Pence: 'I Hope' GOP Will Move Forward On Obamacare Repeal By End Of Year

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ESME CRIBB Published APRIL 30, 2017 1:41 PM

Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday said that he “hopes” Congress will have a health care bill on President Donald Trump’s desk by the end of the year, a far cry from Republicans’ original push to pass legislation within his now-elapsed first 100 days.

“We’re hopeful there’ll be action in the House of Representatives soon,” Pence said in an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” “I think health care reform, repealing and replacing Obamacare, is just around the corner.”

“How do you pass this thing?” Chuck Todd asked. “First, before I get to that, let’s begin with the fact that Obamacare has failed,” Pence deflected. “I mean, it literally is collapsing all across the country.”

“That is a very debatable point, Mr. Vice President,” Todd replied.

Donald Trump will be a two-term president unless the opposition can find a way to change America

Donald Trump will be a two-term president — unless the opposition can find a way to change America

Focusing on Trump's lies, or his personal flaws, won't get it done. We must change the American consciousness

OLUFEMI TAIWO

Ongoing opposition to Donald J. Trump’s presidency continues a trend that began during the election campaign: a singular focus on the man and his foibles, as if those who supported him did not get enough of the hashing and rehashing of those same weaknesses before Election Day. Many of us in the opposition are still acting surprised that he is such a consummate con artist, liar, bloviator, narcissist and so on, in office as he was on the campaign trail.

What were we supposed to expect? That Trump was only lying to get into office and would stop doing so out of respect for the majesty of the presidency? That his narcissism would be attenuated somehow by the demands of the office? That he would suddenly become a ratiocinative person just because he is now president? That his racism would evaporate because, somehow, the presidency is a cure for that disorder?

Trump’s triumph has little to do with the man himself, whatever his strengths and weaknesses or even the genius of his campaign strategies. It has more to do with where the nation is, where we its people or at least a salient segment of us are, and the state of our public life and discourse and the institutions that provide the vessels in which they unfold. Our vituperations against Trump will not deny him a second term if those fundamentals do not change significantly. Of course, if we are lucky, the man will self-destruct. Don’t count on it.

Ours is a degraded country epitomized in a degraded electorate, degraded media and degraded institutions — political, educational and bureaucratic.

Pelosi: Odds of Democrats retaking House 'better and better'

Source: Politico

By CONNOR O’BRIEN 04/30/17 10:57 AM EDT

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday the chances of Democrats taking back the majority in the House of Representatives in midterm elections is getting "better and better" during the Trump administration. "I've never in my years in politics seen so much enthusiasm," Pelosi told "ABC This Week."

"History is on our side," Pelosi said, noting changes in House majorities under former Presidents Bill Clinton (1994), George W. Bush (2006) and Barack Obama (2010).

Pushed on polling data that indicates voters view Democrats as more out of touch than President Donald Trump and Republicans, Pelosi responded that the party needs to better communicate its message.

"The Democratic Party is unified. I would say my only critique of the Democrats [is] we have walked the walk, but we haven't talked the talk," the California Democrat said. "All we do is fight for America's working families against special interests that Republicans represent, but that has not come across."

McCain on pre-emptive strike on North Korea: 'We have to consider that option'

Source: Politico

By CONNOR O’BRIEN 04/30/17 11:18 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain said Sunday the Trump administration should consider a pre-emptive strike against North Korea if the U.S. determines that country's regime can mount a nuclear weapon onto a ballistic missile, but cautioned military action should be last resort.

"I think that we have to consider that option as the very last option, and for a number of reasons," McCain said on CNN's "State of the Union." The Arizona Republican described ruling out possible military action as "foolish."

McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said one of the reasons for caution is the close proximity of the populous South Korean capital, Seoul, to North Korea. Should a shooting war break out, McCain said, "The carnage would be horrendous."

McCain told host Jake Tapper he didn't think Trump was considering a pre-emptive strike against the North Korean regime. McCain called on China to use its leverage over North Korea to "put the brakes on this."

Biden keeps 2020 options open

The former vice president and his staff have been planning a strategic timeline in the event he decides to run.

By EDWARD-ISAAC DOVERE 04/30/17 07:04 AM EDT

Joe Biden has been saying yes to nearly all the political invitations coming his way, with new ones arriving almost daily. Privately, the former vice president and his staff have started talking about how to begin planning a strategy with a roughly 18-month timeline so that if he decides on another presidential run, he’ll be best positioned to get it off the ground.

Biden will be 77 by the time of the next Iowa caucuses, but Biden 2020 just might happen.

He will be in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Sunday night for a speech at the state Democratic Party dinner. After that, he’ll appear at a fundraiser for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and deliver, by turns, a speech to the Florida Democratic Party, an address to investment leaders’ SALT Conference in Las Vegas in May, and commencement addresses at Harvard University, Colby College and Morgan State University. It’s the kind of schedule that would fit with a candidate in the early stages of a White House run, but adviser say that at this point his activities are guided only by keeping his commitment to staying involved and helping rebuild the Democratic Party.

While former President Barack Obama is holding back to avoid being drawn in directly with his successor, Biden will be stating a case, and making sure people hear him state it. The former vice president, according to people who’ve spoken with him, is eager to be much more political, though not directly anti-Trump.

“He doesn’t sit still well,” said a Biden adviser. “He wants to have a voice. The more stuff he does like this, the more people hear his voice.”

Trump: Election Hacking 'Could've Been China'

Trump: Election Hacking ‘Could’ve Been China’

President Donald Trump on Sunday suggested that China could have been behind the series of cyberattacks that plagued last year’s election. “If you don’t catch a hacker, okay, in the act, it’s very hard to say who did the hacking. With that being said, I’ll go along with Russia,” Trump said in an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation. “Could’ve been China, could’ve been a lot of different groups.” U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia was behind a massive influence campaign to help elect Trump and tear down Hillary Clinton. Trump said he is not “ambivalent” on the issue, but added that “we have to find out what happened.” He also declared that the hacking had “nothing to do with us.” The FBI is probing whether Trump officials colluded with Russians to tip the election in his favor.

Trump: New Health Care Bill To Guarantee Coverage For Pre-Existing Conditions

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ESME CRIBB Published APRIL 30, 2017 11:43 AM

President Donald Trump on Sunday made several pledges about the next iteration of the Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, which he said will guarantee health coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

The health care bill is going to help my supporters, Trump [link:http://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-interview-full-transcript-face-the-nation/said] on CBS Face the Nation. Otherwise, Im not going to sign it.

He said the bill will drive competition and set up a pool for the pre-existing conditions so that the premiums can be allowed to fall.

This bill is much different than it was a little while ago, okay? This bill has evolved, he said. And we didnt have a failure on the bill. You know, it was reported like a failure. Now, the one thing I wouldnt have done again is put a timeline.

Ann Coulter: 'Why Isn't it Hate Speech to Keep Telling Me How Hispanics Are Going to Vote?'

by Justin Baragona | 11:16 am, April 30th, 2017

Conservative provocateur Ann Coulter has been front and center in the news over the past couple of weeks due to a cancellation of a speech of hers at University of Calfornia – Berkeley for safety concerns. This led to a larger discussion of free speech, with a number of progressive leaders coming to Coulter’s defense and decrying the situation.

Coulter appeared this morning on ABC’s This Week to talk about the flap and the issue of free speech in general. At one point, she took a bit of issue with host Jonathan Karl’s position that Berkeley students’ reaction to her shouldn’t be surprising due to her past inflammatory comments, highlighting remarks she made about 9/11 widows and who should have the right to vote.

Coulter responded by bringing up how there is much political discussion about the “browning of America” and how certain demographics vote. However, when she talks about the white vote, there is an outcry.

“And that’s hate speech?” Coulter asked. “Why isn’t it hate speech to keep telling me how Hispanics are going to vote?”

South Korea says U.S. reaffirms it will pay THAAD costs; joint drills wrap up

Source: Reuters

Sun Apr 30, 2017 | 10:42am EDT

By Ju-min Park and James Pearson | SEOUL

South Korea said the United States had reaffirmed it would shoulder the cost of deploying the THAAD anti-missile system, days after President Donald Trump said Seoul should pay for the $1-billion battery designed to defend against North Korea.

In a telephone call on Sunday, Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, reassured his South Korean counterpart, Kim Kwan-jin, that the U.S. alliance with South Korea was its top priority in the Asia-Pacific region, the South's presidential office said.

The conversation followed another North Korean missile test-launch on Saturday which Washington and Seoul said was unsuccessful, but which drew widespread international condemnation.

Trump, asked about his message to North Korea after the latest missile test, told reporters: "You'll soon find out", but did not elaborate on what the U.S. response would be.
