Bernie Sanders: I Continue to Oppose the Patriot Act!
Take Action - Sunset the Patriot Act
Here's an easy way to let your Senators and Representatives know that you want the Patriot Act to sunset
As of June 1, 2015 Section 215 of the Patriot Act expires. We have another chance to get rid of this horrible piece of legislation that has taken away our liberties. This is a piece of legislation that helped this site grow. Democrats and even some, at that time, Republicans, came together against this Act. An Act we knew was anything but patriotic. That was nothing more than a piece of terror to put upon the American public and would be used in ways that hurt us. Together, we formed a bond on DU.
No matter what you think of Edward Snowden, he has opened the eyes of many and showed the world that our government is in everything we do. The egregious acts against the people of the United States, and the world, that our government justifies with the Patriot Act must end.
We don't kid ourselves by thinking what the NSA collects information on us for anything more than corporate profit. Just ask Jeremy Hammond, Barrett Brown and so many others.
As of Saturday, the Act has not been renewed. But it will be taken up in the Senate again on Tuesday.
This wonderful site, created by the same great bunch of people that spearheaded the fight for net neutrality, has made it as simple as possible to contact your congressmen and congresswomen.
You can sign a letter that is sent directly to your representatives and senators. You can then click one button and the site calls each of them for you. It even gives you a script if you are not comfortable with your own words. It calls the next person as soon as you are done speaking to the first.
Please note the organizations that support this site and movement. Great places I am sure we all visit from time to time, like Daily Kos, Left Action, democrats.com, etc. Not sure why we're not there.

adding alert to hosts for replies
Is there any way to add the alert to hosts for the replies? As it stands, you either have to have a reply go to a jury or email a host. Sometimes it's just a group thing that shouldn't be a jury decision, but a host decision
Or, in lieu of adding the ability to just alert hosts on a reply, could the alert that goes to a jury, or the decision, be sent to hosts as well as the alerter and the jurors?
Thank you for your consideration

We have weekly media targets, avatars and logos, state voting regulations, Bernie videos and, of course, the SoP.
If you have a suggestion that doesn't fit in those categories, just go ahead and post it. Like Reddit. Seems they're doing great things over there. I don't know reddit but I think I will try learning
Thank you, all you Bernie group members, for keeping this group going and growing.

Here Are 13 Killings by Police Captured on Video in the Past Year (mother Jones title)
It is a never ending list of murder by police. In most cases, murder for nothing less than being black in America. While there is a great deal of talk, committees, lawsuits, nothing changes.
It is a great first step that President Obama has limited what equipment can be sold to, given to, or used by, local police departments. However, it is a small step with many caveats that allow for their use. A step nonetheless
Time and time again, the DoJ investigates, finds blatant racism in practice, unwritten policy and contact between the cops and/or officials linked to the police departments. Yet nothing is done. Nothing more than a cop or two losing their job.
It's been over six months since the child, Tamir Rice, was murdered by the Cleveland Police Department. A department that was found by the DoJ to have violated the rights of minorities. This finding was prior to the Cleveland cop gunning down the 12 year old, just playing in the park, in cold blood. Prior to the Cleveland cops watching Tamir die, giving no aid as they tackled his 14 year old sister when she ran to her dying little brother. And still, nothing has been done. The two cops not even questioned, while they take over a half of a year paid vacation.
Screenshot from police video of the shooting of Jason Harrison in Dallas on June 14, 2014. Harrison's family obtained the footage in a civil rights lawsuit and chose to publicize it.
FROM FERGUSON LAST summer to Baltimore this spring, police killings of unarmed black men under questionable circumstances have sparked outrage, civil unrest, and a heated national debate about policing in the United States. As Mother Jones and others have reported, there isn't sufficient data available for determining how many people are shot to death or otherwise killed by police each year, or how the issue might be trending. But more such incidents appear to be getting captured on video than ever before, due in part to the ubiquity of cellphone cameras. The footagenot only from cellphones, but also surveillance cameras, dashboard cameras in police cars, and police-worn body camerashas caused a tectonic shift in public awareness.
Mother Jones has contacted law enforcement officials about the status of these 13 cases: Investigations are ongoing in eight of them. In one case, now six months old, the two officers involved still haven't been questioned by investigators. Officers in the five other cases have been absolved of wrongdoing via local or state proceedings. (One of those five cases is currently under review by the US Department of Justice.) Three of the 24 officers total who were involved in the 13 cases are currently facing criminal charges.
Mother Jones
Videos at link capture the murders of; James Boyd, Richard Ramirez, Jason Harrison, Eric Garner, John Crawford III, Dillon Taylor, Kajieme Powell, Tamir Rice, Jerame Reid, Antonio Zambrano-Montes, Charly Keunang, Phillip White and Walter Scott.
We know there are more caught on video. Some because a bystander risked their freedom, or even lives, and some caught on surveillance video. But even with the videos, most of the cops have gotten away with murder. And this is just the murders. Countless videos of beatings and other forms of police brutality are out there. We know very well that the fact these are caught on video means the number of incidents is astronomical.
The most recent I have seen is the murder of Sgt. James Brown. An Army Veteran who was to spend the weekend in jail for a DUI. A brave, strong, beautiful young husband and father. Another young, black man begging for air. Another victim repeatedly stating, "I can't breathe" while being ignored by the murderous cops.
KFOX-TV
The videos are difficult to watch. I can't watch them again. And while I hope that these murderers are continued to be caught on video, I just want it to stop.
We need to support the police officers who would come forward. These brave men and women often lose their jobs and are subjected to horrors themselves, including being put in mental health facilities.
Maybe there is something we can do to encourage those that might come forward. Something that will allow them to take that step.
Edited to add:
If anyone has any ideas about how we can encourage cops to come forward, please, put it in a reply. I truly don't know what can be done in this area.
Lawrence O'Donnell ignored Bernie's candidacy - Bernie Group
Last night on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell, Mr. O'Donnell did a great story on Elizabeth Warren. The huge problem with the story is he completely ignored Bernie's declared candidacy.
He stated, when talking about Warren's speech yesterday in California, that she didn't mention, "the only declared candidate in the Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton."
It's bad enough that MSNBC is not giving anywhere near the same coverage to Senator Sanders as they do to Clinton, but to completely ignore that he is a declared candidate is too much.
I have been tweeting and writing Chris Hayes, asking why he hasn't done a "Sanders for millennials" like he did for Clinton. Now I will be contacting Lawrence O'Donnell asking that he correct this glaring mistake.
I am really disappointed. I have much respect for Lawrence O'Donnell and am shocked by this. Absolutely no way he doesn't know Senator Sanders is running as a Democrat in the primary

Transgender Woman Stabbed To Death In Philadelphia
Source: Buzz Feed
London Chanel, a 21-year-old transgender woman, was stabbed to death in North Philadelphia early Monday, a city official told BuzzFeed News.
Chanel is the eighth transgender woman of color killed in the United States this year a trend that anti-violence advocates have called an epidemic. And as in many of the cases, Chanel was misgendered in early reports.
There has been an immediate outcry from the community who knew her, said Nellie Fitzpatrick, director of the Mayor's Office of LGBT Affairs for the City of Philadelphia. I was receiving reports from the community that the deceased was transgender and needed to be referred to appropriately as a woman with female pronouns.
NBC10 initially reported, based on interviews with Philadelphia police, that the victim was a "man" stabbed inside a vacant North Philadelphia home. Her name was London Chanel," one of the commenters on the article said. "Please correct the terrible reporting in this article immediately. Black trans women are already at extreme risk of violence, it doesn't help to hide their murders by using the wrong names and genders in shoddy news coverage.

The hate that transgender people have to face must be unbearable.
Shame on NBC News for playing into the hatred
My deepest condolences to London Chanel's friends and family that cared about her. What a horrid death
