White House Cancels Trump Photo Op After Flynn News

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published DECEMBER 1, 2017 12:40 PM

President Donald Trump had been scheduled invite reporters into the Oval Office on Friday for a photo-op with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj.

That changed after news broke that Michael Flynn had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and agreed to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. According to the Guardian’s Ben Jacobs, reporting as part of the White House press pool:

The pool gathered and walked on to the colonnade at 12:01 for the scheduled pool spray with the Libyan prime minister where we held, waiting to be let into the Oval Office.

At 12:04, we were taken back to the briefing room.

At 12:08, WH spokesperson Lindsey Walters said “There is no pool spray.”

America Is Trapped in Trump's Delusional World

December 1, 2017 at 11:14 am ESTBy Taegan Goddard

Andrew Sullivan: “This past week was, in some ways, the most potent distillation of the Trump era we have yet encountered. This is not because any single incident is worse than any previous one over the past year. It’s because the last few days have brought all of them together in a new, concentrated way — a super-storm, as it were, of liberal democratic destruction.”

“We have deranged tweeting; truly surreal lies; mindless GOP tribalism; evangelicals making excuses for the molestation of minors; further assaults on the free press; an unprecedented attack on the most reliable Atlantic ally; the demonization of personal enemies; stupendous tribal hypocrisy with respect to sexual abuse; the White House’s endorsement of a foreign neo-fascist hate group; the vengeful hanging out to dry of a Cabinet member; and the attempt to pass a catastrophic omnibus piece of legislation in one mad, blind rush in order to get a ‘win.’ And all in a few days!”

“Give such a man the power and trappings of the most powerful office on earth, give him a few months, and such delusions will get worse. Sane men and women are corrupted by the wielding of power; a psychologically disturbed figure from the get-go will degenerate into deeper and deeper forms of madness.”

Flynn prepared to testify Trump directed him to contact Russians: ABC

By Sarah N. Lynch, Reuters•December 1, 2017

By Sarah N. Lynch

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - ABC News reported on Friday that former U.S. national security adviser Michael Flynn is prepared to testify that President Donald Trump directed him to make contact with Russians when he was a presidential candidate.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report, which cited a Flynn confidant. The news sent U.S. stocks sharply lower. [nL3N1O14E8]

Flynn, a former top Trump campaign aide and a central figure in a federal investigation into Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, pleaded guilty on Friday to lying to the FBI.

His plea agreement, and his decision to cooperate with the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, marked a major escalation in a probe that has dogged Trump's administration since the Republican president took office in January.

Lawmaker behind secret $84K sexual harassment settlement unmasked

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) used taxpayer funds to end a dispute with his communications director in 2014.

By RACHAEL BADE 12/01/2017 12:24 PM EST

Rep. Blake Farenthold used taxpayer money to settle a sexual harassment claim brought by his former spokesman — the only known sitting member of Congress to have used a little-known congressional account to pay an accuser, sources told POLITICO.

Lauren Greene, the Texas Republican’s former communications director, sued her boss in December 2014 over allegations of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.

Greene claimed in the lawsuit that another Farenthold aide told her the lawmaker had “sexual fantasies” and “wet dreams” about Greene. She also claimed that Farenthold “regularly drank to excess” and told her in February 2014 that he was “estranged from his wife and had not had sex with her in years.”

When she complained about comments Farenthold and a male staffer made to her, Greene said the congressman improperly fired her. She filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia, but the case was later dropped after both parties reached a private settlement.

Mueller: Trump Team Meddling In Obama Diplomacy Extended Beyond Flynn

Source: Talking Points Memo

By TIERNEY SNEED and Caitlin Macneal Published DECEMBER 1, 2017 12:11 PM

In court documents and at a hearing where former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn entered a guilty plea for lying to the FBI, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team said that other officials in President Trump’s transition team were aware of and even instructed Flynn’s backchannel communications with a Russian ambassador before Trump’s inauguration.

According to prosecutors, Flynn, in a voluntary Jan. 24 interview with FBI, made false statements about a push by the Trump transition team to persuade officials from a foreign government to delay or defeat a United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution to condemn Israeli settlements. Flynn also lied to FBI agents about a previously reported conversation he had with the ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, on Dec. 29 about sanctions the Obama administration was imposing on Russia at the time.

In both instances, Mueller said that at least another member of the Trump transition team was involved in Flynn’s plans to talk to Kislyak about the UN vote and the sanctions. The allegations undermine the response offered by White House attorney Ty Cobb to news of Flynn’s guilty plea that, “Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn.”

Comey taunts Trump on Twitter with righteous Bible verse about 'justice'

01 DEC 2017 AT 12:12 ET

Former FBI Director James Comey taunted President Donald Trump on Friday by quoting a Bible verse about the virtues of justice.

Shortly after former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI on Friday, Comey posted a tweet that quoted Amos 5:24, which reads, “Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”

Comey, who was fired by Trump as FBI director this past May, subsequently testified in front of Congress that President Trump had asked him to “let go” over the agency’s investigation into Flynn. Comey also said that Trump had demanded an oath of loyalty to him.

By the time Trump asked Comey to drop its investigation into Flynn this past February, the FBI had already discovered that Flynn had lied to its agents about a conversation he had with former Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Statement from President's Lawyer

By JOSH MARSHALL Published DECEMBER 1, 2017 11:50 AM

Statement from Trump lawyer Ty Cobb …

“Today, Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor at the White House for 25 days during the Trump Administration, and a former Obama administration official, entered a guilty plea to a single count of making a false statement to the FBI.

“The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year. Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the Special Counsel’s work demonstrates again that the Special Counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion.”

Flynn pleads guilty, reaches deal on charge of lying to FBI

(emphasis added -- Don)

Good Morning America December 1, 2017

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, once a member of President Trump’s inner circle of advisers, has pleaded guilty in a deal with the Special Counsel investigating foreign meddling in the 2016 elections in which he admits to lying to the FBI about his back-channel conversations with the Russian ambassador.

Flynn’s plea signals the former top adviser to President Trump is now cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team. A brief statement released by Mueller’s team Friday morning does not say what information Flynn has provided the government as part of the deal, but people familiar with the agreement told ABC News Friday he has made a decision to assist investigators.

The general told confidants about his decision to plead guilty in the last 24 hours, according to people close to Flynn, who say the former adviser feels President Trump has abandoned him and has agreed to answer questions about the president or anyone else.

Flynn was charged with lying to the FBI about the nature of his conversations with then-Russian ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak during the presidential transition. Those conversations led Russian officials to temper their response to increased U.S. sanctions, according to the charging documents. The charge means Flynn could face up to 5 years in prison.

Flynn becomes the latest and most-senior Trump associate to face charges in Mueller's probe and is scheduled to appear in court at 10:30 a.m. He has already been processed at the FBI Washington Field Office, according to FBI officials, where he was fingerprinted and photographed.

Cornyn says Senate has the votes to pass GOP tax bill

Source: The Washington Post

By Damian Paletta and Erica Werner December 1 at 10:41 AM

A key Senate GOP leader said Friday that Republicans had secured enough votes to pass a massive tax package, expressing optimism after a night of high-stakes negotiations.

Coming out of a meeting of Senate leaders, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said, “We have at least 50, and we’re still working.”

The comments from Cornyn, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate, came just hours after Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said he planned to back the bill. He was one of the final holdouts, though the GOP needed a little more help to ensure they had the 50 votes they needed. Cornyn did not say who else had committed to support the package.

Johnson’s support followed a late night of negotiations, following a standoff on the Senate floor Thursday when Johnson and two other members aired concerns about the bill.
