Six N.J. newspapers call on Christie to resign

Corrections and clarifications: This post has been updated to correct the number of newspapers joining in the editorial.

Six New Jersey newspapers issued a joint editorial Tuesday calling on Gov. Chris Christie to resign in the wake of his failed presidential campaign and his subsequent endorsement of rival Donald Trump.

The six newspapers including the Asbury Park Press, the Cherry Hill Courier-Post and the Morristown Daily Record — all Gannett-owned papers that are part of the USA TODAY NETWORK — were apparently spurred to editorial outrage by a Monday press conference in which Christie refused to answer questions about anything other than his nomination of a state Supreme Court judge. Asked why, Christie replied, "Because I don't want to."

"We’re fed up with Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance," the papers wrote. "We’re fed up with his opportunism. We’re fed up with his hypocrisy."

The joint editorial notes that Christie spent part of 261 days out of state last year and traveled out of state to endorse Trump and campaign with him after he quit the race Feb. 10.

"For the good of the state, it’s time for Christie to do his long-neglected constituents a favor and resign as governor. If he refuses, citizens should initiate a recall effort," the editorial said.

St. Louis Student, 9, Can’t Attend School Because He’s Black

Nine-year-old Edmund Lee is a great student. He’s a third-grader at Gateway Science Academy, a charter school in south St. Louis. He’s been a student there since kindergarten, and he wants to stay there, but an archaic law on the city’s books won’t allow him to attend the school anymore because he’s black.

Everything was fine as long as Edmund and his family lived in the city of St. Louis. But their recent move to the suburbs means that Edmund can’t attend his old school. Because of the way that St. Louis’ laws are written, suburban kids cannot attend city schools if they are black.

“When I read the guidelines, I was in shock,” Edmund’s mother, La’Shieka White, told Fox 2 Now. “I was crying.”

The law was passed decades ago and was meant to address school segregation.

School officials told the news station that because it’s the law, their hands are tied, but they welcome revisiting the rules.

White has launched a petition, asking lawmakers to take notice of her situation, adding that this isn’t just about her son as she has heard from white students’ parents who were also unable to transfer to the school of their choice.

“I don’t want it to be just about an African-American boy,” White told the news station. “I want it to be about all children.”

Tiffany Luis, Edmund’s third-grade teacher, told Fox 2 that it would be sad not to see Edmund at the school next year.

“To not see his face in the halls next year would be extremely sad,” she said. “The family is saying they want to stay. I don’t understand why they can’t.”

Chris Christie just sold his soul to endorse Trump. But do you remember this?

Donald Trump: Chris Christie knew about Bridgegate

By Seth McLaughlin - The Washington Times - Monday, December 7, 2015
GOP presidential contender Donald J. Trump said Monday that Chris Christie had to know about plans to close the George Washington Bridge.

Mr. Trump has taken pride in his political counter punching on the campaign trail, and took aim at Mr. Christie at a rally in South Carolina after the tough-talking governor criticized Mr. Trump’s plan to put a moratorium on Muslims coming into the United States.

“Here is the story, the George Washington Bridge, he knew about it,” Mr. Trump said, drawing laughter from the crowd. “They were with him all the time, the people that did it. They never said, ‘Boss we are closing up the George Washington bridge tonight?’ No they never said that. They are talking about the weather.”

Mr. Christie has denied any knowledge of the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge and has not been charged with any wrongdoing — though a former ally pleaded guilty and a member of his inner circle has been indicted, along with a Christie appointee to the Port Authority on charges related to shutting down the lanes on the bridge in an act of political retribution against a mayor who refused to endorse Mr. Christie’s re-election campaign in 2013.

The Trump attack came hours after the real estate magnate released a plan that said the United States should stop allowing Muslims into the country until the nation has a better handle on international terrorism and stopping an attack against the U.S.

Mr. Christie, in a radio interview with Michael Medved that his campaign blasted out via email, suggested the plan underscored Mr. Trump lack of governing experience.

Mr. Trump also said that New Jersey has had nine credit downgrades during Mr. Christie’s time in office, and highlighted Mr. Christie’s embrace of President Obama in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
