Texas Supreme Court Justice Debra Lehrmann, husband test positive for coronavirus

The former Tarrant County jurist calls her COVID-19 infection ‘very perplexing,’ coming as it did after two months of being ‘extremely careful.’ (hmmm..if you read the article, you see that she wasn't)

AUSTIN — Texas Supreme Court Justice Debra Lehrmann said Thursday she has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, becoming the first high-ranking state official with a known case of COVID-19.

Lehrmann and her husband, Greg, suffered fevers and body aches early last week before getting swabbed at an Austin drive-through testing center, she said.

Their Houston lawyer son, Jonathan, his wife Sarah and their six-month-old son Jack abruptly ended their visit at the elder Lehrmanns’ Austin residence. Though testing hasn’t confirmed it, the three Houston Lehrmanns also are believed to have been infected, Debra Lehrmann said.

“We have strictly adhered to the stay-at-home order since early March,” she said.

Six candidates, including some well-known Austin-area politicians, have filed to run for the July 14 special election to replace retired Democratic state Sen. Kirk Watson, according to the Texas secretary of state’s office.

Candidates had until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file to run for the seat.

State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, a longtime Austin Democrat, and former Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt are widely considered the two most prominent candidates for Texas Senate District 14, a historically Democratic seat that covers Bastrop County and parts of Travis County.

Rodriguez has served in the House since 2003 and has support from most of Travis County’s state House delegation. And Eckhardt, whose last day as county judge was Tuesday, has helped to oversee the community’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Two Republicans are also running for the Senate seat: Don Zimmerman, a former Austin City Council member, and Waller Thomas Burns II, who initially filed as an independent.

Texas Attorney General Asks Supreme Court to Weigh in on Voting by Mail

In a bit of judicial leapfrog, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is asking the Texas Supreme Court to weigh in on his interpretation of how voters can qualify for absentee ballots during the coronavirus pandemic.

Various lawsuits are pending over whether eligibility for mail-in ballots can be expanded to voters who risk contracting the virus by voting in person. Paxton believes it can’t, and Wednesday asked the state’s highest civil court to issue a relatively rare writ of mandamus preventing local election officials from doing so.

In a motion filed Wednesday, the Republican attorney general asked the Texas Supreme Court to order election officials in some of the biggest, largely Democratic counties in the state to follow his reading of existing eligibility requirements for absentee voting, arguing the court must step in quickly because those county officials intend to apply an “incorrect reading” of state law.

Federal and state courts are considering legal challenges to the state’s rules for voting by mail that seek to extend eligibility to voters who lack immunity to the new coronavirus. Primary runoff elections are set for July, and new ground rules could also come into play for the November general election.

I think Trump and Pence are getting antibody serum as a prevention

So, I think it's wishful thinking on our part that Trump gets Covid 19. Both Trump and Pence probably have an elite, expensive immunity.

Human's exposed to rabies receive rabies immunoglobulin. Hence antibody serums are a temporary form of immunization. Of course, the MAGATS and underlings don't have immunity.

I could be wrong, but his cavalier behavior indicates he is not worried about catching it.

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is a medication made up of antibodies against the rabies virus.[1] It is used to prevent rabies following exposure.[1] It is given after the wound is cleaned with soap and water or povidone-iodine and is followed by a course of rabies vaccine.[1] It is given by injection into the site of the wound and into a muscle.[1] It is not needed in people who have been previously vaccinated against rabies.[2]

Common side effects include pain at the site of injection, fever, and headache.[1] Severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis may rarely occur.[3] Use during pregnancy is not known to harm the baby.[1] It works by binding to the rabies virus before it can enter nerve tissue.[1] After the virus has entered the central nervous system, rabies immunoglobulin is no longer useful.[1]

The use of rabies immunoglobulin in the form of blood serum dates from 1891.[4] Use become common within medicine in the 1950s.[5] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system.[6] Rabies immunoglobulin is expensive and hard to come by in the developing world.[7] In the United States it is estimated to be more than 1,000.00 USD per dose.[8] It is made from the blood plasma of people or horses who have high levels of the antibody in their blood.[1][8] The horse version is less expensive but has a higher rate of side effects.[8][5]

The use of convalescent plasma collected from previously infected individuals to passively-transfer antibodies in order to protect or treat humans dates back almost 100 years, with some evidence for benefit against rabies, hepatitis B, polio, measles, influenza, Ebola and other pathogens1,2. Results from small case series during the prior MERS and SARS coronavirus outbreaks documented safety and faster viral clearance following convalescent plasma administration, particularly when given early in the disease course.
