SCOTUS Rejects Appeal Of Group With Secret Planned Parenthood Recordings

Source: Talking Points Memo/The AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is rejecting an appeal from an anti-abortion group that surreptitiously recorded Planned Parenthood employees.

The justices joined lower courts Monday in allowing Planned Parenthood’s racketeering and other claims against the Center for Medical Progress to proceed. Two members of the group also are facing criminal charges in California over the secret recordings.

The center says its videos show Planned Parenthood employees illegally selling parts of aborted fetuses.

Planned Parenthood says the center surreptitiously accessed its conferences to gain meetings with its staff and create deceptively edited and false videos that were posted online.

Planned Parenthood denied wrongdoing in connection with its fetal tissue practices.

After Years Of Blocking Obama's Nominees, McConnell Slams Dems' 'Historic Obstruction'

By Kate Riga
April 1, 2019 8:25 am

Sen. Majority Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wrote an op-ed in Politico Monday decrying Democrats’ “historic obstruction,” an accusation that won’t sit well with liberals still furious about McConnell’s refusal to allow a vote on former President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland.

“Since January 2017, for the first time in memory, a minority has exploited procedure to systematically obstruct a President from staffing up his administration,” McConnell wrote. “This new, across-the-board obstruction is unfair to the President and, more importantly, to the American people.”

He continued that he is introducing a proposal to make it easier for Republicans to get President Donald Trump’s nominees approved by circumventing Democratic opposition.

“Our proposal would only reduce the time a minority can keep delaying lower-tier nominations after a majority has invoked cloture,” he wrote. “This would keep the Senate floor moving, saving time that is currently tied up in inoffensive nominations that senators don’t even really debate. And, at last, it would let President Trump fill important vacancies at a more reasonable pace.”

White House whistleblower says 25 security clearance denials were reversed during Trump administration

By Rachael Bade April 1 at 10:00 AM

A White House whistleblower told lawmakers that more than two-dozen denials for security clearances have been overturned during the Trump administration, calling Congress her “last hope” for addressing what she considers improper conduct that has left the nation’s secrets exposed.

Tricia Newbold, a longtime White House security adviser, told the House Oversight and Reform Committee that she and her colleagues issued “dozens” of denials for security clearance applications that were later approved despite their concerns about blackmail, foreign influence, or other red flags, according to panel documents released Monday.

Newbold, an 18-year veteran of the security clearance process who has served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, said she warned her superiors that clearances “were not always adjudicated in the best interest of national security” — and was retaliated against for doing so.

“I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security,” Newbold told the committee, according to a panel document summarizing her allegations.

Intelligence Report Suggested Left-Wing Charlottesville Protesters Were 'Terrorists'

An intelligence report produced for law-enforcement agencies ahead of the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally suggested that left-wing demonstrators were “terrorists” and as responsible for street violence as white nationalists. According to The Guardian, the May 2017 report was produced by the Regional Organized Crime Information Center—one of six federally funded Regional Intelligence Sharing System (RISS) Centers in the U.S. The report frames political street violence in America as an equal battle between “an alliance between anarchists and communists to confront and defeat fascists and white supremacists by whatever means necessary” and “anti-antifa, a loose collection of white supremacists, neo-Nazis, white nationalists, Ku Klux Klanners, white identity groups, and a group called the alt-right.” The report reproduces a description by Republican National Committee member Shawn Steel claiming the anti-fascists are “terrorists.” Michael German, a former FBI agent and far-right specialist, said: “What it seems to do is completely whitewash the history of white-supremacist violence in this country.”

Trump ‘Very Bitter and Sensitive’ About Puerto Rico, and Dems Say His Team Is Stonewalling Their Investigation

As the island faces a new round of crises, the president has tripled down on blaming others—and Democratic lawmakers investigating the hurricane response say they’re being blocked.

It was arguably the biggest scandal and outrage of Donald Trump’s young, already scandal-ridden presidency.

There was a large American body count piling up, along with mounting reports and questions about the administration’s mismanagement of the relief efforts, with few answers forthcoming. With the bodies barely cold, the president instead launched sustained, petty public-relations warfare against politicians who he felt had crossed him and, at times, appeared to go to war with the victims of the storms.

It was “Trump’s Katrina,” and then some.

Now, a year and a half after hurricanes Irma and María ravaged Puerto Rico, the island is grappling with a whole new round of crises, Trump has been telling his GOP allies that Puerto Rico is receiving too much assistance from the federal government, and lawmakers leading an investigation into what happened after the storms are being stalled.

Some Democratic lawmakers are all but accusing the Trump administration of stonewalling them in their inquiries.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), who chairs the House Oversight Committee’s subcommittee on government operations, told The Daily Beast he still hasn’t seen key documents from the administration detailing its response to the hurricanes. He said the committee should be prepared to use its subpoena power to obtain those documents—and, if necessary, to hold officials in contempt of Congress if they don’t comply.

“This is not an academic exercise,” said Connolly. “People lost their lives.”

Mika Brzezinski Defends Joe Biden: ‘Extremely Affectionate, Extremely Flirtatious in a Completely Safe Way’

by Colby Hall | Apr 1st, 2019, 6:56 am

Mika Brzezinski defended Joe Biden in light of recent reports of alleged inappropriate and unwanted affection shown by the former Vice President, who many believe to be a front-runner for the 2020 race for Democratic nominee.

Biden is under media scrutiny after former Nevada State Assemblywoman Lucy Flores detailed, in a piece for The Cut, a very awkward and uncomfortable encounter she experienced in 2014. Numerous videos of a touchy-feely Biden showing affection towards women and girls have been used to show how he may cross lines have been shared, though one such recipient, Stephanie Carter, has since pushed back and claimed that it was “not a #MeToo moment.”

Brzezinski, a consistent advocate of women’s rights, opened her defense of Biden cautiously, describing this as a “very extensive and careful conversation that we need to have.”

She then defended Biden who she described as a friend “There’s a lot of things I know about Joe Biden– I’ve known him for a long time — he is extremely affectionate extremely flirtatious in a completely safe way,” adding “I am sure that somebody can misconstrue something he’s done. But as much as I can know what’s in anyone’s heart, I don’t think there is bad intent on his part at all.”
