Biden: Trump 'assigns moral equivalence' to 'dark forces' of hate

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Monday condemned President Trump's rhetoric while campaigning for Democrats in Ohio, arguing that the president "assigns moral equivalence" to "dark forces" of hatred.

“When hatred is given a space to fester it encourages the seedier side of society to come out ... and the president of the United States assigns moral equivalence to these dark forces," Biden said during a rally at Youngstown State University in support of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray and other candidates, Toledo Blade reported.

“The forces of hate and terror have worked on the psyche of our fellow Americans, and targets have been people with different political beliefs or different colors of their skin or different religions,” he added.

Biden during his remarks condemned Saturday's attack at a synagogue in Pittsburgh that left 11 people dead, as well as a series of bombs sent last week to Democrats and other former government officials including himself who have exchanged criticism with Trump.

Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle release new ad blasting 'mainstream media and liberal mob'

Donald Trump Jr. and Kimberly Guilfoyle on Tuesday released an advertisement urging Republicans to stand up to the mainstream media and a "liberal mob" ahead of next week's midterm elections.

In the short video spot released by America First Policies, which Guilfoyle joined after leaving Fox News earlier this year, the two urge "every patriot" in the country to vote Republican in their state and local elections in order to protect President Trump's agenda.

"The mainstream media and the liberal mob are working hard to stop President Trump," Guilfoyle says in the video over images of MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and images of various protesters.

"This Nov. 6, we need every patriot to get to the polls," Guilfoyle adds. "Vote Republican."

Vice President Mike Pence doubled down on President Trump’s claims that a caravan of Honduran immigrants headed to the U.S.-Mexico border is funded by left-leaning Latin American groups and contains “criminals” and people of Middle Eastern descent, despite Trump’s admission that he had “no proof” to support his claims.


“The caravan that’s making its way north was organized in Honduras, according to what the President of Honduras told me, was organized by left-wing groups, political organizations within Honduras. It was likely financed in part by Venezuela,” he told Politico Playbook Tuesday.

“Whatever the motivation of people in the caravan, we happen to know there are people with serious criminal histories in the caravan, we’ve been told by law enforcement in the region that there are individuals from the Middle East in the caravan,” he added. “The simple fact is that human traffickers and politico leftist organizations in Central America are driving this forward.”

Tester Ad Features Missing Fingers, Shows How Red-State Dems Still In The Fight

Sen. Jon Tester’s (D-MT) closing campaign spot perfectly encapsulates the two main reasons most red-state Senate Democrats still have a chance at victory next week.

The spot highlights Tester’s local authenticity in a way only he can — by discussing how he lost fingers in a meat grinder accident as a kid — before flaying his GOP opponent for supporting “junk insurance” plans.

“I was nine years old when I lost my fingers in this meat grinder,” Tester says as he leans on the machine’s edge. “My parents paid for the hospital because our healthcare didn’t cover anything. It was junk insurance. Thank god Montana got rid of junk healthcare plans a long time ago — until our insurance commissioner, Matt Rosendale, let them back in. My opponent is also pushing to allow insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions.”



This is the latest red-state Democratic spot that has hit hard on the GOP push to weaken protections for pre-existing conditions. The message that’s been used heavily across the map as Democrats have gone hard on offense on Obamacare — even in the reddest states in the country.

The homophobic Masterpiece Cakeshop baker did an ad opposing a gay candidate

Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop doesn’t believe gay people should be allowed to marry, and now he’s trying to keep a gay man out of the governor’s office.

For years, Phillips has been fighting for a religious exemption to Colorado’s anti-discrimination law. He refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple – claiming that he has no problem with LGBTQ people, he is just religiously opposed to marriage equality – and took his case all the way to the Supreme Court earlier this year. But he recently appeared in an ad opposing gay Democrat Jared Polis’s campaign for governor of Colorado, produced by the Family Policy Alliance.

While the ad doesn’t reference the fact that Polis is gay, it links Polis to Phillips’s story, saying that he would appoint “even more radical members” to the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and that he supports “hostility toward Jack’s faith.”

The ad appears to have been removed from YouTube, and pages about the ad on the Family Policy Alliance’s website that are still linked on Google have been removed as well. Only a press release about the ad remains on their site, and the link to the ad in that release goes to a donation page.

Phillips’s case partly depends on proving that he was not motivated by bias against gay people. Appearing in ads to keep a gay man out of office isn’t helping.

Nope. The President Can't End Birthright Citizenship

A simple point as we start the morning. The President can’t end birthright citizenship by executive order. This is a completely ridiculous idea, a sort of clown-show trial-run at rule by decree. No one with any credibility, let alone legal experts think an executive order can end birthright citizenship. There has been a push on the right to change this practice by passing a law through Congress, specifically revising Immigration and Nationality Act. This too is dubious at best, though it has been proposed and with a sufficiently partisan Supreme Court anything can be done. The change to legislate a change is best scene as a stunt not real lawmaking.

Birthright citizenship is based on the clear wording of the 14th Amendment. It’s literally the first clause: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

As this historian explains in this thread, birthright citizenship was the default assumption in American law before the 14th amendment. (I strongly recommend reading that thread.) The only question was whether or not this framework was limited to white people. The debates surrounding the language makes clear that birthright citizenship specifically was what the amendment’s authors had in mind and that the need for the language was to apply it to people regardless of race. As a matter of policy you can make any arguments you want. As a matter of what the authors intended (i.e., an originalist argument) it’s really open and shut.

It’s clear that this is yet another shiny object President Trump is throwing up to grab hold of the news cycle in the final days before the midterm election. But the constitutional principle is important enough that a sturdy defense is still necessary.

At least three Republican lawmakers are already pushing back on President Donald Trump’s dubious claim that he can roll back birthright citizenship, a right currently enshrined in the 14th Amendment, by executive order.

A president cannot amend Constitution or laws via executive order. Concept of natural-born citizen in #14thAmendment derives from natural-born subject in Britain. Phrase “and subject to the jurisdiction thereof” excludes mainly foreign diplomats, who are not subject to U.S. laws.

The Associated Press deleted a tweet Tuesday that quoted a false claim President Donald Trump made directly and without any context, after getting pushback from some political observers.

We have deleted a tweet about President Trump’s claim that the U.S. is the only country that grants birthright citizenship because it failed to note that his statement was incorrect.

PITTSBURGH — A mourning family doesn’t want to meet him. Top members of his own party refuse to join him. The mayor has explicitly asked him not to come. And yet President Trump plans to visit this grief-stricken city Tuesday, amid accusations that he and his administration continue to fuel the anti-Semitism that inspired Saturday’s massacre inside a synagogue.

The president and first lady Melania Trump are scheduled to arrive in the late afternoon, several hours after the first funerals are held for the 11 victims of the mass shooting at Tree of Life synagogue. More than 1,000 people have so far signed up for a demonstration at the same time — declaring Trump “unwelcome in our city and in our country.”

Congressional leaders from both parties — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) — have all declined invitations to join Trump on his visit, according to three officials familiar with matter. So has at least one of the victims' families.

Trump offered to visit with the family of Daniel Stein, a 71-year-old who had just become a grandfather when he was gunned down at Tree of Life. Stein’s nephew, Stephen Halle, said the family declined. It was in part because of the comments Trump made in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, when he suggested the synagogue should have had an armed guard.

Longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone bragged about Wikileaks’ plans to release stolen emails from Democratic Party officials on conference calls during the run-up to the 2016 election, the Wall Street Journal reports.

At least twice during August 2016, the Trump adviser had conference calls where he told callers about WikiLeaks’ plans to release information that he said would affect the 2016 presidential campaign before the election, the paper reports.

The report is sourced to “people who listened to the sessions and recordings of one of the calls published online and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.” It’s a matter that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators are looking into, “according to a witness in the probe and another person familiar with the matter.”

“In the background of this entire race going forward is the fact that Julian Assange…is going to continue to drop information on the American voters that is going to roil this race,” Mr. Stone said on Aug. 4, 2016. “He has made that very clear.”
