Texas Dem: Trump's immigration order is possible grounds for impeachment

Democratic U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (TX) said that if Pres. Donald Trump tries to force government agencies to ignore a judge’s stay on his controversial — and chaotically implemented — immigration order from last week, then Congress must begin the process of impeachment.

BuzzFeed.com said Wednesday that Castro joined other Democrats like Sen. Dick Durban (D-IL) in calling for an investigation into whether Trump “intentionally exceeded his constitutional authority” with the order, which plunged the U.S. immigration system into chaos and drove protesters into the streets by the thousands.

Congress must take steps to censure Pres. Trump, Castro said, or begin impeachment lest the nation’s government devolve into a “military junta” with “no more checks and balances” on executive power.

If the White House has ordered Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officers to ignore the stay handed down by a federal judge last Sunday, Democrats say, then the administration has crossed a red line.

Pelosi Slams Trump's 'Hostile Appointment' To The Supreme Court

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published FEBRUARY 1, 2017, 10:53 AM EDT

In a town hall event on CNN Tuesday night, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) slammed President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court as “a very hostile appointment.”

Pelosi described federal appeals court Judge Neil Gorsuch as “hopefully [Trump’s] only appointment to the court,” and said that Gorsuch has “come down on the side of corporate America” on a number of important issues.

“Class action suits, on security fraud, he has come down against employees’ rights. Clean air, clean water, food safety, safety in medicine and the rest,” Pelosi said, referring to Gorsuch’s legal record. “If you care about that for your children, he is not your guy.”

Pelosi said that Gorsuch's hostility towards protecting those with disabilities with public education was especially troubling to her.

Trump's Supreme Court Pick Is Payoff to the Religious Right

Judge Neil Gorsuch is enthusiastically pro-life and conservative on all other issues near and dear to evangelicals who held their noses and who elected a morally flawed president.

Judge Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, is Trump’s payback to the Christian Right.

Gorsuch is the clearest social conservative of the SCOTUS finalists. He has written several books opposing euthanasia and assisted suicide, describing a sincere and consistent pro-life philosophy. (He later stated that those were his personal beliefs, separate from his role as a judge.) He wrote a concurrence in the Tenth Circuit Hobby Lobby case that was extremely favorable to the corporation. He has been likewise supportive other cases affirming wide-ranging religious exemptions to civil rights laws.

In short, Gorsuch is the dream candidate of the Christian Right—consider this love letter from the Christian Right group Alliance Defending Freedom—which, after all, is the constituency that put Trump over the top on November 8. Post-election analyses have focused on the “white working class,” but it’s evangelicals who held their noses, thought of the Supreme Court, and voted for Trump. Now they are being rewarded.

Democrats will undoubtedly oppose Gorsuch; in their view, he’s being nominated for a seat that was President Obama’s to choose and Judge Merrick Garland’s to fill. But their opposition will have to be principled, not personal. There is no question that he is qualified (Harvard, Oxford, PhD), a gifted writer, and a bit of a prodigy. Only 49 years old, he is the youngest Supreme Court nominee since Justice Thomas. And as Trump said while introducing him, Gorsuch was approved unanimously for his current position.

Exclusive: A third of Americans think Trump's travel ban will make them safer

Source: Reuters

By Chris Kahn | NEW YORK

Imposing a temporary travel ban on citizens from seven Muslim countries, President Donald Trump said the move would help protect the United States from terrorism. But less than one-third of Americans believe the move makes them "more safe," according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

The Jan. 30-31 poll found roughly one in two Americans backed the ban, which also suspends admission of all refugees for 120 days, although there were sharp divisions along party lines.

Trump has pushed back against critics who say the travel ban targets Muslims. He says the "extreme vetting" is necessary to protect the country and its borders. "This is not about religion," Trump said in a statement after announcing the travel ban on Friday. "This is about terror and keeping our country safe."

In the Reuters/Ipsos poll some 31 percent of people said the ban made them feel "more safe," while 26 percent said it made them feel "less safe." Another 33 percent said it would not make any difference and the rest said they don't know.
