to 146 in 2020 — the latest year available from the Centers for Disease Control. Youth gun deaths rose every year over that period, except one. Texas has the distinction of having more children die by gunshot than any other state.

Those figures, highlighted in an interview with Ari Freilich of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, threaten to get worse this year, with 19 children dying in a single day at Ramos’ hands.

“Texas has suffered more of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings than any other state,” Freilich said. “They’ve repeatedly done nothing.” ..................................................

“We’re proud of our students for taking a stand," said Scott Parr, principal at Steele Canyon High.

Students at Canyon Crest Academy marched down the streets of their community.

“We were all saddened, angered, very emotional over the events in Texas," said Keala Minna-Choe, 10th grader at Canyon Crest.

“We also felt powerless,” said 11th grader Sarah Strasberg. “We felt that we couldn't do anything about this and we felt afraid to come to school because of all the stuff that has been happening, and we just wanted to show that we do have a voice and we hope legislators will listen.”

The walkouts are part of a nationwide protest against gun violence, led by the youth activist group Students Demand Action.

“I hope that a new law or just something comes out of this because a lot of the time it can get forgotten about or just nothing happens,” said Daniela De El Cortez, 10th grader at Canyon Crest.................................

Reports state that police took up to an hour to stop the alleged shooter, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, by which time 19 children and two teachers were already killed.

This was after a 911 call had been made by Ramos' grandmother after she was allegedly shot by Ramos at home, before he left for the school.

Shortly after that, another call was later made by someone who saw a crashed vehicle near the school and a person with a rifle going into the school.

While the police went to the scene soon after, it took them a while to go into the school. It was later revealed that some police officers went into the school to save their children first.

This is insane. Simply insane.

Stephen Colbert says during last two years, 573 new billionaires were created. - including 40 new pharmaceutical billionaires and 62 new food billionaires.
So would someone in GOP explain to me why Medicare can't negotiate drug prices & we can't try to regulate food monopolies?
